Obviously martial law preparations...

With economic collapse and war on the horizon, not to mention unconstitutional BS like S.1867.... yep.

They better get more than a Humvee if they plan on pulling anything around here. Lots of farm and heavy equipment that'll run right over that thing.

Think I figured it out.

Looks like a soft top '998. You can't put a crew served up there.

He was getting annoyed/mad because you were bugging him with stupid questions. HMMWV's are pieces of shi* if you ask me. The only thing they got going for them is good clearance. Other than that, I don't see why anyone would trade a Chevy or a Ford pickup/SUV for one of those.
Also, due to automatic/higher powered weapons/body armor being more widespread/available than before, the law enforcement is going to step up their game.. Which would include them getting newer gear and weapons that are more suitable. Due to population increase, small towns are going to start having their own SWAT teams or equivalent, so they can react and deal with higher-level threats.
It is much cheaper/easier for the Army/Mil to give away older equipment, and it makes more sense to supply your own Law enforcement instead of some 3rd world sh*t-hole.

Not everything is a conspiracy.

True, but when you start obtaining equipment and devices that go why outside the normal policing equipment, you open yourself up to that type of thinking.

Remember, once they get this stuff, they have to justify it's worth/existence. Which means using it.

Yes, now instead of purchasing duty gear like weapons, vests, optics, and NVG's with $$ from their own pocket, they can just request and use surplus military gear. I see nothing wrong with that.

Agree.

Instead of sending it to the scraps or cannibalizing the equipment(s), its better to provide it to the local law enforcement agencies during the current budget crunch at multi state levels.

Did I say it was a conspiracy? As for him getting mad for me asking questions..screw him. He's a public servant. I didn't and still don't see anything wrong with my questions. I asked because I didn't see any point in using it unless they were to armor it or outfit it with weapons. Besides, the good ole boys around here will just take it from them and joy ride in it. Now, as for our county getting a SWAT team. Our Sheriff has screwed the books so bad that the county is over a million dollars in the red and he's been sheriff less than two years. The department has been cut down so bad they have no jailers, no reliable patrol cars because they keep wrecking them and have no funds to properly fix them. Their commercial account at my job has been suspended multiple times for non payment. Where are they going to get the money for a SWAT team and all the expenses that come with it? The county won't increase their budget or give them any more funds. I sure hope they aren't planning to use deputies as SWAT because that will not only be the funniest damned thing I've ever heard but also the saddest. Barney Fife was a better cop than these buffoons around here. They're a joke and we've shown them that on numerous occasions.

I have to buy my own supplies for work. Why shouldn't they?

I'm not sure of the cost. The only thing they've bought for it so far was an ignition switch. The county has already pretty much cut them off so I'm not sure where they plan on getting funds. The deputy acts like he's just hot sh$T driving it around though.

So did the county also receive funds to properly license it. Another question you can ask and also watch to see if they do.

I haven't noticed any plates on it. I honestly haven't paid attention to that. If not I'm sure they will use plates from one of the wrecked cruisers if any at all.

i don't know if any of you have seen the movie equilibrium but I feel we are heading in that direction in a hurry.
the cops and military have such a huge advantage right now. super kevlar everything and advanced sniper death squads in high tech vehicles. nothing wrong with that, right? it's sooo obvious we are going down that road, the cops wear ALL black and now they are getting LAV's and what not... when has that ever been a good thing?

The following is my opinion as a member participating in this discussion.

My city bought several loach helicopters from the DOD over the years, so I believe this is a good program considering that it saves tax payers a lot of money by reusing old equipment.

The armored vehicles that they buy tend to spend more time being used as a publicity gimmick then they do performing any real police work. They are always taking them to schools, or other community outreach activities. Kids think they’re neat, and so they perform something of a public relations function.

As an ATS Staff Member, I will not moderate in threads such as this where I have participated as a member.

Pentagon snared in govt sting as fake cops easily acquire $1.2mn worth of military gear

The US Department of Defense has been caught out selling large amounts of military supplies to a fake police department. The fake department was created by the US government itself to sniff out waste and fraud.

The Government Accountability Office issued a revealingreport last week showing that the Pentagon sold more than 100 controlled items valued at $1.2 million to a fake police department set up by the government watchdog agency through the 1990s-era 1033 program, according to a report released by the GAO. The 1033 program allows local and state law enforcement to apply for excess equipment from the US military.

The gear that the GAO received from the DoD included night vision goggles, simulated M-16A2 rifles and pipe bomb equipment.

The government watchdog set up a fake website with a fake address that led to an empty parking lot and gave the information to the DoD in their application for the supplies. The GAO then received the fake items in less than a week after applying.

“They never did any verification, like visit our ‘location,’ and most of it was by email,” Zina Merritt, director of the GAO’s defense capabilities and management team, which conducted the operation, told the Marshall Project. "It was like getting stuff off of eBay.”

Following the fallout from this report, the Pentagon has now promised to tighten its procedures for verification, which include going to the police department in question to verify its location and obtain valid identification when law enforcement comes to pick up supplies.

The GAO sting operation’s groundwork was laid after the 2014 police shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. The response to people protesting the death of the young man was met with military tanks and weapons as the Ferguson police department tried to break up the protests.

Further, it was confirmed that much of the equipment used by the Ferguson department in the protests was the same that was dispensed by the 1033 program, after the Marshall Project and others uncovered the connection.

Following the Ferguson protests, then-President Barack Obama issued an executive order that prohibited the US military from giving away their equipment and made them deem other specific pieces of equipment “controlled,”according to the Marshall Project.
