Powerful Quake Strikes New Zealand City

A 5.8 magnitude earthquake has struck near the New Zealand city of Christchurch.

The quake was at the relatively shallow depth of 2.9 miles - making it more likely to cause damage - and comes 10 months after a 6.3 quake hit the city, killing around 180 people.

There have been no reports of casualties, but Radio New Zealand said malls and office blocks had been evacuated and power had been knocked out in some districts.

"It was incredibly violent," one caller told the radio station.

"All the water in my birdbath slopped out and I could hear everything falling over inside.

Dreadful. I have really good friends who work at the hospital in the City and live on the hill that overlooks ChCh.

When we last spoke they told me that parts of this beautiful city had been turned into almost quick sand by the previous two earthquakes, which can no longer be built on.

Wow, how many more are they going to get hit by? I feel their pain. I love you folks in the land down yonder, and i will be praying for you. We get earthquakes in my area of my state on a weekly basis but none of them that powerful. I'll have my church add you guys to our prayer list.
