Well, you don't need a license for an Air rifle, but you need a license for a shotgun. And they're very few gun shops around Britain.

When I was like 8 I got a...

still have it....then a few years later I got a pelet gun that looks almost exactly like a beretta

But now that I'm 22 I don't really have the desire to go shoot squirrel nests with a shotgun - or shot some soda cans with an AK...so I only have those two guns somwhere stuffed up in the attic...

My dad does a lot of deer hunting tho - he has a shotgun from WW1 that's absoultely beautiful that he still uses - some other shoutgun with a scope (never did quite figure out why you'd have a scope on a shotgun) - a remington and a couple others - I'd have to ask him their exact names, as I'm obviously not really into guns...

I've been giving it some thought though, and I am interested in perhaps getting a small handgun solely for protection purposes....anyone know what the price range is for a decent one? Or perhaps a specific model...?

Well, Minime, its called freedom. I own a 410 bolt action , my husband owns a rifle, a shot gun, and a muzzle loader. He hunts for deer mostly, and rabbits sometimes.

I like knowing that I own my gun. Even though I haven't shot it in a year or more. It's one of those rights that I strongly believe in. Now, at the same time, I am not going out and waving it around either. It's there if I need it, or want to hunt.

Edit: I would like a hand gun at some time in the future also.

Because we refuse to allow our government to take them away from us. It also has the added side effect of the government having a healthy respect for the general populace.

I would suggest a 9mm Glock perhaps a baby Glock(Glock26) nice and small and a really well made gun great for CC. Though You might want to get the grip extension for that gun alot of people have their pinky hang off he bottom of the gun because its so small, and with the Grip extenstion it will fit perfect.

Price will vary though if you buy new or used. I say about $450-$500 for that glock new But Im sure you could get a handgun for $300 used.

Sweet...Thanks. Yeah...I'm digging the full-sized glock with the light add-on - you wouldn't even have to fire that thing to scare the # out of someone - lol

My sister in law is a real estate agent. She has to go to a lot of vacant home and show them to people. She carries a small hand gun in her purse, just because you never know. I am glad she does.

She has a concealed weapons permit and she took classes on how to use it. I think she is being very smart in doing this. Too many stories of murders and rapes anymore to be ignorant or naive.

Yea I like the full size better but thats just me
Also they have a really sweet laser site that fits perfectly inside the glocks counter weight. If you dont fire guns alot I think it would be perfect for self defense. If you ever need it put the red dot where you want the bullet to go nice and simple.Plus you have they whole physiological factor of the laser dot It has stopped many a knife wielding crazy just by them seeing a red dot on their chest.

I second the Glock, and if you're getting a gun for protection, I wouldn't recommend anything smaller than 9mm, and as for myself, a 9mm is relatively cheap and fun to shoot, but I wouldn't carry one for protection.

But if you get a Glock, you don't really have a choice but the get a 9mm or bigger, because they don't offer a model that shoots anything smaller in the US.

Too bad you didn't ask two years ago. I had a Keltec .40 that was concealable (reason for going with the .40) if you're seeking a CCW. When I moved to NY I traded it for a shotgun for hunting. When I get my pistol permit I'm getting it back. I really miss firing that thing. Anyway, I would have offered to sell it to you back then. I paid a nice price too.

I could always sell you my hollow points. It's illegal here to even own handgun bullets without a permit. 2nd amendment, not in NY. I want to say I read that even with a permit I could not own hollow points up here. I'm not sure on that one (doesn't matter right now since I don't have the handgun currently).

Speaking of CCW, man I miss Florida. Four to eight weeks and it's yours. No questions asked. Up here it pays to know a justice of the peace. Thankfully the in-laws know two and my wife's grandfather is retired from the sheriff's department.

[EDIT]: My buddy in the HCSD in Tampa carries the glock .45 and a .38 backup. Both are fun to shoot but the .45 will take one shot anywhere near center mass for effectiveness and the .38, well it's fun to shoot at least. I've heard stories of big guys taking 3-4 hits from a .38 and still not going down. Granted, it wasn't a heart or head shot, but still.

Also, agreed on the 9mm -- fun to shoot but most good dealers will rightly so steer you away from that as a primary.

So why would a 9mm not be the best idea for protection purposes?

titian...I think hollow points are illegal here in FL too - but I could be wrong - I know a couple people who have them but I havn't heard of a situation when they've actually used them...
