Egypt’s cabinet said on Monday it had resigned as clashes raged inTahrir Square between police and protesters demanding democratic change in the country’s biggest crisis since Hosni Mubarak’s ouster.

State television quoted a military source as saying the ruling military council had rejected the resignation, but Information Minister Osama Heikal told the official MENA news agency the matter had not yet been decided.

“The government of Prime Minister Essam Sharaf has handed its resignation to the (ruling) Supreme Council of the Armed Forces,” cabinet spokesman Mohammed Hegazy said in a statement.

Sharaf’s resignation, if accepted, threatens to derail parliamentary elections scheduled for November 28 — the first polls since Mubarak was toppled in February.

all to confusing and with no reasoning the Gov. is handing its resignation over to the military who will still retain power...

meanwhile the US steps up its support for these protestors and stands against the violence I wish the US gov. would do the same for its own people.

The United States said it was “deeply concerned” by the violence which has left at least 24 people dead since Saturday.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said it was important that US ally Egypt move toward democratic elections.

“We’re deeply concerned about the violence,” he said. “We call on restraint of all sides.”

the protestors are coming together it has been said a few times that they are from only one secular group in egypt this story states otherwise...

Friday’s peaceful rally, which grouped Islamist and secular activists, called on the military to hand power to a civilian government.
It also demanded more control over the constitution the new parliament is to draft.

Protesters called for the withdrawal of a government document that proposes supra-constitutional principles, which could see the military maintain some control over the country’s affairs and keep its budget from public scrutiny.

fair demands from any free people I would say lets hope the Egyptian people and Gov can achieve this with no more bloodshed.

umm actually no.
This "deeply concerned" and "urge restraint on all sides" language is used when they FAVOUR the side doing the killing, but still wish to be seen as caring humanitarians.

You see the same when Israelis kill a whole bunch of Palestinians. "We are deeply concerned" and "urge restraint on all sides".

When they are on the side of the protesters, the language is more like that seen for Iran...

Later in Washington, Mrs Clinton told reporters that the US administration "very clearly and directly" supports the protesters. US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton: "We support the universal human rights of the Iranian people." "What we see happening in Iran today is a testament to the courage of the Iranian people, and an indictment of the hypocrisy of the Iranian regime - a regime which over the last three weeks has constantly hailed what went on in Egypt," she said.

C'mon guys. I am deeply concerned, and urge restraint on all sides.

Egypt is a mess right now. Has been for awhile. I'd like to make an informed decision concerning the choice of words for this post, but unfortunately information known to my government, and others, is very heavily filtered.
