California Road Slides Into Ocean After Storm

news.sky.com

Heavy rain in southern California has caused a huge portion of a road to collapse into the sea, leaving a gaping hole in the side of a cliff.

A 900ft section of highway south of Los Angeles crumbled and fell into the Pacific Ocean on Sunday.

The section of Paseo Del Mar in the San Pedro area has been edging seawards for months but this is the first time a sizeable chunk has broken away completely.

The chasm created by the landslide plunges to a depth of 75ft in places

The scenic route was closed

Madness, this looks like a big size. I hope this isnt the start of what we all know is coming. Shows how weak the land is there.
It looks like there was nobody hurt. The San Pedro area.
They say on the BBC link this pay still be a hazard and might get worse. I cant believe this wasnt posted. I searched a LOT of key words and could not find it.

rain saturates soil.. loosening it and weighing it down with the start of winter landslides are common in Cali. I have worked many... this one is large but still not uncommon. Cali is NOT going to fall into the ocean no worries.

Forgive me for treating this so cavalierly, but my first reaction to your headline was "Great start!"

They built a road at the edge of a cliff next to the ocean for the view not the longevity of the road.

Not a story, happens all the time to PCH.

Yep.

There is constant continuous erosion of the cliffs on the west coast. Just nature doing its thing.

Man's fault/responsibility for building a road there.

Well this is in California, it happens here. Its not like it was anything special this was actually expected which is why that road has been closed for so long.

Yep... mods are hard at work, using iffy judgement as usual.

Hey, every post can't be a new theory of relativity, can it?
I posted the vid, and that's all the comment i wished to make.

And yes, this song is about California sinking into the ocean.... quite relevant to the topic.

This was all over the news here in the UK as if it was uncommon and something huge.
Well the news I was watching anyway.

So it happens a lot.
I just thought, maybe, that maybe there was a low earthquake and it unsettled some land and "bang" or "splat" whatever, this happened.

Had no idea this was normal.
Between this being "normal" and having 4+ earthquakes most days. You guys over there dealing with this have hard skin, Ill give you some credit.

I remember there was like a 3.4 earthquake in the UK a year or so ago, it was MAIN NEWS for days.
Sky went into somones house and we seen a hardrobe had moved and a few windows had been smashed, it was like the end of the world. How you people live with this every day. I love you all...

I grew up next door to this exact road. This area has been slipping as long as I've been alive, and no doubt longer. Not news. Don't know exactly the section of road this is, but Palos Verdes Drive East moves so much, the road has to be repaved every few months. Been a while since I've driven out there, but it's odd and creepy, yet normal.

I actually don't think it has anything to do with home building. Most of the area in the slip zone is vacant and wild, no homes. Just a very seismic microzone.

I'm pretty sure this beach is at the bottom of that road.

Well - - roads don't collapse everyday - - but the whole west coast of California slips and slides and moves a lot from heavy rains and earthquakes. Landslides and road closing are pretty normal during heavy rains.

This particular road was built on unstable land to begin with. Apparently it was already officially closed because of unstable conditions.

Goleta is near Santa Barbara. That's quite a ways from San Pedro.

When in high school - my friends and I used to climb down the cliffs to the beach. Can't say its a smart thing to do. Lots of jagged rocks.

Yes I know.
They are about 90 miles apart. The Ranch P.V. hills didn't have the name and Golita did so that is why I used it as an example.
They both slide though,

They both slide though, Golita slides quite a bit more.

We could also go the other way - - Santa Monica to Malibu.

PCH is always getting closed from landslides along that stretch. A real pain - as the only alternate route is through the hills.

This area started sliding two weeks before the rain and was on local news.

You guys are so far behind on the news.
