I can't really label my self as a Christian because i do not go to church... but even i have brains to actually study astronomy and scientific claims...etc.

I am talking about those "worship jesus or you burn" kind of people..i actually encountered few today, oh yeah they were waving their magical book of ABSOLUTE truth..nothing in their bible is wrong it is 1000% correct... and when i asked them very important question like "do you believe in life else where in the universe?" i got a response like this
"young kid, there is no evidence in the bible that god created life anywhere else but on earth..accept Jesus into your heart". My friend is an atheist and when i told him what i encountered he really laughed..

I also bet they (crazy religious people) don't know about their own history and even whats on most of their bible.

I am well acquainted with science and mathematics. I just no longer subscribe to naturalism or materialism because I had a spiritual experience.

When you have not experienced the reality of God it is easy to side with human knowledge. But when you experience God you start to understand the man's wisdom is foolishness to God. If all these smart scientists have no idea that the crucifixion and resurrection were real, it is very possible that they are mistaken about less important things.

That is 2000% of the recommended daily allowance. Maybe those people are 1000% of the amount of crazy you want to encounter in one day but they can't be 1000% crazy.

I try not to talk to the religious freaks, i have no problems with anyone's beliefs, believe what you want to believe. But don't be trying to convert me because its not going to happen ever, sorry, i just can't do it. My mind cannot make logical sense of most religious,
Therefore, why would i bother doing something i am going to dislike?
I was baptised catholic
I went to sunday school
My parents tried to get us going to church when i was 10 or 11, i hated it, they knew that. My mother didn't like it either, she's a pagan now. (sharp as a tack too, she knows -a lot-).

When they approach me, (you can see them a mile away), i just respectfully tell them that i am not interested, thank them for their time and move on. IF they press the issue then i start getting peeved, then i just start laying down some facts as to -why- im not interested. Usually they shut up after that point.

Vitamin companies are not selling snake oil. If you need 250mg of Vitamin C and you take a 1000mg vitamin C you have taken 400% of your daily requirement. This is why it labeled as such.

On topic: The extremes come in every facet of life. The extreme religious just take what they believe and shut all other thought out because they are so far in one direction they cannot see far enough the other way.

Think of the halfway point on a large lake. Once you go so far to the other side the one you came from disappears on the horizon. Without reference points you are lost. They are lost and grasp what they can see.

I've never heard a Christian claim the Earth is 5 years old. And OP, the more I learned about math and science the EASIER Genesis began to read to me. Especially learning about the cutting edge of Physics

To tell you the truth, I don't really know why they are so one dimensionsal. "Pray or your soul will burn in a lake of fire for eternity". That's rubbish for sure. But I don't think it's just one reason. For some it might be more of a psychological issue. People who couldn't find direction in their lives and found solice in the bible and fell in with the wrong crowed. Those who are like minded tend to join together. So, if you're in need of some religious connection and the first church you go to is West Borrow Baptist Church....you're screwed. There are those who "feel" the holy spirit inside them and belive with all their heart that there was a resurection and all the words spewd out by the bible. Then I guess you'll spread the word because that's what the biblle says. So instead of thinking for themselves they let the bible dictate their lives. And there are those who I believe don't give a crap and all they whanna do is get on peoples nerves. I'm sure you know of someone that just tiks everybody off. Imagine if he was religious.

I think you meant "crowd," not "crowed." That being said, I have to agree, I think it is Fear myself, that drives the herds to Christianity.
After all, they always attempt to scare us, am I wrong here? "Come to Christ or Burn in Hell." Saw that on a bumper sticker a few days ago. Who do these people think they are to judge us?

Ozvaldo, I understood what you meant with your comment. You said 5 years old, that simply shows the utter stupidity of believing the world is only a few thousand years old, when in truth Earth is a few billion years old.

Like I said, I believe fear to be the common denominator here, you can smell the fear in some of the religious posts here.

They are known by different names. Some are "evangelical Christians", some are Baptists, but what they all have in common is the fundamentalist / extremist attitude. Fundamentalism / extremism is dangerous irregardless of which religion the extremist subscribes to - WBC picketing dead soldiers funerals, Islamic extremists supporting 'jihad' - to me, these "extreme religious folk", are a cancer to the Human race, and gives me sympathy for atheists who truly believe religion is the root of all evil.

I do not believe Religion is evil, and I am a practicing Catholic (although an open minded one, as I also regularly attend Baptist and Pentecostal services as well). There are evil people and extremist coming from all walks of life and worldviews.

Don't let this stop you in your spiritual journey, and I pray that you will discover what Jesus Christ truly wants (for you to believe in Him, and to love, and to forgive, and to treat others as you would like to be treated, and to try and adhere to the 10 commandments as much as possible). Amen & God bless you

I worked in the industry. If you are taking vitamin tablets I strongly advise to find out where the raw materials for these products are sourced. Not where the product is made. Where the raw materials are impoted from. You will not be told this by a sales rep. You need to contact the company manufacturing it. When you find out where it is coming from I will leave it up to you to decide if its snake oil or not. lol.

Best of luck.

Not every Christian is a Young Earth Creationist. I believe the Earth is approximately 4.54 billion years old and mankind was brought about through Darwinian evolution. I also believe the book of Genesis, though I do not believe in a literal man named Adam and woman named Eve, I believe (based upon study of the hebrew terms) Adam & Eve simply refer to the first group of men and women of the human race. Nor do I believe in a massive worldwide deluge, though I do believe in a localized flood that happened in Noahs time. I could go on, but I feel no need to go in depth at the moment. Well thank you.
I do consider myself as someone who is about his wits :p It's easy to think all Christians are a buncha whackjobs though thanks to nuts like Hovind. And of course, this being ATS, there is a large percentage of people who believe in strange, non-mainstream beliefs (bizarre conspiracy theories, YEC, etc etc). The truth shall set us free :p

Oh! Sorry I made a typo.
But I think you right about the fear. There are so many aspects to religious fanaticism. Like fear, acceptance, redemption....etc. That's why religion is not one of a favorite human inventions. Like I always said. Be spiritual all you want but leave religion out of it.
