Terminals 6, 7, 8 shut down because of security breach and a separate incident at the Tom Bradley International Terminal. There are reports that the incident was an explosion involving a "flashlight" type device. At least 7 have been reported injured. However, there is still much confusion and lack of official confirmation on these reports. They are evacuating the airport. This is a breaking story.

LAX Shut down

Los Angeles International Airport was shut down early Saturday because of a possible security breach and a separate incident at an international terminal security screening station, an airport spokesman said.

No information was immediately available on the incident at Tom Bradley International Terminal, airport spokesman Harold Johnson said.

Officials also did not explain the possible security breach that shut down terminals 6, 7 and 8. The terminals are connected.

Flights were not being allowed to depart, but inbound flights were being allowed to land, said Paul Turk, spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration (news - web sites). Passengers were not taken off the planes.

Traffic was being diverted from the airport.

CNN

Los Angeles International Airport was closed Saturday after two separate security incidents, an airport spokesman said.

In one incident, airport police were responding to reports of a "suspicious person."

The other involved a flashlight with corroded batteries that exploded in Tom Bradley International Terminal.

Seven people were hurt by that explosion.

Department of Homeland Security had a different account.

The agency said that an explosive detection system machine got a positive reading from a corroded battery in a flashlight.

DHS reported that there was no explosion and that there were no injuries that they were aware of.

The area was evacuated as a precaution.

A LAPD bomb squad remains on the scene.

LA Times (free subscription required)

Viray had no additional information about the security breach but said the scare at the international terminal apparently came when a flashlight battery exploded as it was being screened by a Transportation Security Administration worker.

"When it was going through screening, the TSA individual touched it and at that point it exploded," she said.

CNN is reporting something about a "flashlight explosion" that has injured 7 people.

I think they're taking it down just in case.

What I want to know is who did or could do this?
Was it Usamah?

I can't wait for the conspiracy theories that come from this one.
Some will take the fact that explosions were initially reported and try to make some huge coverup.

Isn't there a saying that pertains to media goes something like
"initial reports are usually wrong"

That's the source I got, click on it and you will be taken right to the article...

They just will not stop... Looks like we're going to have to give up alittle liberty for safety...

Oh boy.... And to think they will just keep thinking of ways to get through the airports... If they can think of a flashlight just imagine all the other possibilities...

I have a feeling the explosion wasn't terror related, even though Sheppard Smith(FOX) was making it sound like 911.

At 9:50 AM, Pacific Standard Time - CNN - is saying the explosion was due to corroded batteries in a flashlight (possible, but unlikely) caused the explosion) and the second incident is a "suspicious am" at the airport. They continued saying hat 3 terminals were shut down and have been for over 2 hours. More information as it is provided.

Yeah right @ corroded batteries. Pull the other one. They're just trying to prevent a panic.

Tell me this, Why are the passengers on the just landed flights being kept inside the planes? For a "corroded battery failure"

FoxNews, former NTSB managing director Peter Golelz: "There's no indication that this is any kind of terrorist act". 12:53pm EST.

"I wouldn't want to be making a multi-leg flight today".

Incidentally the video footage showed the entrance of LAX where ambulances were gathered and stretchers could be seen along with EMT personnel.

Hi - I live in Redondo Beach, CA, right on the ocean. I can clearly see about 50 miles of coastline from where I'm sitting. I have a clear shot to the airport from here. It's about 12 miles from here, but I can see clearly when planes take off, as they take off over the ocean. At night it sometimes looks like fire flies hanginmg in the air when it's crowded. I see no traffic as of this moment (10:20 am pst). If I see any activity I'll report in ...
