Police to test laser that blinds rioters

www.telegraph.co.uk

A shoulder-mounted laser that emits a blinding wall of light capable of repelling rioters is to be trialled by police under preparations to prevent a repeat of this summer's looting and arson.

This is a serious move from the Met. Wanting to blind people. Seriously?

Surely, you can't blind someone temporarily?

"The laser, resembling a rifle and known as an SMU 100, can dazzle and incapacitate targets up to 500m away with a wall of light up to three metres squared. It costs £25,000 and has an infrared scope to spot looters in poor visibility.
Looking at the intense beam causes a short-lived effect similar to staring at the sun, forcing the target to turn away"

I wonder how far down the road to approval this is since a major newspaper has gotten hold of it.

Yeah it's not enough to deafen people and nearly burst their eardrums with LRADs, now they have to blind them with lasers too. :shk:

Figures, this world is idiocracy day by day. Let's spend our research learning how to hurt people more than we can already do. Let's not spend any more trying to research important ideas like how to stop people from starving, curing a common cold-what a slap in the face for Doctors world-wide.

Yesterday I was in Tractor Supply. For $19.95 they are selling a small, portable, battery powered 20 MILLION candlepower spotlight. That would do the trick if your looking for retinal burnouts.

WE NEED AN ARMY OF ALREADY BLIND AND ALREADY DEAF RIOTERS (APOLOGIES TO ALL DEAF AND BLIND PEOPLE OUT THERE).

THE MAJORITY OF THE REGULAR RIOTERS ARE "SPIRITUALLY" DEAF AND BLIND

Not permanently blind... In lamens terms its essentially taking a flood light, amplifying it and shining it into someones face, obscuring their vision.

Originally invented to deter pirates from vulnerable cargo ships.

SOURCE

It is our belief shipping companies and captains will, for the foreseeable
future, transit troubled waters with security teams onboard. Photonic
Security Systems have developed the SMU100 on these grounds. At
500m it can project a 4m wide beam onto your inbound threat, making
your vessel too painful to look at, or approach.

SMU100

- A vital addition to BMP4
- Helps to eliminate the use of fire arms onboard
- The system has no port restrictions
- Efficiently protects life and assets, with no
- escalation of violence
- Adjustable beam width allows to efficiently paint the
target, even at close range
- Built for purpose with every area of industry in mind

SOURCE

Next will be LDS100 mounted on police cars:

LDS100

The LDS100 addresses piracy, today’s most urgent
nautical threat, in a non lethal and humane manner.
At 1km it can project an intense 10m wide beam
onto your inbound threat, making your vessel too
painful to look at, or approach.

Great, I see a resurgeance of mirrored sunglasses.
Or welding goggles I guess.
No biggie, wait for the first use and the hundreds of folks that claim ssi benefits as they are now blind.

I would agree, it's meant to only blind temporarily, I think they also want to use lasers to replace flash bangs as well. I would think that controlling how much light they direct at someone will be hard. Someone standing 10 feet away will not get the same dose as someone standing 50-100 feet away, so giving someone permanent eye damage is a possibility, although I don't think they care.

Haha yeah, get some extremely reflective glasses to deflect the lasers, really good earplugs to block out the LRAD, a gasmask to protect from smoke grenades/pepperspray, and some make-shift body armor to protect you from rubber bullets and baton smacks, and you're set to protest.

I suggested in another post the use of brewster window sunglasses as a countermeasure to this kind of technology. Just remember that the closer you are, the higher the level of retinal heating encountered and that's what you have to worry about. The cops will be wearing these kinds of glasses, find out the manufacturer and buy some.

Lasers of specific power levels that provide a dispersed beam produce a target level exposure in the uw/sq cm range, so the closer you get the more "focused" the beam and the higher the exposure level and the longer you will be blind due to retinal heating. It's usually distance ranged to produce between 15 and 30 minutes of blindness. But too close will cause permanent retinal damage and possibly permanent blindness. At normal power levels that produce 15 to 30 minutes of temporary blindness, 15 to 20% of the population will more than likely experience permanent retinal damage and/or permanent blindness, which is generally experienced by people with pre-existing acquired or genetic conditions.

I've looked at this a lot since I have worked with large lasers and I have UVietis. I can't stress it enough, buy brewster window sunglasses! The exposure from reflection/diffraction at close ranges (say a 1 to 10 story apartment window or balcony near the laser source) can do as much damage as being "in the line of fire."

If they are going to use this kind of technology on people, it's time to start rethinking peaceful protesting, since they might as well drop a low yield nuke. Cancer or blindness, it's all bad.

Cheers - Dave

If they use that against peaceful protesters, the lethal force line is almost crossed.

I'm sure they will say it's all non-lethal. But as history have shown time and time again, whatever they say is non-lethal ends up killing dozens or hundreds of people (tasers)...

Couldnt the same be said about rubber bullets, pepper spray, tear gas and even tasers? All of them will have differing levels of effectiveness. The Taser is mentioned since you can manually end the cycle before seconds, and the drive stun portion is pain compliance and varries depending on where its applied and for how long.

Headlights, floodlights, flash lights, lasers, sound....

All are variable and not constant. The laser guns used for traffic enforcement disperse the farther it goes, something like 3 feet for every 1k feet traveled.

As far as the police not caring maybe protestors should learn the different between protesting and what rioting is.

Back in the day, and still to this day, anyone that ever points a red beamed lazer light or any other light for that matter in my eyes, was and still is giving me grounds to give you an automatic butt kicking.
You dont mess with peoples vision, no matter how non violent you may claim it to be.

Cops shouldnt be allowed to go that far. Your vision is everything. Boo on them

Do not be totally surprised that protesters in the future will be auto chipped from a distance. Similar to the tag sniper rifle in use today during riots.

Oh please people. We are just lucky that aren't rolling out the Pain Rays or the pheromone bombs. Ill be blinded for a few if it means avoiding those horrors.

You can aim these too! They wouldn't have to take down a crowd full of people just to stop instigators, like with a flash bomb or pepper spray.

If anyone is lucky enough to have an experience with one of these playstation guns, simply pretend to be blindish and sue the sh!t out of who ever it is that needs to be sued.
