I also wanted to add that '___', (Dimenthyltryptamine) is created within your pineal gland,
which secretes a while after you fall asleep, and that is how dreaming occurs.
It also is secreted during a time of high amount of physical stress and harm..
Oh and can't forget it also is released in high amounts in NDE's (near death experiences).

If science ever try's to find the soul, the pineal gland is the first place they should look.

Also, the pineal gland is known in some cultures as the "third eye" and the gate of the soul, or
seat of the soul..

Do the pinal gland that make Dimenthyltryptamine make the tingeling of the top of your head (crown chakra) or do it make the tingeling on the forehead where they say the third eye chakra is when a person wake up and pushes chi? Do people always get the tingeling on the top of the head before the third eye tingeling? From my point of view soul/devine push chi to top of head (crown chakra) changes pinal gland so that chi is pushed to forehead(third eye) that makes people continue to follow the path that is needed to open the rest of the chakras.

Not sure this was the place or if above makes sense. I would say the gate is opened before and then crown chakra and then third eye is activated. But it can be that something goes the other way from third eye to crown to devine. Is the soul with the devine outside or is it in the third eye?

Someday somebody will have to figure these things out so we can get scientific research on how this works and maybe it wil be easier to help those who awake

No it isn't. This is all myth and not backed by ANY science.

There is no evidence that '___' is produced in the pineal gland, released while dreaming or NDE's. It just has been repeated so many times people think it is actually true.

"We don't know whether '___' is made in the pineal. I muster a lot of circumstantial evidence supporting a reason to look long and hard at the pineal, but we do not yet know. There are data suggesting urinary '___' rises in psychotic patients when their psychosis is worse. However, we don't know whether '___' rises during dreams, meditation, near-death, death, birth or any other endogenous altered state. To the extent those states resemble those brought on by giving '___', it certainly makes one wonder if endogenous '___' might be involved, and if it were, it would explain a lot. But we don't know yet. Even if the pineal weren't involved, that would have little overall effect on my theories regarding a role for '___' in endogenous altered states, because we do know that the gene involved in '___' synthesis is present in many organs, particularly lung. If the pineal made '___', it would tie up a lot of loose ends regarding this enigmatic little organ. But people seem to live pretty normals lives without a pineal gland; for example, when it has had to be removed because of a tumor.

Addendum by Rick Strassman

"I did my best in the '___' book to differentiate between what is known, and what I was conjecturing about (based upon what is known), regarding certain aspects of '___' dynamics. However, it's amazing how ineffective my efforts seem to have been. So many people write me, or write elsewhere, about '___', and the pineal, assuming that the things I conjecture about are true. When I was writing the book, I thought I was clear enough, and repeating myself would have gotten tedious.

Rogan does an excellent job of expressing a number of bullet points from Strassman's book in a humorous manner. But the problem is that none of these points are known to be true. And although Strassman clearly states that his ideas about '___' and the pineal gland "are not proven"2, many people have accepted them as fact. As of June 2010, there is currently no scientific evidence that the pineal gland produces '___', much less any evidence for the more far-out speculations that Strassman makes about '___' being a chemical modulator of the human soul. When Strassman examined the pineal glands from "about ten" human corpse brains, there was nary a trace of '___' to be found in them. This doesn't invalidate his theory, since '___' is metabolized quickly, and none of the corpse brains were fresh-frozen. Further tests on fresh-frozen brains could be done. Someday there may be evidence that '___' is produced in the pineal gland, but that day has not yet arrived.

'___'? I don't even know what all that # is. In all honesty - it's a metaphor, not a cell to chart. I think you guys are completely missing the point.

I thought this was interesting considering the quote from Genesis at the end of your OP.
The painting is a Louis Leloir depicting Jacob's struggle with the angel Peniel.

seems imho to close to be chance

Being in medical school, you are correct my friend, the pineal gland is a tricky little gland that's also responsible for the secretion of melatonin, which induces a sleep like state. The near death experience, as the current theory prevails, is a paradox. Right when we are about to die, our brains scan our entire memory databank which is located in a region known as the hippocampus. Memories are encoded as electrical energy between synapses, for which we yet do not know the mechanism for. However, dimethyltryptamine ('___') is released in huge amounts during near death experiences. Now, the main question arises if there is a soul? The brain and mind is one of the most mysterious aspects of ourselves, and the complex organization of the brain is sufficient for us to have any conscious precept. It has been shown that someone who is in a coma-like state still has sensory information coming into the central nervous system but no information going out, which is why some people have the ability to come out of a coma. If there is a soul, it would have to be equated with the mind, or "self." That is what differentiates us humans from other animals, our ability to reason, rationalize, and come to conclusions. But in the end, we are just higher order evolved animals that nature has selected us for reproductive success.

I hope all is well.

'___' is a naturally occurring substance that is produced by the pineal gland in small amounts and also in plants, especially by little enzymes known as methyltransferases that reside in pinealocytes, the main type of cell that comprises the pineal gland. It is derived from tryptophan, an important amino acid that is required for serotonin (5-HT) development, which stands for 5-hydroxytryptamine and melatonin development. Most of the tryptamines are derived from tryptophan, and are important neurotransmitters in the central nervous system. Serotonin is released from from a nucleus in the brainstem called the raphe nucleus, which interacts with many parts of the brain.

I already know what '___' is. There is NO science behind '___' being produced in the pineal gland, NDEs, or dreaming. I provided sources. If you are a medical student you should know this.

Several speculative and yet untested hypotheses suggest that endogenous '___' is produced in the human brain and is involved in certain psychological and neurological states. '___' is naturally occurring in small amounts in rat brain, human cerebrospinal fluid, and other tissues of humans and other mammals.

