Last American troops out of Iraq whoop as 9-year war comes to an end

KHABARI CROSSING, KUWAIT — The last U.S. soldiers rolled out of Iraq across the border into neighbouring Kuwait at daybreak Sunday, whooping, fist bumping and hugging each other in a burst of joy and relief. Their convoy’s exit marked the end of a bitterly divisive war that raged for nearly nine years and left Iraq shattered and struggling to recover.

As of Thursday, there were two U.S. bases and less than 4,000 U.S. troops in Iraq — a dramatic drop from the roughly 500 military installations and as many as 170,000 troops during the surge ordered by Bush in 2007, when violence was at its worst. As of Saturday night, that was down to one base — Camp Adder — and the final 500 soldiers.

Is it just me or is this not getting more coverage in the media? This is major and brings to an end a bloody and painful chapter of human history. So far, this is the only source I have seen reporting the withdrawal of the troops.

Regardless, here's to a safe journey home for them.

For the last few years the western world had more mercenaries than it did troops.
I'm glad the low earning, danger facing troops are home.. however im certain we have 10's of thousands of highly paid corporate mercenaries in Iraq watching oilfields, killing and raping Iraqi's.

It's unfortunate that they'll mostly be sent out to Iran soon, but I'm happy for their momentary reprieve.

Which, will in turn, allow for more troops to be deployed into Iran now....

We're just doing the old shuffle routine. It's by no means over. As many of the soldiers were going out of the revolving door, the mercenaries were going in. We are there to stay.

Is it just me or is this not getting more coverage in the media?

It's not a 'we won victory parade down Central Ave', now is it. Just a glad to get the hell out thing I think. For the troops anyway. Welcome "out", troop...

I understand that, but this is big and yet, I have not seen a lot of media coverage for it.
