I don't have anything to add to this forum, everyone else will gleefully jump on it for internet points, let them.

Then why do you go onto forums like this? I'm curious.

For me I have always been into reading and research with some writing. I like that there is a site where I can do this and share with others who have similar theories or ideas. I don't find any kind of new knowledge worthless. There is so much online that you can learn, for free and I enjoy it. If there wasn't the internet or places like ATS I wouldn't know about many things, probably most of the things I have learned about the world around me I learned via the internet. How is that worthless?

Eh points...I don't care about points. I never have. I just have so many because I have no life and Im always on here lol
recently unemployed so Im really on here a lot now......

I enjoy places like ATS or even blog sites where I can blog my own thoughts on a topic. I guess you would have to have a sort of passion for this stuff to feel it's worth it.

I can honestly say the search function sux, or did when I used it before. I think they changed something though because lately, it seems to work just fine for me.

Although I agree that there are a lot of duplicate threads, there are several angles that any one story can come from, so a thread on a subject that is already covered, is just as important as the first thread if it is different. No one holds the right to a thread. That is something I have seen on ATS, someone starts a thread, and then if other people start a thread that is along the same lines, the poster gets all offended even though the other thread might contain a totally different aspect, because of PRIDE in what one posted, they think they own that subject on ATS, and that just is not so.

Im not talking topics that are of the same but similar like say a thread on the Pyramids, there are tons with varying theories. I am talking about something like a thread that is on one topic like Aurora Borealis pictures. Do we really need 5 of them? This was just used as an example. That is the duplicate craziness Im talking about.

Some just want to be the first to post it and it shows and I have seen many second or even third threads get closed because there was someone who posted it already yet their thread lacks any real information but the two that were closed had all the information. That is what i mean when putting pride in what you post vs just trying to be everyone to the post......hope that made sense

The mods seem to do a very good job of redirecting when it needs to happen, so ask yourself, who hurt your pride enough to post this thread, and then ask yourself why you feel the need to control..
edit on 25-1-2012 by Darkblade71 because: speaking serious typonese

I alert many duplicate threads lol I have even had members u2u me saying I target their threads when that just isn't true. I'm on here a lot so I tend to see duplicates more. I feel like a pain sometimes alerting but I do see mods take care of it and that is what it's there for. They can't see everything all the time.

Nah nobody hurt my pride. I am not like that, doesn't really bother me all that much. I just miss when someone's response contributed and didn't insult the other. If they stated something was a certain way they backed it up, now it's just "because I said so" mentality.

I posted this because of various threads on here lately and how people are posting to one another. It's just not very friendly. I know I've gotten a little annoyed and have had to step back and take back what I have said but some on here seem to push buttons on purpose with others and when you watch something long enough you see patterns in people, even online.

I made a thread a week or so ago on something, looked on the main boards, forum and everything but turns out there was one already from a couple hours before. They titled it differently and used a different forum. It happens and I told mods to close it and I just added what I had to say to that thread. So it can happen but just from watching this site all the time I see so many who do it all the time so their excuse "search sucks" is just not valid to me lol. Search isn't that great yes but there are other ways to check the boards to see if there is another thread started on a topic, story or find.

What we see on ATS is a perfect example of how the public, mostly American and English young people have been dumbed down. I was thinking earlier of writing as much in a rant of my own, but this one more or less tells it better without making that final, quite true statement: (I'll repeat for clarity) DUMBED DOWN!

It is not just spelling of headlines minor, minor research, but those areas frequently provide a perfect example of what you may find in the content.

Certainly, there are old regulars here with an ungodly amount of patience with the ignorant, foolish and illerate. I have been given cause to ponder many times if the word "stupid" is always just a unkind word or frequently justified and true for some that come to post these threads. Could it be something worse that being dumbed down by society? Could there be a drastic lowering of intelligence in the Western world or is it simply a matter of personal behavior and an inclination to not behave decently in public if you can get away with it?

We are surrounded by all of this technology created by very smart and capable people and yet vast numbers of young people can't be bothered to do research or use a spell check. I'm continually reminded of the words of an old Pink Floyd song "Another Brick in the Wall," "We don't need no education...."

Unfortunately ATS has become a victim of its own success, all the good subjects have been done to death and no new members search for anything. Maybe having a page with a list of the top 100 threads of the last few years would help. I have posted similar to this before it's a mix of forum fatigue and dilution of quality members. A solution could be a premium version of ATS with a small subscription, that would in hindsight separate the wheat from the chaff

If there wasn't the internet or places like ATS I wouldn't know about many things, probably most of the things I have learned about the world around me I learned via the internet. I come on here because I can, that is all. I am exercising my free will to come on the internet and communicate with others, be it ranting and complaining or learning new things. You are right, I have learned a bunch of things from the internet, but at the end of the day it amounts to nothing because any joe shmoe can do the same thing. More people on here would rather worry about their stars and flags than anything of any value, this particular website is rampant in it. You can thank ATS for entertaining these ideas, unless they are complete morons then they should have already known it would do nothing for productive discussion of any kind.

