Yeah but has it been tested against a Sunburn?

How many does a ship carry ? can the system cope with a multiple attack ?

Fast response from yourself by the way.

I fear that the loss of one Nimitz class ship could spell the beginning of an era of American isolationism, with dire consequence.

Tempted to write a second sentence.

Yeah these big carriers are very expensive to replace.

Scale is a strength and a weakness.

Has the sunburn EVER been tested in a real war against a real High-Tech adversary?

hypotheticly what would happen if you sunk a nuclear powered surface ship?(has it ever happened in history yet?) I mean would it "melt down" so to speak or explode in another way or would it just sink and irradiate a good deal of that areas oceans for a while?clouds of toxic fumes? would it take out any escorting vessels, emp etc?it kinda seems if they managed to kill one aside from bragging rights (killing the first nuke carrier let alone the first american one to be lost in combat since ww2) it would seem that it might end up being more of a "problem" for the locals ecologicly speaking that is. i have to say if they kill a carrier it will have dire consequences and might even give china all the distraction it needs to swoop up on Taiwan or some other shenanigans.IF we loose one we loose the aura of invincibility of our surface fleet and our ability to impose our will globally with our fleet. if its war we are for sure going to "open up the toy box" so to speak we will have to wow with previously unknown weapons to keep our place at the top of the global super power food chain.
closest thing i could find to explaining what would happen to the carrier interesting read actualy www.nukestrat.com...

So if the west attacked Iran would this make other countries back Iran?
Would the arab world be finally pushed to far by us?
Maybe China will get sick of watching our constant warmongering
and start sending them arms if they havent already.
I dont like the sound of another west v Islam war, it would be dangerous

edit on 3-11-2011 by butcherguy because: Thresher, Scorpion, And the Kursk were all nuclear powered, and all sunk.

edit on 3-11-2011 by butcherguy because: I know they are subs, but they have nuclear reactors, all of which will leak before the fuel has decayed.

ok fair point using the subs as an example but i belive ALL of them sunk in deep water is the persian gulf deep enough to accommodate such things as far as i know we never lost a nuclear powered cruiser to accident or war same for the soviets with their cruisers and ice breakers but i digress.i dont think even with a few advanced Missiles that iran could pose a significant threat to a carrier battle group as even in the hey day of the soviets in their best estimates out of a strike of 600-800 missiles only 5-10% of the missiles would even survive(launched from 500-900km out) to potently sink its target or targets and if the soviets didnt have enough firepower to do it conventionally either so their doctorine called for sending in atleast 1 tac nuke into the mix to try to get a kill and even with that it was still at 5-10%,so unless iran is willing to lob a short ranged nuke i dont think we have much to worry about in the naval department. but i am still curious as to what would happen if they did sink one and the reactor had problems?

Anyone play Battlefield 3 yet? I thought it curious that part of the storyline deals with an invasion of Iran. The US even deploys 3 Aircraft Carriers that you fly over. I wasn't aware of the earthquakes they have overthere until I played the game.

Personally I think Iran will be like Libya in regards to US contributions. Although Iran boast 11 Million Troops it is still

From the Sea
They will deploy all 4 SSGN OHIO Class Submarines. Each Sub holds 154 Cruise Missiles and are extremely accurate. (Google USS Florida Libya) at 2500 km they would out range all known Iranian anti-ship missiles.

Three Carrier Battle Groups, Mine Sweepers, Attack Subs.

Update: While looking up something I found this site that maps out the target area. Anyone want to play a game of RISK? Actually the mental block for me right now is how to eliminate the troop threat. Knocking out Nuclear sites would eat up a lot of troops, not to mention new EMP weapons would likely be used to off set the sites operations abilities and thus resulting in area radiation.

Weapons that would drestroy so many troops in bulk would be similar to those in Desert Storm. Like Storm I think we should leave right after sites and resources were taken care of.

stopthewarnow.net...

Ground Troops would be hard to deploy in my mind. Would you want to? I'd rather see elimination of military resources and let them tear itself apart. If we had to deploy troops I wouldn't take the foot troop approach. Long distance and area denial approach.

Let's not forget from fiction
X-37B maybe we will see what it was doing for 8 months
HAARP can we make it hotter?

As always it's just my 2 cents

if i was an f-22 raptor pilot, i would be laughing if i saw one of those. but it would be challenging. i think a f-22 will stall and fall out of the sky before it can slow down enough to get a missile lock on one of those planes.

i think this is just a propaganda video so the enemy will underestimate the actual strength of the military.

A heavier emphasis on drones and stealth to map and then neutralize air defenses. I could imagine playing up the F117 while something else does the work?

Pretty sure the Nighthawk is already retired.....the question is "what took it's place?". Supposedly the Raptor and the JSF, but they don't seem to fit the role as well. I would guess we have some stealth "kamikaze" style drones to fill that role.

If Iran is attacked, first wave will destroy Radar installations, Missile Installations and Airfields. Expect a lot of Cruise Missiles doing the first few days work. Once Air superiority is gained, it's game over for the Iranian Military. There will be no invasion of Iran, more like an Air dominated neutering of Iran's Military capabilities.

Who cares about change?
Dismantle their infrastructure, Radio, TV, Bridges, Hospitals, Schools, Dams, oil fields, Airports, sea ports and Rail lines etc etc.

Again,,,Why invade?

No need to physically invade to destroy a country.

I'm just going to say this...

Libya didn't have a 140,000-strong Revolutionary Guard asymmetrical fighting force, aside from conventional military forces. Nor did they have homemade stealth fighters/patrol craft/drones. Or significant anti-air capability either. Or one of the largest stockpiles of naval mines in the world.

You're talking about the Bavar-2s? Well, I doubt you would even be flying an F-22 in the first place considering that you can seem to determine the difference between aircraft and skipping patrol craft. The Bavar-2s employ an inversion effect above the water, meaning that they fly above the water (safe from underwater weapons) while lying low under 100ft, good avoiding radar detection and attacking ships. If they can arm them with anti-ship missiles (or even Skhval torpedos like on their fast attack boats), then they would be very formidable.

Plus they are based of an old Soviet design- modern versions of this would be even more capable, and Iran seems to like building their own weapon systems (like their Flatfish stealth fighter).

Israeli Jericho Missle Strikes on Iranian Military Targets along with U.N. sanctioned Air Stikes of their Nuclear Facilities by NATO . They will then Recognize and Supply Arms to an Unknown Group of Iranian "Freedom Fighters" to engage the Iranian Army on the Ground .
