the labyrinth on the floor at Chartres is actually celtic in origin, and is meant for cotemplation and meditation on the spriraling dance of life.
this church was built over a sacred celtic site(many lay lines here,including the 'rose' line)
the rose line apparently starts in spain,thru france,and into britain. there are 7 sacred spots along this line that have
been visited forever,but now have churches on them(to convert the pagans).
in the middle ages pilgrims woul make the journey to these spots for salvation.
