The State of Israel has a population of approximately 7,798,600 inhabitants as of September 2011.[1] 75.3% of them are Jewish (about 5,865,300 individuals), 20.5% are Arabs (About 1,597,300 individuals), while the remaining 4.3% (about 318,200 individuals) are defined as "others"

...With the latest news, Israel may soon lose the need to create and seek out enemies; with a little help from the U.S. they did this to themselves.
The records of discussions that led up to the final text of the Balfour Declaration clarifies some details of its wording. The phrase "national home" was intentionally used instead of "state" because of opposition to the Zionist program within the British Cabinet. Both the Zionist Organization and the British government devoted efforts over the following decades, including Winston Churchill's 1922 White Paper, to denying that a state was the intention.[6] However, in private, many British officials agreed with the interpretation of the Zionists that a state would be established when a Jewish majority was achieved.[7]
The initial draft of the declaration, contained in a letter sent by Rothschild to Balfour, referred to the principle "that Palestine should be reconstituted as the National Home of the Jewish people."[8] In the final text, the word that was replaced with in to avoid committing the entirety of Palestine to this purpose. Similarly, an early draft did not include the commitment that nothing should be done which might prejudice the rights of the non-Jewish communities. These changes came about partly as the result of the urgings of Edwin Samuel Montagu, an influential anti-Zionist Jew and secretary of state for India, who was concerned that the declaration without those changes could result in increased anti-Semitic persecution. The draft was circulated and during October the government received replies from various representatives of the Jewish community. Lord Rothschild took exception to the new proviso on the basis that it presupposed the possibility of a danger to non-Zionists, which he denied.[9]

Jews are considered the "chosen" people for two reasons.
One, God "chose" a rather small group of people in a small land in order to send his son, Jesus, to walk the earth and teach them about God. They were "chosen" to spread God's word. I'm guessing the smaller the group, the easier it was to spread the message at that time and the less it would be corrupted and misinterpreted.
Second, God "chose" them to make an example out of them.
I think he's doing a pretty good job, don't you? What other group of people do you hear so much about? What other group has become so prosperous for being so small? What other group is totally surrounded and threatened on a daily basis by it's enemies, yet manages to survive throughout the ages, despite it's size?
This is why God "chose" them. To set an example. No matter how small you may be, God has the power to sustain you and protect you from anything you face, and he will prove it.
Here's a look at the past fulfilled prophecies about Israel in the Bible, as well as the ones yet to come. There's a "part 1" and "part 2" on Israel.

Edit Add: As being the ones for God to "make an example", remember he's allowed them to be persecuted, separated, etc. too, yet the people as a whole continue to survive. Let's face it, he hasn't always shown them favor in order to make an example out of them.edit on 27-1-2012 by Deetermined because: (no reason given)

Do You think the Jews also wrote about the persecution of themselves in the end times, for their own benefit. this post is hogwash. The Bible is the inspired word of God.
Rev 3:9
Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee.

It's the same thing with the catholic church thinking it is the only valid faith and means of salvation. Really it's not their fault.