The way I see it, they appear to actually be against discussion and raw information, why should I spend my time trying to provide information so some other guy can sit on his pedestal on top of ATS with a website full of trolls and idiots? Only to be censored at the end of the day because they don't agree with me while this person claims ownership of everything everyone produces on ATS, what a scam.

I guess they don't understand that the environment they are nurturing is becoming garbage because of the very rules they impose on it. You can't claim something and do the opposite, that is exactly why this forum has been going downhill for years. I am here because I choose to be, if no one listens to me so be it. This forum speaks for itself, all you have to do is look at any given topic and you can see evidence of what I am talking about.

The internet is a beautiful thing, but in the real world it is shunned. The knowledge within the internet is great on a very large scale, but to an individual it rarely means anything. You can't walk up to a college professor and debate with him about things you've learned on the internet, because he will think you are a joke no matter if you are even right. This goes for almost anything similar, not many people are going to take a person quoting something from the internet seriously, no matter how right they might be.

The internet is worthless because people buy into it, at the end of the day no matter what you have learned means nothing in the real world, unless it is some specific circumstance related to higher education or something. Even that is a joke, if you go to school your professor will more than likely try to do nothing other than fill you full of his opinion on the world, not always true, but it shouldn't exist nonetheless. Welcome to the decline of individualism.

No matter what you do here, it will mean nothing to anyone other than you. It really feels like the internet should be a lot more than what it really is, even though it is already one of the greatest achievements of mankind. Maybe culture just hasn't caught up with our progression in communication tech, and we are really too stupid to be using the internet. Maybe I'm too stupid to be on here too.

All the knowledge you gain from this is still there for everyone to see, everyone has this knowledge at their fingertips, not just you. It will only matter if someday the net disappears, until then any knowledge gained from the internet is not "special" in any way, it is public domain and honestly that's a good thing.

I resent that, I have been on the net since the beginning. Perhaps I just see it for what it really is instead of glorifying it unnecessarily. Don't mind me though, I'm just another disgruntled fool on the net.

It seems like on the few posts that I have done, not many in fact, the ones I spent the most time and energy on, got almost no responce. So I'm considering not posting at all again. Meanwhile, I too have been frustrated at how some posts that are blatent attempts at getting attention, actually do get attention, to much in fact.

Hey, I feel your pain. Just try to realize that there are some really smart, knowledgeable people on here.....who don't just bait and troll and rave....

They are, as in the general public, not the majority, but they are here.
I'm a relative 'newbie', but I still have found some very worthwhile people here, and am honored to call them 'ATS friends.'
FWIW,

Well you certainly have a point. I find that I can go through the new threads in a few minutes Because the majority of the threads aren't worth my time. it almost seems that there are a bunch of children posting these days. I noticed that some of this started when GLP started charging for their site. I don't think that they do anymore, but the damage is done.

One of my pet peeves is Utube videos. When did Utube become a reliable source for information? Sure there is some usable things there but most of it is crap. I don't want to spend my time watching a 15 minute video that could be summed up in three sentences. Sometimes I wonder if they even watch the videos that they post.

Any way Mblah I really enjoy your cooking threads, So does MyMindIsMyOwn. Funny that you should post this rant as we were just discussing this topic the other day.

As an example of what you are ranting about, I noticed that a poster just before me thinks that Gandi was't dead before the internet existed.S&F for speaking truth

Guilty < raises hand > I have been a bit lazy on some of my posts recently and all I can say is, I was lazy. Sometimes with bringing something onboard and not saying a lot about it(still a few sentences at least), my thought process is that I feel many here will dig the vid or article, and getting it here for others to see is as important as saying a lot about it. I believe you are right about some wanting S&F's as a primary drive, but for me it is laziness and I am admitting it cuz I've been feeling guilty and so I am taking this thread rant opportunity to do better, so thanks

Peace,

Thank you for pointing out in such a short sentence what Mblah was talking about in the section of her OP about being a little more civil towards one another. It's OK to disagree, in fact some of the best threads I've participated in are those where people of opposing ideas had the common courtesy to debate a topic without having to resort to such childish means of trying to degrade and tear down each other. Might try that sometime, it's really rather...liberating.

"we must be the change we want to see in the world"
thats what Gandhi said about the internet.

I'm sorry, but I have 2 things to say about this....
1. Obviously you think that insulting folks (i.e. see your opening statement about cheese and whine) is the change you wish to see in the world, otherwise I dare say your opening statement would have been a little nicer
2. If Ghandi said that about the internet, is there a Tweet or something to back that up with??

Precisely the point I belive Mblah was going on about. ATS is a site who's content is made by it's users. I don't think she's too far off the mark in asking that threads and posts be of a higher quality. If you've ever read any of her threads on space, aliens or anything else you would see that her content is as high quality as she is herself and is asking, as part of this community, for others to care enough about it to keep it to a higher standard.

MBLAH!! Sorry for the partial rant.........

Great rant Mblah, I totally agree with you here.

Me personally, I used to work on threads a lot, and I would derive great pleasure from putting my thoughts together. I have been working on a few threads recently, but every time I sit down to put my research together I just can't. I can't subject my deepest thoughts and research to the kind of ignorance that seems to prevail on here lately it's a real shame, but it's just how I feel about it.
