Tsunami anyone?

Very possible, especially locally.
Puterman, you may reach your mag 6.0+ EQ "prediction" quota for the year yet.

Maybe an undersea landslide? That shallow depth throws me.

Tsunami amyone?

Good lord, that's shallow as heck.
PuterMan, could this be a foreshock? It seems almost too shallow to be the main/only event, but then again, it could just be how the planet rolls once in a while. I'm not sure what to make of the depth at all. Do super-shallow quakes tend to have different aftershock patterns, how does it effect the plate along the boundaries like this one is near, etc? What do you think?

There's one I haven't heard before. Thank you for making my day with a new phrase to unleash on people!

So they're still trying to figure out the depth. OK, that makes more sense than an unusually near-surface earthquake of that strength.

Here is a pic of seismicity in the area:

The USGS technical page shows this was a strike-slip quake.

You're so funny...As much as I think I'd like to really, truly understand this stuff, the conservation of angular momentum and the spatial derivatives of the Green's functions stomp right on my daydreams.

(I'm going to save it to my "learning file" anyway. I may tackle it someday, after I dig out my 20 year old calc and physics books, lol)

I'm trying not to excite myself to all the earthquakes in the Americas. This is a cluster all along the spine from Alaska and it's now seemingly headed south with two in the last bit in South America. Two 5M's in South America is nothing and I would be an idiot to suggest on their own they have some meaning. It's just the signal seems to be travelling 'all' along the spine. Like when you have back pain and you feel it in your head and in the heal of your foot. I'm sure it's nothing. And I'm sure I'm just thinking the eclipse in Australia means something as well.

AS I stated before a few days ago, it seems that the whole of the East side of the Pacific is moving together. Just had a 6.0 in Chile and smaller one in Queen Charlotte. I think you can expect one of significant magnitude between Chile and Queen Charlotte any time. It would seem to me that when several small quakes occur that that would be the ground kind of settling.. Once the ground and material settle it is then time that the larger plate can move.

But my brain is too tired & can't spit it out!!!

Also, increasing in size & all 10.1 km deep.

Well the actual expression we use is "up and down like a whore's drawers" but I thought perhaps our American friends might not understand that (but looking at the urban dictionary maybe they would). It rhymes much better!

Did you mean 5 pointers? Looking at the last 24 hrs there are 7 which is only slightly above the daily average, and all the later ones gave been 4s.

Yep, The east end of the Ring of Fire is for sure compressed to max... (Probably why EAST Ky had the 4+ mag).
Very creepy.. I have a bad feeling a really big one is coming.. a mid 8, just south of Alaska. (in the water).

The compression is triggering small 'pops' in the midwest and even Maine and Canada as of late..
That stress has to be released.
