A Kansas City coach is caught on tape displaying racism to an African-American male student. One would hope this wouldn't go on in 2011...

My HS math teacher told my whole class we would be welfare recipients. We were all white as was the teacher.

If the roles had been reversed this wouldn't have even made the news.

Race card being played to the fullest IMO.

Personally I need more information before I will call the man racist. The video shows him calling a Student a "Future Welfare Recipient" but when asked Who is the future welfare recipient, the coach clearly says, "Students who don't get good grades"

So is that racist or is he right? Chances are if you can not get good grades in school you will be a future welfare recipient.

Ridicule can be a powerful motivator. But by itself it can create monsters.

That's because there was no racism. It was people using the race card and trying to be opportunistic. I see it just about every single day. It is disgusting.

I am not going to say you are incorrect because what you say is very VERY possible. However, just like I wont call this Coach a racist without more information, I wont say the so called "victims" are playing the race card without more information.

The article and video clearly says that it was more than just the remarks that were caught on video. It claims he makes similar comments and shows a bias even on the Coach's own basketball team. In any event, it would only take a bit of digging and school cooperation to find out one way or the other. Let us see this students grades. Was there actually a basis for the Teachers remark? Knowing what the students grades are will tell you. If the Students is right... there will be more people who can verify. Until this information surfaces, I reserve all judgment.

everything about this story is ridiculous.

it reminds me of the story about the little kid who made a hat in art class that looked like a rainbow colored KKK hood. No body thought a thing about it till he went home and showed his parents, then they called up the media and anyone who would listen as they called the school racist.

the only racist in this story is the kid and the principal who think only black people are on welfare. its the same mentality that assumes that educated black people are "acting white". its self-destructive... i hope this kid wasnt planning on a career in sports, he may have a tough time getting any schools interested in him after this.

but its all typical for the midwest it seems, for the poor urbanites and thugs of any race out here, every problem in your life is the fault of someone else.
they could smoke crack and meth every day, spend all their money on beer and prostitutes, wear their pants around their ankles a gigantic white t-shirts to their knees, hair frizzed out half braided with a pick sticking in it... if you dont give them a job, or say anything if they cut in front of you in line... youre a racist.

Multi-culturism NEVER works.
There will continue to be such incidents until sometime in the future when White Americans are a definite Minority.

I would suggest that "White Americans" are already a minority. I may appear "white" to most, but I am in fact an "Anglo/Hispanic". I believe you would be hard pressed at this point in time to find many people at all who do not have a mixture of nationalities in their families.

I had a teacher like that in Jr High and then the same teacher end up at high school. He often told the whole class that they all going to be on welfare and there was no future. The class was mainly poor and minority students. That teacher I had was a racist jerk and he hated poor people.

The only racism here are black people that think only blacks can be welfare recipients. My teachers used to make burger flipping comments occasionally. Same thing.

So, let me get this straight....only people of color are going to be on welfare? Or is the system designed to filter "black folks" to the welfare system?

If telling someone they are going to be on welfare is racist, then welfare itself is racist. Does no one else see this?

A white coach telling a black student that he's going to be on welfare one day is pure racism. There's no way to weasel out of that fact. The racist coach is guilty as charged IMHO.

So then only blacks are on welfare, and it is something that all black people should be ashamed of. Got it.

Perhaps the racists are the ones who stereotype black people are "welfare recipients". The coach is only stereotyping people who make poor grades as welfare recipients THAT is truth, not racism.

Perhaps you're much younger than I am, my friend.
In my day, there was a definite degradation assumed when relating welfare and minorities. It wasn't right, but that's how it was. I hope times have changed, but I'm afraid they haven't based on this story.
The media and society must agree that the coach was way out of line by saying this to a student - in particular, a minority student. After all, the story made the headlines and the coach is being sued for racist harassment.
And lets be honest here... do you really think the white coach would have said that to a white student? Hardly!

No, it is not pure racism. It would be racism if he said that he is going to be on welfare because he is black. You are imagining things that are not there. The charge will be dismissed by court.

I'm 39 years old. And in my day, the same is true...minorities were associated with welfare. But it isn't 'my day" or "you're day" anymore. Thankfully, things are changing. And I have chosen to be the change that I want to see.

Welfare is not just for black people. That one piece of logic completely destroys any argument that the OP was racism.

Star for you!
The coach is trying to instill "PRIDE",something lacking in this country. I wonder how many people know that back in the 1930's,they used to print your name in the Newspaper,if you were on welfare,it made no difference of skin color. Many people were ashamed to go on welfare. Many people didn't.

Now welfare has been institutionalized. Regardless of need,go get it! Your entitled to it!
Some,I may add, prosper on it,depending on certain types. People choose to see race, when they add color to conclusions..
