The point of my post was that the Cascadia subduction zone is capable of causing horrendous damage to the west coast and nobody knows when or how bad it will be in spite of all our modern monitoring equipment and historical studies. And you won't find a single seismologist who will tell you otherwise without being a liar.

Yes it is, but its been dormant since 1854.

that on/off shore area (Cape Egmont Fault Zone) does get some swarms from time to time, most of the bigger quakes are to the south of the mountain/volcano though in the South Taranaki Bight.

Note: just to add I consider a swarm as a series of earthquakes over a short period of time, say a day or several days, not over a month or a year with gaps between
These quakes I mapped are aftershocks of the 4.9, a main shock has occured, so it can't be a swarm ( unless we get some more 4.8's-5.0's in the same spot over the next few days and that seems unlikely)

Re. the 2 Bismark Sea quakes.
I wonder why the bigger one had such a huge S Wave signal?, on the lists its just a ho-hum regular mid 5 quake at sea,but that is because its presented in mb.
look at the SNZO graph of it
it looks like a mag 6 to me

Maybe here is your explanation? Good call. Just leave the seismos on and we will tell them the magnitudes!

along the same lines as Chile and Colombia, a new Excel 2010 style column bar graph of the numbers count for .......New Zealand

there are no yellow bars available, so purple is the new yellow
I don't know if I will change the icons to purple as well, they show OK on the Google Maps but not so good on Satellite or Google Earth views.
You can see on that how the introduction of the SeisComp3 system has only made a difference to the mag 1 and mag 2 numbers of quakes located. I suppose it brings the other mags in to the database faster though.

may take a while to load the page, 9346 icons/events
pretty quiet year compared to 2009-2011, although the July 7.148Ml S of Taranaki bumps up the energy released figures for the year, the actual number of quakes are down overall as it only had a handful of aftershocks.

In California, EQ's of this scale don't make me bat an eye, but here it is a totally different game. We're not prepared.

I did a test changing the yellow icons to purple, what do ya'all think?
thumbnail, click then enlarge with the + magnifying glass thingy

its easy enough to change the icons right across the board on all the maps I have ever done, with a few clicks on Dropbox.
I kind of like it, more of a subdued tone, and they do still stand out, there has always been a bit of a clash between the yellow and orange icons.
I'll have to change the current purple icon ( for mag 9) to brown or something, not a big issue as they don't happen very often

Just looking at the link Muzzy gave, I had no idea there have been so many aftershocks.
My hope is that this episode is calming down, and no larger quakes are in your New Year. Be Safe.
