For comparison

The 7.0 magnitude quake that struck Haiti in 2010 was at a depth of just 8.1 miles

This was a 6.8 at a depth of over 40 miles, the deeper the quake the more padding there is to soften the shaking.

No reports of injury or damge as yet.

MEXICO CITY (AP) – An 6.8-magnitude earthquake has struck Mexico's western Guerrero state, causing buildings to sway as far away as the nation's capital. There are no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The U.S. Geological Service says the quake registered a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 and was centered about 78 miles (126 kilometers) north of Acapulco.

High-rises swayed in the center of Mexico City, and shoppers were temporarily herded out of some shopping centers.

I thought this might help... It gives some perspective as to location and how it may have hit the different areas. This comes from the USGS:

There has to be lots of damage, hope this was not a pre shock.

People in one part of the capital's upscale Condesa neighborhood ran out of their houses and gathered in the streets, hugging each other while some shook and began to cry.

On one street, a group of women joined hands in a circle, closed their eyes and began to pray.

"Please God, help us and let everything be OK," said one. "It's OK. It's OK. Everything is OK."

Its looking like everything could be ok.
