After leaving earth in 2001 to travel 27 months far beyond the moons orbit, the Genesis probe returns to Earth on Wednesday containing particles from the sun. Stunt pilots who have worked on such movies as The Hulk and XXX will be waiting to retreive the capsule before it hits the ground.

news.bbc.co.uk
The Genesis probe, which left Earth in 2001 to gather particles blown off the Sun, returns its cargo on Wednesday.

It will eject a capsule that will enter Earth's atmosphere at 40,000km/h (24,000mph) before slowing, with the help of a parachute, to fall over the Utah desert. Hollywood stunt pilots are waiting to snatch the parachute in midair to prevent the capsule hitting the ground.

Scientists hope the particles of solar wind can tell them about the evolution of the Sun and the planets.

Please visit the link provided for the complete story.

The particles contained inside the Genesis probe will be the first extraterrestrial particles retrieved by man-made means since the moon rocks in the 1970s.

Some of the materials will be turned over to UK scientists while most of it will remain in the US.

UPDATE:

After an as-yet unconfirmed problem, the probe crashed in the desert at high velocity, seemingly destroying it and its contents. NASA scientists are currently seeking to determine if the remains are safe to collect.

I have information from a reliable source that the Genesis is carrying a captured alien back to Earth. That is why they are having helicopters secure the probe - they don't want the alien to escape into Earth's atmosphere.

It's a gaseous being from Alpha Centauri...if it got into the atmosphere, all water on Earth would disingetrate!

250 million dollars down the drain! It looks like the capsule is broken apart. I hope the thing didnt bring any alien viruses back with it!

It split open on both sides.Doubt its still intact inside

Nasa is having a little re-entry problem as of late...
I do hope that Nasa can salvage at least something from this mission..

watching live and the helicopters land in the distance and heat looks cool, they dissapear

why do I see some people thinking that aliens may be messing with NASA things making them unable to get back down to earth

I think saw some wierd looking thing hop out of it after it crashed!

While it does suck, and unlikely they will recover the highly sensitive materials, at least it wasn't a manned mission!

AAHHHHH GREMLINS!!!!!!

though on a note, I swear that I heard them say "there was no deployment, they are approaching it like an alie....a live craft"

Imagine this exact scenario on a manned Mars mission...Scary!

Is anyone else watching CNN? They keep replaying the same footage of the capsule in the ground and I may have been seeing things, but I could swear that in between replays of the footage, it cut to a view for like a second of where the capsule crashed, but it had been removed from the ground?

I didnt notice anything.I had NASATV and CNN at same time.

CNN reported that the recovery team wasnt gonna move it because they were worried that the explosive bolts that were supposed to release the parachute might be active and explode if accidentally moved.

It looked like just a large dark hole right? There looked to be nothing there and looked to be a much larger impact site then what was shown while the man was stding next to it. I wasn't and am not sure what I saw or didn't see, but at least someone saw something out of place for a moment like I did.

I don't find it a waste of money.. even if it did fail it's still an attempt to learn more about science. I'd rather have tax money spent on things like this rather than constant foreign interventions (wars) which lack a purpose.

NASA's strategy of "better and cheaper" is a garbage plan. If you want something to work good you need to make sure it has everything it needs to work.

I caught the footage here at work on FOX. They show the Sat falling from the sky from several angles. But, each time it is about to hit, they change clips to show it post impact. Why do they not want to show the impact itself. Have you guys seen the same footage or have any of you seen the impact?
