Where did all this "Ascension in 2012" stuff come from?

I'm curious... and I'll probably never truly know where this originated from. But somehow, in 2012... there's a story out there, in books, and on the internet, that we "ascend" in 2012. It gets crazier than that, really. The popular story on the internet is that not only do we ascend (become something greater than human, whatever that means) into another dimension (we're in the 3rd now, and we go to the 4th or 5th, I get conflicting stories on that)... but aliens are somehow involved? And this is what messages from "SaLuSa" and all that Blossom Goodchild stuff is about? Where the HELL did this come from? How did it start? Is it real? Anybody know?
And if it's all made up baloney, home come so many "channelers" tell the same story? Is there a club where they all get together and discuss "the plan"? What is the purpose behind it? Disinformation? Distraction?

All I can guess at, is that this came from the Mayan Calendar, somehow... with a bit of help from Zecharia Sitchen's book(s). Which I have not read...

I think the crazier story is the end of the world.

Spiritual evolution is just an alternative theory.

It came from the Mayans..

They never actually said the world would end in 2012...just that there would be an apocolypse ( revealing of something not known). They spoke about an ascension.

It came from the imaginations of people with over active imaginations.

People would rather prefer to live in a world of dreams and predictions, than face the reality of the world they live in.

It is sad.

And most people don't buy into an ascension cause of THEIR fear.

Fear is the only thing that'll hold you back from moving on.

It was the media that said the mayan calendar was about the end of the world, not the mayans.

They, and several other civilization said the same thing..all from different parts of the world. All with the same knowledge...remember they didn't have cell phones or computers back then. And i doubt they ran around the world making sure everyone had the same story.

The end of the world "as we know it"

Apparently thats what was said, people just saw "end of the world"

It meant change, something different.

i will wake up on the 22nd of december 2012 and no doubt be out buying christmas presents as usual

It actually did.

This is something that someone, be it now, or be it in the ancient world, thought about, pondered about, and then made it into a nice story that could be forever retold.

And then went and told several other civilizations to pick the same date and event?

I don't think so.

Even back then stories got told, and spread about the world. It is not uncommon to hear a story from one civilization and that story being retold, albeit, a little bit differently by another civilization.

People just became aware of things, and started thinking for themselves, exploring. When they did not have to worry about being killed anymore by wild beasts or invading forces, they had time to think, to become intellectual and explore the mind.

No they did not and you do not have conclusive proof that they did. You are going by hear-say. The end of the calendar means the end of the year, what comes after the end of a year? That's right, another year.

Or you must be stupid enough to believe the Mayans didn't understand seasons and did not have their own calendar/time/years. These were essential to surviving - without a proper understanding of seasons it means you grow crops less efficient, which means your people could starve.

Well, now... I do remember reading and watching something about Terence McKenna and his Time Wave Theory, about how he and his brothers took some hallucinogens... well, I forget the details. But, it was something tied into the ICheng... whatever his theory was, it ended in 2012, as well. The seismograph readout just fell flat right at December, 2012... could have been rubbish, but this was back in the 70s before I was even born. I don't think the Mayan 2012 junk was popular or even widely known, then. If at all.

Just one of many things which make me question all of this.

Still... I would like to know the reason that people like Mike Quinsey spew things like this, on a weekly basis:

"The life you are about to enter is far removed from what you are used to now. It will have purpose and able to fulfil your deepest desires, and give opportunities to explore the billions of different planets throughout the Universe. Life abounds everywhere, and you will also move between dimensions. Words cannot do justice to what lies ahead for you, but be assured that you will never be disappointed, and it is but a stones throw away."

Just a paragraph from "SaLuSa"'s latest message. If he is making it up, the question is... why?

The bigger question: WTF is going on?

Hi OP,

I don't think the Mayans or any other ancient culture ever spoke of Ascension, the after life perhaps but Ascending no.. If you look up Theosophy, Occultism, New Age Philosophy and the like you will see a general trend which is spoken of.. the calling up or rapture.. people often mistake these terms for Ascension.. Ascending simply means Enlightenment. It is when you reach a state of meditation and are able to consciously exist outside of your body. Although there have been a few gurus and buddhists who have claimed to reach this stage of evolution it has never been officially recorded or documented as fact. Saying that, it is unlikely Ascension is something accsesible to most if not any humans..

It is a nice philosophy to think about in the sense that it gives us something to aim for in becoming better human beings but I wouldnt think about it in the context of us being lifted out of our bodies en mass by some ancient alien race..

The New age or Old occult philosophised a lot around nirvana, ascension and enlightenment.. perhaps you could start there if you want to locate the source of how ascension got to be mixed in with all the Mayan 2012 predictions, however they are apart from each other and not one and the same thing.

The world changed in 99-2001. If you didnt notice that, you were either in a coma or are still sleeping.

If you payed attention in history you will learn that there have been times where man and animals reached extinction levels. Every time we re-emerged we were stronger, smarter and more evolved.

2012 is the beginning of those changes and not the end.

there is also the power point that Quatzequatel would return at the end of the present (5,200 year)

The sky god Quatzequatel meaning”Feathered Serpent” is the Mayan version of this tradition.
In the Old Testament the messiah is often referred ...

ascension...destruction... the Phoenix rising from the ashes...
most every mystical bent is being associated with this 2012, so why not the Biblical Rapture or perhaps an ascension that sounds remarkably like the 'Translation' of the base/crude/vulgar human being into a higher spirit being

thanks

The internet propagates things. I could post on YouTube saying the moon is made of green cheese and some morons will take it up. 'It was on Youtube so it must be true'

The Mayans simply ended the calendar at this point. I mean they had to end it somewhere... That said it is also supposed to mark the end of one cycle and the beginning of another.
Some 'remote see-ers' have said they can't see past that date. But then they must be pretty cr*p anyway as not one of them has solved the case of Madeleine McCann.
It was all helped along with people jumping on the survival bandwagon to sell their books, dvds, conferences, survival gear etc. But the airy fairy, touchy feely 'I'm an indigo child' lot couldn't cope with the doom and so a much nicer outcome was born. Including the claim that our dna is changing (proof?).
So take your pick
A) the world is going to go belly up
B) we are all going to be magicked to a different dimension. Start work on your chakra now!
C) nothing will happen, same old same old.
Actually the way things are panning out at the moment 'A' looks quite plausible!
