My wife's supervisor got a call a couple days ago from Iowa State Police because she was listed as next of kin. The statie goes on to inform her that her niece just died in a car accident, that her boyfriend made it out alive but she had been trapped in the car when it caught fire. He went on to add that she died screaming and begging for her life as they all stood by and watched.

Why the hell would anyone even mention those gruesome details to the family members? What kind of insensative prick would tell the family those details? He didn;t have to lie but damn, he could have conveniently left those details out and showed some discretion towards her family. The woman was 26.

At what poiint do you have some compassion and show some tact and morals? They just let her burn to death and listened to her agonizing cries for mercy and they did nothing. They could have shot her in the heart or head or something and spared her that slow and agonizing death of being burned alive. At what point can these people show mercy? This is the U.S. government for you, they have no laws advocating for showing mercy to those who cannot be rescued.

Honestly if it was me and i had been that cop, i would have yelled out to her to call on Jesus and then shot her in the heart or head. I could not have just stood there and listened to her die that agonizing death and do nothing to ease her pain. My God what has this nation become? This country has become a nation devoid of any compassion and mercy. God help us all, i am ashamed of my country.

I would hope if I was in that position someone would have the compassion and mercy to spare me that slow agonizing death. That cop was probably thinking more about his pension than sparing her that painful death. I would not have, damn the job and the pension. When money comes before showing compassion and mercy, you know youre a damned soul.

Sounds like something one of those troopers would say. In Iowa they are vicious, I am not sure about any other state really. But they are notorious for inhumane things I guess. My heart goes out to the family of the lost loved one.

I hope I'm never in that situation but maybe I can give you a little insight from the legal side of this. Number one, telling the family about the details is definatly cruel and not needed. Number two, you can't just shoot someone. If a bullet is fired there must be an investigation into the officer. Even if there was 100% no chance of her surviving the accident that one bullet would negate that and he could be charged with murder. The reason for this is because at that point the bullet ended her life, not the car accident or resulting fire.

This is just terrible on all sides but you cannot blame the officers at the scene for not shooting her. That's just insane.

She was pinned into the car and the fire department could not get her out, they gave up and stopped trying to save her. There was no saving her, and not one iota of mercy granted to her. So it's better to just let her die screaming in agony begging for her life? That is unacceptable.

hmm - this is the sort of " story " with a ` dammed if you do , dammed if you dont ` twist

jus suppose the police had taken your " advice " and double tapped her - can you imagine the ATS threads :

" police execute car crash victim " ???????

also you are advocating they lied about the details ? would you advocate them falsifiying the official inncident report too - or thier testimony under oath before the corroners court [ inquest ] ?????????

all of which will one-day go on public record ???????

my only cooment on the actual inciden would be :

are not fire extigusishers std load out for any police vehicle ? [ i dont mean the tiny fook useless civilian " car sized " unit - i mean propper mid sized ones specifically for tackling a vehicle fire

unless the fire was already out of control when units arrived - i would expect some approriate response

Omg how horrible.

They could have told her she died instantly or something besides those details.

That poor woman is going to have that to think about for the rest of her life. I would much rather be lied to then told that someone I loved died in this manner.

How could the fire dept not get her out or put out the fire. They are the FIRE dept?!

I have seen two videos in the recent months of complete strangers saving people from accidents, how did the fire dept not get her out? They are the fire dept. Im confused there. They put house fires out but a car fire they couldnt? They could have put it out and then cut her out..

My thoughts and prayers go out to her family and her bf, because he is going to have to live with this as well.

what fire dept ? what fire men ? - are you reading a different story to me ??

the OP says ` iowa state police `

and yes in many RTAs the police are first on scene - as they are on mobile patrol - while the fire / rescue units typically have to turn out from a fixed base

I got stuck in interstate median during a major ice storm back in 93. Been there several hours. State popo finally came up on me, asked me for my license and insurance. No concern to my welfare. A guy pulls up in a 4x4 with a tow rope and eager to help. This %^&#@ tells him he can't because he doesn't have a towing license. I lost all respect. $65 and he did call me a wrecker. Probably related.

What if you shoot, and she keeps screaming? Then you shoot again and again and she just keeps screaming?
What then?

Sorry to hear of your loss. Thats bad enough for you to lose someone in a fire. Fire is a tragic way to die. Can you imagine the onlookers standing there unable to help for the flames? Think how they must have felt? Modern world has us motoring around at speed hauling a firebomb in the trunk.

I have a scanner and I always cringe when I hear "overturned and on fire".

That sucks, what is wrong with these pigs? They didnt have to tell that she was screaming in pain.

Unless they ask you should keep details like that out. What happened to professionalism? Oh yea they dont have any

First the cop was/is the north end of a south bound donkey.

But, the other poster was right - shooting her even to save her from certain death would be murder under the law.

The law is very seldom about mercy. Heck, it's not really even about fairness, justice or right and wrong in many cases.

Nobody had it in them to mercy kill her then?
Nobody had a gun?

They just let her suffer...

She needed a good cop like this guy.

The information given to the family was far too detailed, some things are best left unsaid

The real issue here is, why on earth couldn't the fire department put the fire out and then cut her out, as mblah said. what sort of fire dept just 'gives up' and leaves someone to die in agony? I think that warrants an investigation imo.

to be blunt - i am deeply suspicious of onsided claims with no external evidence - but hey ATS seems to lap them up

or do you really believe that everyone just stood there ?

including the alledged uninjured boyfreind ?

As i understand it the car was pretty mangled and already on fire, but she was still alive and screaming when they pulled up.

I just cant get over the lack of compassion towards her family and towards her. At what point do you cross the line and stand for your principles? Burning to death is one of the more horrible ways to go the pain of having your nerves destroyed, of sucking in that hot air and burning your lungs till they were scarred and no longer taking oxygen. Thats basically what happened, her lungs were so damaged she couldn't breathe anymore and her screams ceased amd she finally passed out but she suffered there until she succumbed. Its just so appalling.

This is a case where Anonymous should post this assholes information on the internet.

Sorry but I'm going to call this story very fishy. The fire dept cant put out a fire? They just gave up? Thats very odd indeed. And the police decided to give gory details to the family? Just out of the blue eh?

Just imagine if they didn't tell her the details, then they find out later from a report from it. The cop would probably get the crap sued out of him.

So that's my guess why he included that specific detail.
