This thread has turned into a bit of a slapfest with the participants but I'll ignore that and address the OP. The original idea of this thread is a
good one with a solid message. Although, "jingoistic" doesn't seem like it was the best used description of posters on the board.
In fact, "jingoistic" is a word most people haven't heard of or haven't added to their vocabulary. In essence, this thread is what you are railing
out against. (Don't worry, I do it too.)
Threads with catchy headlines or explosive messages draw the most attention. No matter whether or not you care about stars or flags you will be
inclined to use this tool to draw a larger readership. The reason for this is we are hardwired to seek the most attention possible for our public
works. (Lets face it, it wouldn't be online otherwise).
It's all marketing baby!
Hmm... Now back to the original idea.
People lash out against the MSM for lying or shaping the story, yet the alternative outlets also do the very same thing. Everyone trying to shape the
view of their audience, all for more ratings, more money, or more _______ .
Moving along...
You mentioned books, to which someone said the publishing companies have their own interests. And they do! Oh wow, the sources are running out for
good information.
Lets see if we can find some...
Jimmy Westlake down at Otto's Mechanic Shop always tells me to buy Michelin tires, he has a contract with them to carry more of their brand than all
the other brands his shop represents.
Mom used to tell me that drugs were bad, but she often medicated me for just about any minor injury or sickness. The Doctor was happy about it though,
he was getting to go to all expense paid conferences to be informed on the new drugs the drug companies were coming out with.
Moving along again....
I knew this girl once, and I asked her if she was telling me the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. It turns out she was lying. Mainly
because she was insecure and the idea that her friends would find out what she said terrified her. She lied through her teeth. But hey, so have I, so
who am I to judge?
Well now, her mom was a real piece of work. Sheltered the girl her whole life. Used to blow things out of proportion just so her daughter would stay
away from things like booze and boys. Turns out the daughter got older and woke up to the exaggerations, now she doesn't talk to her mom but like the
two things she was supposed to stay away from.
Another fellow from the same neighborhood fits in some how as well. He worked his whole life on developing a water filtration system for the city.
Damn near perfect too.... Except there was a flaw he hadn't caught before the system went into production. He had two options, say something and ruin
his career, or take his retirement in all it's glory. Someone else would be responsible if the flaw turned into something larger.
Hmm... Still can't remember why that city had E. Coli poisoning.
Oh hell,
It was just the prisons that were mostly affected anyhow, who cares?
Sure not Susan Waterby, that older woman guard. Now, don't get me wrong, she's a great lady. Hates the damn people she has to keep an eye on and
maybe a little bit of a bitch because of it. But you have to love her, with all that respect she has for the law! Yes sir, she makes sure she berates
every last prisoner she has contact with throughout the day, just to let them know how they screwed up in life. She loves the job too, still takes
food from the cafeteria supply home with her everyday for her family. (common practice, cuts down on grocery bills)
Yep, quite a woman, and sure hates criminals. Not matter how big or small....
Ah well,
Down the line, time to wrap this up.
To sum it up in one word: Motive
Everyone has a motive in what they do, what they say, how they feel.
The last one might throw you off, but people actually manipulate their emotions to get reactions from people. Actions and words are more apparent
sure, but the emotional thing, that's scary. Some don't even know they are doing it.
So that's it. Everyone has motives. Pick out the motives and then you can read the real message.
