Like you, I was raised on Robert Anton Wilson, Phil K. Dick, and so forth. I also listened to a lot of Iggy and The Stooges, which unnerved my poor mother to no end. I think she is still looking for someone to sue. I was an honest to dog Pope by age 10, but I had to give it up when I discovered I no longer believed in myself. Life seemed meaningless without silly rituals, so I started my own religion. We made a couple of records and then broke up because of a goddess. I'm sure you've been there.

As to the PKD quote re: "the empire" / "black iron prison" I am suspicious that what Dick is referring to here is a biological entity that manifests itself through our DNA/RNA, and which guides our evolution -- both biological, as well as social -- even now. Apparently Dick was hip to a new method of direct communication with the Empire, which involved the heroic consumption of black beauties and the manipulation of hot pink lasers.

Personally, I blame the lunatics.

In all seriousness, I am suspicious of the same, with possibly slight variations. I once believed that we were only prisoners of this thing (PDK/ZEBRA). But now I believe that we are also the Warden; and on another level the two, Mankind and its Warden and Torturer, are Lovers.

I read a really good book on it.