All the mystical properties behind '___' are mere SPECULATION with NO factual backing.

sigh... you are misinformed. I know its tempting to use google and wikipedia for everything, but books are invaluable.
www.rickstrassman.com...

"Rick Strassman MD performed the first new human studies with psychedelic drugs in the US in over 20 years. His research involved the powerful naturally-occurring compound, '___' – N,N-dimethyltryptamine. Led to this substance through his earlier study of the pineal gland as a potential biological locus for spiritual experiences, he administered several hundred doses of '___' to approximately 60 volunteers between 1990 and 1995. He wrote about this research in the popular book, '___': The Spirit Molecule, now in its 15th printing. With three distinguished collaborators, he co-authored Inner Paths to Outer Space, which looks more carefully at the common "other worlds" experience that volunteers frequently reported during his research.

Since 1996, Dr. Strassman has been exploring models for the '___' effect focusing primarily on the Old Testament concept of prophecy. Prophecy is a spiritual experience which takes into account the apparently external, free-standing nature of the '___' "worlds," in which one's sense of self is highly preserved and interactive. The Old Testament concept of prophecy provides an alternative to other models that borrow more heavily from Eastern religious systems, and those of Latin American shamanism. The notion of prophecy also deals directly with ethical and moral concerns, adding a crucial element to our ability to understand and integrate the content of the psychedelic experience. He is developing these ideas in his next book, The Soul of Prophecy, due to appear in 2011."

I had a really great thread on here from 2004 called Tryptamines and God, don't bother searching for it though, it was moved, deleted, brought back, deleted, brought back, moved, then finally ATS decided we weren't allowed to talk about it anymore. I've scaled back my contributions to this site as a result of that and a few other closed, unsearchable, or completely missing threads. Maybe there's a copy of it floating around somewhere on the wayback machine, it's a damned shame really as I would like to have had a copy of it for my records at least considering the work myself and others put into it. Apprently the information is unfit for the profane masses.

Relying on pure science is a mistake
Relying on pure word of mouth is a mistake

Saying something is scientifically proven or unproven doesn't make any sense, based on what knowledge? Sure, trying to turn lead into gold is very expensive, and not really worth the effort.

Perhaps there is more to what history has to offer than just scientifically provable information,
'Scientific proof' really is an oxymoron, because science can never definitely say "This is what is is, this is what it is not",

Science says faster than light is impossible,
Yet here we are with particles that are doing that exact thing.

Perhaps alchemy is a gift to mankind, perhaps it is an encoded message to the people of the future. To turn lead into gold.

To take our unpure souls and turn them pure, into gold.
Science doesn't have all the answers,
Neither does religion or philosophy.

You have to mix them together to find the truth.

Wikipedia is edited by many people, here a source from a medical journal regarding '___'. '___' was found to be elevated in the urine of schizophrenics, hence, it is possible that it is the reason why schizophrenic patients experience abnormal sensory experiences and emotional pathologies.

www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov...

It is synthesized in man in very minute amounts, it has been proven, the enzyme that converts the reaction is amine N-methyltransferase, and is present throughout the entire body.

Yea, that series also crossed my mind when I read "philosopher's stone".
There are many metaphors in music movies and shows regarding alchemy.
Without alchemy we'd probably still be in grass and stick huts huddling around a bonfire.
Although we'd probably be more spiritually aware creatures as a whole without such distractions... maybe.

Anyway, take a lesser material and turn it into something useful.
Kind of like taking (what we perceive as) negative experiences, or feelings, and using them as a tool to learn from mistakes.

Lead into gold...
Negativity overwhelms and absence of love weighs us down and makes life hardly worth living.
But experiencing the negative makes us appreciate the light and positivity that much more, which is perhaps why we're on this planet in the first place.
There's order to this chaos, but being square-dab in the middle of it gives us a skewed perspective...

Fun topic, thanks DresdenCodex and other contributors

I have been doing 29 years of research into the nature of the supernatural. from personal experience the allegory of lead into gold goes as this "turn the lead into gold". The lead represents the crude matter of our unenlightened base, or we in a material world. it is people, this lead, only driven by our to quote Fruedian "ID" our base desires that a biological entity would want. see the bottom part of Maslows heirarchy of needs as well.

Now the gold is the pursuit, of purifying the self away from only using our intellect to accumulate things a biological entity would want. "food, sex, shelter, power/dominance, euphoria" When you are pursuing gold, these things become trivial to you, one begins to recognize we are spiritual beings capable of interacting with the wild unseen forces of the universe. this will take a lot of fasting, isolation, a reflection library "enlightening subject matter to read" mind you dont starve yourself fasting eat simple things and water just about a small snack size many hours after rising.

now the isolation to acheive this will take weeks or maybe months if you have already been seeking gold. I warn you on this journey have a firm sense of how to be in the outside world, because when one acheives gold/enlightenment you may find you are less interested in people and how important they think they are in our material world. "the lead."

One cannot simply undo a gold transformation either. if you try to acheive in the lead world after this resistance is going to come your way, "trust me" once you taste the spiritual gold, the universe and you the conduit for it a battle between the lead/gold takes place inside you. you can take things away from the gold and use it in lead but it remains difficult to stay golden. it can cause catastrophic internal strife to stay golden.

My personal signature sums it all up. but good luck the universe has many law of attraction style scenarios for you including your fears, so eliminate your fears as well. gonna be wild ride.

You can go read the wikipedia sources, most are quoted from medical journals. Just because '___' is higher in schizophrenics doesn't mean it causes dreaming or is released near death.
