In a provocative column published Friday, Slate Magazine's Will Oremus compares Canada to Saudi Arabia and Venezuela and asks the question: "Is our neighbor to the north becoming a jingoistic petrol state?"

"[Canada's] regime, in thrall to big oil interests, has grown increasingly bellicose, labeling environmental activists "radicals" and "terrorists" and is considering a crackdown on nonprofits that oppose its policies," writes Oremus.

ca.news.yahoo.com...

"Regime" lol..

I think this article is a jab at Canadian having large Joint Venture stakes with Chinese CNOOC.

Appears there are LOTS of Americans who are very anti-american, mostly due to their govt's choice of war, but I don't think I know ANY anti-Canadians here. Zero.

Just when I thought I had seen it all...this article had to come out

Next in the war on terror...the invasion of Canada!

The sad thing is I could see it happening.

I hear they have a clandestine nuclear program, from Israeli intelligence of course

Starred and Flagged. In fact, my personal belief is that Canada is one of the few countries that has sane policies, unlike the United States. Furthermore, I have found the Canadian people to be very friendly, reasonable, and rational. It is a shame that Obama decided to shaft Canada, after the US committed to building the Keystone Pipeline. I don't blame Canada one bit for selling oil to China either. We have a government that is out of control, or as I like to say :"This is an insane asylum and the inmates are in control."

I dunno my views on Canada are pretty simply, it has all the shiny things Americans have, without the Americans. Its great, I think I will move there to work one day.

We're not jingoists, but our policies are far from sane. In fact, our new laws that are being implemented are just as if not more draconian than our American neighbors. The only difference is that we are good at portraying the illusion of how "great" our country is...I have the same distaste against the Canadian government as I do for the American government.

I have been called an American hater numerous times, so does this make me a Canadian hater too?

Our government is just as screwed as yours is, its just taking ours longer to screw us as bad.
Our government is pretty much like the united states government, corrupt.
We kowtow to the oil industry, as well as the banking cartel.

We Canadians are way too passive, know what kind of gun laws we have up here? Nothing like americas.

And with the new omnibus crime bill, it will be time to fill harpers new super prisons.

We have problems here too, its just the US has more and bigger influence than we do. So no one really pays attention to really what is happening at home. I noticed it. We are on the same path. We are not immune to collapse. We are not immune to having our rights taken away. And we are not immune to being spied on by the people meant to protect.

Just my thoughts, anyways.

I see Canada as the country the US aspires to be.

we're talking Anti-Americanism/Canadianism in the sense that the governments/corporations are rogue right?

If they are talking about the general populations, they need to reassess their priorities.

most of us, besides the sociopathic "elite"/common criminals want a good life for us and our neighbours.
the divide creates itself through disparities among certain targeted populations.

As far as your heading goes Canada is in North America. Not trying to throw your thread off balance. Just saying they do go hand in hand IMO.

Try to give us more of your own text next time my friend. Don't be so shy. It makes the difference between a good thread and an excellent thread. Again IMO.

Obama didn't shaft Canada. Our resources will still get sold.

He just shafted the EU. That's where that oil was going to end up.

Maybe they'd like to get in on a refinery here and a pipeline to the east coast instead to ship to them.

We know. I laughed hard the first time I heard about border town bars announcing when the Canadian women were coming in on the bus. Apparently, this elicts cheers. The explanation I got about why probably doesn't fit within the TOS.

But yes, there is anti-Canadian sentiment. I've run into on occassion. We are arrogant and reserved. Most Canadians don't realize that they are so very reserved. It has to do with the cross-section of Victorian reserved, Chinese reserved, and Natives are very much so too. Even the most outrageous Canadians - some Quebequois and East Coasters - are still pretty politely standoffish by many cultures standards. The extreme personal space issues probably add to this perception.

America wouldn't ever dare invade Canada. Australia, UK, and New Zealand are all allies of America but in the end, America is not in the commonwealth, so they will have to defend from all sides.

Haha! I bet more than half of the people who did this survey have no idea what that means.

I honestly wouldnt put much stock into this. Might just be a good old fashioned case of oilsand envy.

I live on the east coast. And well.. I agree with you.
A lot of people are very reserved, no one seems really 'outgoing' so to speak? I can go all day without opening my mouth, and i live in a major city (halifax). Lol,
I try to say please and thankyou, and it doesn't get you much. Haha.

Quebec = Crazy drivers (no seriously, unless your a nascar driver, dont do it)

Oh, and as far as self-hating Canadians, we might not be there yet, but i think we might be getting there.

After participating in a post titled something like "Harper legislates lies to allow Fox News North", i think there might be a few of those types there. Funny thing was, the whole post was a hoax. It was not Fox news at all, Harper never tried to legislate "legal lies" and the whole thread degenerated into one big "bash our government even though this thread is lies". If it wasnt so sad i would have laughed my ass off at the rediculousness of it all.

The anti-Canadian sentiments the article refers to are mainly environmental concerns. It's not so much anti-Canadian as it is anti-Harper or anti-Big Oil.

It's hard to imagine why anyone would be anti-Canadian. We open our arms to immigrants, we only go to war to help our allies or protect innocent lives, we don't bully other nations or dictate their policies.

The only hate we seem to get is from hardcore conservatives who despise our evil socialist healthcare, pot smoking hippies and homosexuals living happily together. What a horrid den of corruption we live in.

I'm from Metro Halifax and I can't disagree more. You know what you're going to get from a Scotian. S/he tells you. We are extremely open. Best people in the country. That said much of NS is populated by Newfies. Excellent people as well. No BS.

As to driving in Quebec? *shivers* That's insane.

This is just a case of bad timing. 10-1 that this pipeline will be built..... after the next US election.
