Rick Santorum Tells Sick Kid Market Should Should Set Drug Prices

Good old Rick Santorum thinks it's best that we keep prices of meds high because it creates incentive for inovation.

Every day I'm amazed at how out of touch these politicians really are. Do they really have our best interests at heart or are they just out to help thier greedy corparate buddies? The medication mentioned in this story (abilify) is very similar to the one I take.

I have schizophrenia and because of the high cost of medication I can't work. I can't get a job with insurance and my meds cost $900 a month. I would rather work but it's more cost effective for me not to.

Republicans constently slam any entitlement programs and use to word socialism to scare people. The Canadians are doing just fine and pay less then half of what we do for healthcare.

America is great if your luckey enough to aford living here.

I'm 20 and would be screwed if I wasn't on my Moms insurance. What do all these kids/young adults do if they don't have parents that have insurance?

Well, they are basically F*****.

The entire Europe seems to do ok with free healthcare. Ok, not totally free, but free basic care, and for the totally full luxury deal it is about $400/year.

THIS GUY IS COMPLETELY SICK. he lives in sociopathic fantasy world. Seriously comparing drugs (that cost pennies) to buying an xbox (can't get cheaper entertainment)... This clown has to drop out, he's an insult to a majority of the people

I have alot of trouble comprehending the health system in the US, a few years ago when I heard you had to pay for even basic things I thought the person was lying.

In Oz its practically free and if it urgent they barely even take ur detail before treating you.

A few years ago I put my hand through a glass door and cut one of my knuckles down to the bone, within 20 min of arriving at hospital I was in surgery having my hand sown up.
All I had given them was my name address and date of birth, I got a letter 3 week later asking me to come back for a check up but never saw a bill and I didnt even have insurance.
Meds are sudsidised and are quite cheap from what I understand.

Isnt America meant to be the most prosperous nation on earth?
Hell even developing countries like Cuba have free healthcare.

You guy seriously need to ask your politicians where the money is going

The rest of the world is a little more civilized and a little more advanced that the US but we are working on it, if the Teapublicans weren't quite the millstone around our necks.

I just hope Pharma didn't hear him saying that, they could get quite upset about that proposition.
(Free market would mean no patents and customers being allowed to negotiate prices.... *gasp*!)

I know someone who is on a prescription medication that is highly advertised on TV , that if she didn't have insurance would cost her over $1000 a month.

Obviously, you can't alter the market price or you will create artificial shortages or surpluses. But the supply of drugs is grossly low already because of government-implemented cartels and because of the FDA's inane regulations which keep life-saving drugs from entering the market for many years.

So, in short, he's more wrong than right.

Due to galloping inflation, GREECE fixed drug prices recently.

As a result, there is no point in drug companies shipping drugs there at a loss, so the pharmacies are running out. In some place, kids have literally died as their parents can't obtain drugs at any cost, with thoudans turning to the black market and paying black market prices in an effort to keep their kids alive.

This is what happens when the Government, not the market, fix the prices of drugs.
