Hey, does anybody on the forum have Gmail(the email service offered by google)? And if so, is it worth the hype?

Gmail Official Website

Also another interesting note about Gmail that i found while searching...

gmail-is-too-creepy.com...

Wonder if any of the stuff on this website is true...

i have been using gmail for prob jsut over a month. i dont mind it. only thing i have against it is incoming emails never arrive when they should. hafl the time its fine and the other half you get nothing for days than all of a sudden you got like 20 new emails at once with dates ranging back all over those days.

i currently got 6 invites on my account.

I've been using it for over 2 months now, it's not bad. It's good for organization (grouping the emails into conversations and such) and for sending large files.

I have one but... I did not succeed on selling them on ebay. The truth is I never use my account, but hey if you feel like buy one because it is dirt cheap now, or I could give you one. Let me know what you feel about it. Nothing spooky about it. Works fine.

for now gmail's just like hotmail or yahoo mail or whatnot, just another free email service...(paid for with ads). some comments on it:

a) the interface is a bit nicer than most other web email clients -- most of the menus and pages are loaded into the page as _javascript, i think, so it runs really fast over even slow connections...not as many page loads as with other webmail clients.

b) the organization's a bit smoother, too -- it automatically groups emails into "threads" like a discussion board, so it's easier to find things you're looking for without wading through a huge list of messages

c) the huge storage space is nice, but mostly good for sending large attachments, like someone else said

d) once you've got a lot of messages, you'll be able to google your own emails to find older conversations, which could be useful; if you've only got a few emails this doesn't add anything useful, but could be neat after you've used it for awhile.

e) it's not that creepy -- it just scans your text and runs ads, the same as on pages with google ads on the side -- but even so i'm just using it as a "social/travel" account, and wouldn't feel comfortable using it for any kind of sensitive communications...i'd want something easier to use pgp (or other encryption) with, and probably wouldn't use email at all.

Perhaps the very same day people start writing properly instead of using SMS-slang.

There's rumors it won't even be released to the public at all.

Anyway to answer your question, I do use Gmail and it is worth the hype. You really do get 1GB of space for free and if you rack up enough e-mail accounts, it's almost like having a remote hard drive
.

There's some nice features too that are really innovative such as labels.
