HPD: Police shoot man armed with rifle in downtown park

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Houston police have shot an armed suspect in a downtown park.

Details are sketchy right now, but there are initial reports that Houston police have confronted a man armed with a rifle in Tranquility Park. An officer shot the man. He is reportedly wounded in the ankle. He was taken to an area hospital by ambulance.

That is the same location where the Occupy Houston protesters have gathered. It's not known if there's any connection between the man and the protesters.

This is where Occupy Houston is. Details are still sketchy, but Occcupy Houston has given their account from various protesters on their Facebook page. I'm interested in what provoked this person, or if they were mentally unstable (most likely). This is developing on local news right now in the Houston area. Details are very sketchy according to mainstream news

Quite the opposite. I'm a registered gun owner, and have my CHL as well. I don't mind him obeying the laws, which are very relaxed with long-barrels in Texas, but don't start shooting around areas I work on a daily basis.

this just in from witnesses at OccupyHouston: an unknown man walked into the occupation and started firing a 40 caliber rifle. As far as I know, no one was hit. The assailant was apprehended while still in the park, and the witnesses I spoke with believe he was shot in the leg by HPD... more news as it comes in

3 witnesses confirm no one but the assailant has been hurt, but beyond that I cannot say for certain at this point. Additionally, as far as the witnesses know, the assailant was unknown / not recognized by anyone at the occupation. The assailant was allegedly dressed quite nicely 'in a suit'.

Yup. At least we can hear what this suspect was doing. Local news still doesn't have many updates on their 6 o'clock news.

This is one of the most disturbing police stories I've seen in a long time. An ankle shot??? That's the best you can do???? Why is he still alive? What happened to center of mass double tap??? Are you incompetent?

ABC's local news just aired an eyewitness account (I'll post once a video is up) and HPD responded to a "suspicious person" report and the suspect allegedly fired rounds in the air and into the water in the park before being chased on foot.

You can see where all this is going. How many times has there been a story about people with guns at occupy sites? The message is trying to be put out that the occupy movement are armed.

Go figure... the police protecting the OWS protesters... How could such a thing happen?

According to many of the posts on ATS, one would think the police would have joined the perp, and taken up arms against the protesters.

An armed 1%er dressed in a suit may have been bold enough to infiltrate the ranks of the OWS movement, but was summarily wounded in his ankle by eagle-eyed law enforcement on the look-out for raving well-dressed Communist lunatics with rifles.

.40 cal? That's a funny caliber for a rifle...I mean, they exist and everything but it's definitely an odd caliber to recognize.

He didn't fire shots towards anyone just in the air and in the water. Wonder what the hell he was doing. And it seems he got shot in the ankle whilst running away.

This story is the most bizarre story so far coming from the OWS, smells like total bs, to me. But then again right now we got no reason why to expect anything from the police and who knows, now our very own homegrown terrorist, time to bring the bill on that one to the table in congress, lo and behold we need to protect the peaceful protesters from harmful rifles and guns.
