A violent tornado or tornadoes killed 160 people and injured 2000 when it tracked through 20 coastal villages in the eastern states of West Bengal and Orissa. Many of the homes were constructed of mud, with thatched roofs, and people were pinned underneath when they caved in. Ten people were killed when the boat they were traveling in was lifted 20 feet into the air and smashed against the banks of a river. In Chakislampur, near the town of Danton, nine laborers who had been harvesting potatoes were killed when they were swept up into the air by the winds and then slammed back to earth. Fifty passengers of a bus were injured when strong winds blew it into a nearby canal. Local villagers cut open the doors of the bus to rescue some of the passengers, who were later hospitalized. Thirty-five children were crushed to death when a school building being used as a shelter collapsed at Goborghata in the Balasore district in Orissa. The tornadoes flattened 15,000 homes and left more than 10,000 people homeless.

Description Seventy labourers were injured, 27 of them seriously, when a portion of an under-construction bridge collapsed in Upper Assam’s Dhemaji district. A section of the Bogibeel road-cum-rail bridge at Karenchapari Mechaki collapsed when a heavy vehicle was trying to cross while repair work was on.

About 180 thatched and tin houses were damaged and many trees uprooted in an unseasonable violent tornado that hit Dera, Endalapur, Tarapada and other villages under Rajnagar block of Kendrapada district on Saturday. At least one person was killed and 12 sustained injuries in the tornado. Jaladhar Rout (45) of Tarapada was killed when lighting struck during the tornado. Many cycles and paddy bags were tossed around like toys in Dera village, where at least six persons, including two children were injured by flying roof tiles and metal sheets, said villager Tapan Parida. Pranakrushna Das of Endalapur village had a narrow escape in the tornado when some villagers managed to drag him out of his grocery shop, damaged in the storm. The fish market at Rajnagar was also damaged in the tornado, Sahoo said. "Many customers were purchasing fish and meat from my shop at Rajnagar. Suddenly at 11am the tornado hit our areas. My tin roof shop was damaged," said Sankar Behera a fish seller of Rajnagar. Road communication was affected due to uprooting of many trees. About 20 boats were also damaged in the tornado. Rajnagar tahsildar Bhabatarana Sahoo and other government officials rushed to the tornado-hit areas, including two medical teams. "The authority will clear the roads soon by removing the trees. Some schools and cyclone shelters in tornado-hit areas are jam-packed with women and children," Sahoo said. "We have started distributing food to the affected people. The authority arranged polythene covers for the affected too," he added.

Tornadoes can and will strike anywhere and anytime as long as the conditions are set for it. The US's Midwest is tornado central, but tornadoes can happen on all continents! I've read that only Antarctica is the only one without tornadoes!
