A Russian news anchor, while discussing a news story, suddenly holds up her hand displaying a rude gesture at the same moment she says Barack Obama's name.

During a news broadcast on Russian TV, anchor Tatiana Limanova spoke about Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s appearance at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. Shortly after, the anchor mentioned that Medvedev will soon take an APEC leadership role previous held by U.S. President Barack Obama. The only odd thing to note, however, is that Limanova says Obama’s name while simultaneously showing her middle finger.

Seriously though, I'm curious as to exactly why she apparently feels this way.

I know in some European countries the index finger is the bad one instead of the middle finger. Is there someone from this part of the world that can tell us what this means in Russia?

I remember the Europeans fawning over Obama like he was a "literal" savior a few years back.

Now the middle finger is given,in a gesture of pure token of loving kindness.

FYI, I have a friend from the Ukraine..

She says this isn't an offensive gesture in Russia..

The Russian equivalent of flipping the bird would be to place your thumb between your forefinger and index finger.

I think this hand gesture meant something else.. Like "I swear if I have to hear Obama deliver ONE MORE speech.."

Naw, in many countries the index finger is the offensive one. I learned this in like 8th grade French class, before we took our summer trip to France. Don't point with your index finger in France, btw.

the various gestures used around the world would be enough material for a thread of their own...
