Do any of you feel the need to go out of your way sometimes to do something kind and generous for others?

I'm interested in hearing about more creative ways of giving back .....I guess I sort of feel as though the things I have been doing are becoming a bit redundant and ineffective.

I can't imagine a better place than ATS to gather great ideas so, having said that...I look forward to hearing any ideas you might have for me.

It may seem too little, but, in this day and age of hurry and rush, just acknowledging that someone exists can mean more than you could ever know. Taking the time, to look someone in the eye, and give them a big smile, and nod of your head, can make them feel like they are part of life.

Blessings for starting this thread my Friend.

I just listen, listening to someone is the greatest offering of kindness I have. Even people I don't particularly know that well, knowing someone is listening rather than talking I think is a great way of being a good person.

I don't have any money, but I end up helping others almost every day. I grade the dirt road with my tractor when it gets really bad. I cut the grass on the corner and across the road because nobody else will. I clean up around the lake after kids have parties and throw garbage everywhere. I pick up people walking and give them a lift into town. I help stranded motorists get their cars going or let them use my phone etc. I open doors for anyone. I offer help any time I see someone struggle with something. I always do extra work for my customers when I do have work.

I think times have changed because when I was growing up it seemed like everyone did what I am doing now. Unfortunately I am the only one in my area that seems capable of these little tasks or compassion for others regardless of their religion or skin tone.

It's interesting that you point out such simplicity.

I've noticed that in the area I live...when I try to look most people in the eye and smile, they immediately turn away as if they are uncomfortable or shy. I'm not sure what it is. But, when I come across the few that smile and make eye contact back...well, that is something I just can't describe.

You sound quite a bit like my new neighbor.

On the first floor of the building where I go for chemo, there is a bookcase and used to be books now it's empty. Next time I go I am bringing a big bunch of books for people. We have to sit for hours through chemo and so do the people who come and sit with us for the duration. So free books!

I kinda try to enjoy everyday and have a tendency to buy pastries in the morning that I let my coworkers eat. Im not sure it's a healthy thing. My workplace is a hectic work tempo but we have an atmosphere where everybody helps each other so I kinda like it.

I do some random acts of kindness when uportunity knocks. I have also notice the people who look away a don't seem to like being noticed. I figure it is a defense mechanism for the unknow or maybe im not attractive enough
. I am 1,9 m tall man and have long hair and beard so it might be from that also. But normaly I have a big smile when I walk around. Namaste

With the Holidays coming up. I will throw, what I call, a "beggars banquet" . We all know someone who has no family available for them to spend those days with. A college student, an elderly neighbor, you know one I'm sure.

Invite a few lonely folks over to share a Holiday meal with. It need not be fancy. Some of my most fond Holiday memories have come from people, I'd have never gotten to know otherwise. Some of the best pot luck dinners have been born of this tradition.

I really like that idea.....the holiday season is basically already here. I was out doing weekly grocery shopping yesterday and couldn't believe that they already had a santa claus in the store taking pictures w/ the children. Seems a tad early to me but, oh well.
