Sichuan province, China (CNN) -- It's after 10 p.m. when we see a light in the distance. We've traveled for more than three hours up a windy, icy road in western China.

Our hope is to get to the Tibetan autonomous zone, in the mountainous region of Sichuan province, an area reportedly locked in an ever-growing spiral of violence.

We're so close, only an hour or so away. And then the light.

Roadblocks like this are strewn across the back roads of this province. For weeks, ethnic Tibetans and Chinese security forces have been locked in conflict.

Buddhist nuns and monks have been carrying out ritual self-immolation. It is a gruesome protest against what they claim is the ongoing oppression by Chinese authorities.

Kind of impressed to get some new out of China and we get detained.

As our car turns back, our driver calls a Tibetan contact. Something serious is going down. The Tibetan says his village is crawling with police and the military. Later, local news reports tell of two Tibetans killed in protests.

But many of the villages that straddle the mountains are inhabited by Han Chinese, the dominant ethnic group in China. Inside the houses, lights are on, as people eat, watch TV and talk. We ask what they're hearing. They tell us they have little time for the Tibetans. They call them lazy and accuse them of living off government handouts.

One woman claims the Han Chinese are being targeted by violent Tibetan gangs. Local media reports say more than a dozen people have already been killed.

I AM FRUSTRATED with the fact that americans are about to judge china for this, WHEN we have just done something way worse... LOL we are forcing a foreign ideology on the people of Papua New Guinea, ownership and greed are foreign ideas and thoughts to them. To them those never existed before...

Well what I make of it, is I didn't even know some of this stuff was going on. Han Chinese being targets or Armed gangs in Tibet about the Buddhist Monks. I wasn't really too aware of what was actually going on there. So when I read this article I was kind of shocked (somewhat but nothing really shocks me, lack of a better word).

The thing is, in America, we don't get much of Chinese news. I wonder why lol? (sarcasm). So I really don't have much of a opinion because I really wasn't aware of the situation until after what I read. All in all just goes to show ya that every country has its problems.

Rubbish - both parties there are corrupt and in the pockets of Mobil-Exxon - and they don't care which is in power, plus this is OT!

I find it interesting that the Chinese always say they have no sympathy. Like how in the 'opinion piece' it says they are 'accused' of being lazy. I have seen/heard similar things said by Chinese university students that are in Australia. These are intelligent people not some weak minded morons. Are they really so brainwashed? Or could it be that a society that has a greater sense of community historically produces people with a different collective mentality?

And look at what America is trying to do to the net. Look how biased the media is. I know China has a 50 cent army but so does America. Its just more sophisticated.

CNN is a tool of the duopoly.

It comes down to keeping people, humans separated by any means. I find the self immolation atrocious an a real testament to the sacrifice and terror the Tibetan's are experiencing. From the article it reminds me of how people are so mind controlled that they hold little empathy for their brothers lest they too become the targets of the military terrorists.

This is the Tibetans cry for help, their voice in the dark hoping to spark humanity, the world, to show a point of truth about life, not for themselves but the suffering of the people.

This is a tipping point as it has been in past history, not always ending in death with certainty, unfortunately.

No they didn't. PNG is still as sovereign as it ever was but there is a split in the gov't, something we can all be sure that China would like to exploit. America doesn't need to do anything. PNG companies are largely uninterrupted.

Its no Surprise PRO FED,PRO Militarist News Network would be there in Tibet, Want to know something interesting? CNN came in Bosnia just a day before the actual war had even started.

They knew it was going to happen, they let it happen and knew which sides to pick and shoot for there cams.

Every country has a group of people it exploits for its own gain......

America has the illegal immigrants from all over the world......New Zealand has the Indonesians it gets to work its fishing boats for almost nothing....Australia as well......Russia has all those slavic women they brought in....


There all handed a few crumbs from the Governments. What's Tibet want? No more handouts from China?

They would be worse off if America helped Tibet be free....then their oil/gas resources get sucked away and they get nothing. Just some tv news saying they are "free"......few of the Tibetans live well for a few years until the oil/gas runs out and they're left starving to death/freezing to death.

Remember how Amerika went to "free the kurds" in Iraq.....then killed more Kurds than Saddam ever did....and gave Turkey the green light to annihilate alllllll the Kurds in Northern Iraq? Poor Iraqi Kurds were better off under Saddam.

Tibet is better off under China. They're alive.
