How do you crack a cold case? Try a cold case.

Nineteen Britons wanted on various crimes were arrested after being offered free beer by police in an undercover operation, according to Derbyshire (U.K.) Constabulary.

Dozens of suspects – for crimes including robbery and sexual assault — got letters from a marketing firm inviting them to call the company in exchange for a free case of beer, police said.
The calls were put through to officers at Chesterfield Police Station, who arranged a time to deliver the beer at the caller’s home, police said. At the appointed time and place, the caller was arrested.

“These suspects are people who have managed to evade arrest for some time, so we have used different tactics to find them,” said Chief Inspector Graham McLaughlin. “It has been very cost-effective, as it can take a lot of time and money to track people down.”

The operation was part of Operation Rocky, which targets “serious acquisitive crime across north Derbyshire,” a police statement said..

Hey LJ,
they have totally pinched the idea from the cops in the USA,who a few months back did the same operation.
They offered free sports tickets to folks with outstanding warrants then busted them if I remember correctly.
It was on youtube a while back.

No such thing as a free luch,eh buddy?
Heheh.

I remember watching something similar on tv a while back.
The cops setup a fake lottery type thing and called people with warrants claiming they won a crap load of money.
Messed up, but funny.

That is funny but knowing our justice system the cons will probably cry human rights and get their free case of beer.

S & F for the laugh.

Yeah-That would be the best way to do it IMO-Give them the free beer, get them to sign for it-Then bust their asses.
Small cost for a bust, just a box of beer! And the cops are covered-they gave them the beer!

Trouble is,now the news is out,the crims won't claim the beer,or they will send someone else to get it on their behalf.
Oh well, the cops will find another ruse soon enough.

I highly doubt they got to crack one open.

Once their signature hits the paper, or they walk out the door.....

It is over........

After being in the system myself, forever, as a teen -early 20's.............I can say that I have little sympathy for them........sometimes you have to save some $$$$$ and man up and walk through the door to take care of the issues............It might take a while, but at least you will be square with the law and can start over being a better person.

That is really funny, however it is worrying to see what depths the police will goto to get an arrest, my motto is cant do the time, dont do the crime, but i think they have gone a bit too far with this. Showa how ingenious they can be though.

It reminds me of the argument about cops doing hidden speed traps.
Is that OK or are they being shady?

I think I sort of agree with you that they may be being shady.

But they have to be shady to catch shady crims I guess.
Its different applying that to someone doing 5 over the speed limit IMO.

I do agree with you........But it is too late, they have been doing it for a long time.....

To me this is no worse than installing cameras on highways and then send you a ticket in the mail......

we are losing rights and privacy everyday.

If they knew where the guys were to send them a letter why would they have to go through an elaborate hoax about beer, why not just go arrest them like normal? This story makes no sense to me because of that. The whole idea was that they couldn't find the guys, so how did they send them a letter?
