The mad scientists are doing what it says in the headline. It takes a 'special' hormone to unlock ancient genes and allow them expression in an ant living today.....they'e also discovered that ants have a genetic 'monster tool kit' on board so no doubt we'll be hearing a fair bit more about this. Come back dolly the sheep all is forgiven! Some of the comments express varying views; ie "What gives them the right to play with nature"? To. "this could be what we need to cure disease". I find it a little freaky and given the arrogance of many learned intellectual people I'm more than a bit worried. I can imagine one being taken to a British pub so mates can see and then the thing escapes, you get the picture?

Very interesting!

Assuming the ants' traits are in fact an "ancient throwback" as the article suggests, maybe we can do the same with chickens or emus to unlock dinosaur-like traits?

One step closer to Jurassic Park

We are soooooooooo gonna get it one day. Of course, I prefer giant ants over my hungry neighbors for an end-of-the-world scenario.

Mrs. Korbudsky weighs about 350 lbs and I've seen her axe chickens. The axe looks like a toy in her hand.

Yep, killer ants would be much more preferred than a Killer Korbudsky.

Perhaps if there was a way to unlock the though processing center with hormones for humans our world be a lot more interesting.
The article stirred my head into thinking that the ants have may already have a mechanism via the queen to alter the larvae by chemical means in relation to stresses placed upon the colony. If the nest is being raided, the ants may be under stress and excrete this type of hormones on those rare occasions as stated in the article where these ants have occasionally had these super soldier ants.
There is still so much we do not know about the world.

Not to worry. This was cut & pasted from the article

"Supersoldier ants can occur naturally in the wild, but only rarely. In the deserts of America and Mexico, their job is to protect the colony from raids by invading army ants."

So if it were to escape at the Pub, as the OP asserts as a possibility, it would be just an ant with a big head on the loose in the British Isles. Come to think of it this is how we got the "blessing" of fire ants here in the US!

Spread the wealth baby!!!!!!!!

This is quite good ants are the closest to us,they build there own civilizations and work together, these could be good weapons of war if they manage to make them life size,it would be like starship troopers lol

Only a matter of time before they start making women's boobs blow up with milk and they're unable to go through doorways or see their feet. When that day comes, we'll all drown in milk.

We'll all be freaks soon. There'll be no room for anybody who's normal.

This is just like Toxic Avenger, except it's 21st century and not a B-film. Front-row seats.

Oh gee, great. Now when i get my new house, i will have a new breed in town, chewing up the wood and colapsing the home. BY BY trees. Another infestation to worry about.

Hey, didn't they do something real similar with Bees quite some time back? Yeah, that one worked out real well.

I read the article..as I do every article I come across with Genetic modification of existing life forms and I can't find an answer to a question in there. I don't even see a hint of the question. WHY?! What was the pressing problem where the best solution was to perfect the method to take a rare Super-Freak Ant Solider and mass produce it??

Anyone else seen the reports of how some species of ants can literally kill and consume a full grown adult under the wrong circumstances? Would I be safe in thinking those weren't swarms of Super-Freaks, but just regular old Ants of the vicious variety? What would a full swarm made entirely of these little beasts manage?

Just think... a couple ants lost to the count and finding their way into something leaving the facility which made them, kinda like Africanized Honey Bees.

(Just because we CAN...doesn't mean we SHOULD!)

If you believe as I do that life very much represents a fractal, forever in and forever out. Then just as we are creating superants or supermosiqutoes by way of genetics, someone or thing is doing the same to us currently. Those ants probably don't even realize it is going on, nor think about themselves individually compared to the rest of the colony. We probably don't even realize.

All I can say is wow

DNA holds everything we ever evolved from within it could we use hormones on other animals and insects to create even more freaks? or even dinosaurs? complex yes but impossible obviously not.

makes you think what else their making without telling us

Maybe they already have. One time my neighbor asked me to kill a spider on the side of her garage. I said that i would do it and grabbed the broom. Two other neighbors were outside watching it. I rounded the garage corner and to my surprise, i stepped back. This light brown spider had a total diameter of about a foot. It was a hairy thing. I got closer and whipped the broom at it. It fell down and raced past us at lighning speed. We all ran. It stopped in the longer grass next to the garage. I grabbed a shovel in my garage and i got close enough to swing at it. I killed the thing. All i could think of at the time was that i did not want this thing to have babies and decide to make a new home at my house. All four of us saw it. I tried to look it up on the net, but i could not find the species. A week later me and a roomate of mine were drinking beer and i went outside to have a smoke. I was on the front porch and this black fly thing buzzed by my head and landed on my car. I went to check it out. The fly was bigger than a 50 cent peice. I went back inside and told the roomate and i grabbed the fly swatter. It was gone off my car. As we were going back in and i told him about the thing, he did not believe me, but what happened next he sure changed his mind. As we were going back inside the fly thing buzzed between us almost hitting the roomate in the head. It landed on the sidewalk in front of us and then on the porch and then it flew away. crazy. I'm glad it flew over to the neighbors house.

From what I have gathered this is not GMO. This is the application of a hormone native to the ant's system that when applied in this way causes this morph to occur. This is completely within their genome and this phenotype modification is caused by hormonal influences, which can be applied by ants in certain situations, as said earlier in this thread
