I watched this sincerely amazing documentary the other night called Where Soldiers Come From

It's about a group of friends from small town America who after high school were faced with the WTF do we do now moment and signed up for the National Guard. It follows them before, during, and after their deployement to Afganistan.

It really portrays the disconnect between our governments and its citizens.

I'm not a big docu guy but this is an amazing film and highly suggest you watch for free at the below link.

I did not watch it yet, but thought I would add to your point about how prospects for military age people are bleaker now than ever. Primarily the up to now lessons in life have been a sub standard education, lack of jobs to fill, combat training on video games. Hmmm, lets see... What ever shall we do? I am gonna say that that is all precisely by design. Lots and lots of ready made soldier material.

I dont know the exact answer as to the question "Where Soldiers Come From", but I do know where many of them have been going lately...

...the HOSPITAL.

...for exercising their 1st Amendment rights lately at various Occupy movements around the country.

SICKENING!!!

Thanks for the comment. I'm not going to go so far as to say it's by design, but the current environment most certainly cultivates KIDS enlisting for all the wrong reasons. And it just perpetuates the war machine. As cliche as the argument is, it is truly sick that some guy will send KIDS to get killed and kill other KIDS for political gain.

I agree. My parents are college educated, but lower middle class. I have zero athletic talent, am smart but definitely not at the top scoring SAT range, my parents had just enough to not be considered need base but way too little to fund my education, and I am not a member of any sort of religion/group/whatever. The military was the only way I could realistically afford an education at a decent college.
