I was going through CNN video's today, and came across this.
Students launched a science project with an on-board camera into the Stratosphere.
You can clearly see an object on the horizon starting at the :49 second mark.
Shortly after the camera captures the object, the balloon...bursts?
Coincidence?

Opinions on what it could be?

The Moon? LOL. Kind of small to be the moon? Especially from that altitude.

The image shown at the end IS NOT the same image as the camera, look at the difference in the clarity, color & resolution.

It's the Moon, look at the relief and the valleys and you will see. I'm going to make my own experiment to see space through my own gadget. This was epic.

I must be blind, I didn't see anything at the 49 second mark, just the (probably moon) at the end.

I see something and its not the moon at 51-53 second mark. How ever it does show the moon at the 1:42 mark and the sun at the 49-50 mark.

Yeah it is........honest! Honest, it is the moon..............Meh!

Since when did the moon shrink to the size of a dot?

Hey wait a minute, that gives me an idea for a new thread:.......

"MOON SHRINKS OVERNIGHT, SHOCK, HORROR, PROBE!"

The Moon didn't shrink....it is the camera lens focal length.

A short focal length gives a wider "angle" of view to the image...which is what they wanted for this video. It makes objects in the distance )infinity in photography terms) smaller than "normal" when viewed with the naked eyes.

Oh yeah, I got ya now..........not.

The picture in the still above really takes in the whole picture....not, there is only a small part of the horizon showing? The moon would still be bigger than that surely?

It does not look like a wide angle lense. I would imagine it's a GOPRO type camera.

In fact it is a gopro camera 00:10 secs top of box

If you look at the beginning moments before the balloon is released you will see from the shot that this camera does not provide a wide angle shot. Not does it auto focus on anything, it merely shoots what it see's.

Not moon.

It is lens focal length, and this makes the Moon appear smaller. Doesn't anyone know anything about photography in this age of cell-phone cameras? Guess not....

Here, the GoPro website

The cameras have a wide-angle lens, clearly. The field of view varies from 127° to 170°, depending on the digital picture resolution you choose.

Here, this is an Amazon.com listing for replacement lenses:

Amazon GoPro

Kit comes with two replacements for the wide-angle glass lens covers which used on all wide-angle HERO and HD HERO housings.

Sorry, but understanding the optics in photograph can help understand what you see in videos, photos, in films and on TV.

I was reading this earlier on yahoo and watched the video a couple time and seen that dot, its not the moon #1 its too close to the camera. I too thought it was a UFO but without a clearer image it could just be the military
