You guys do know that when an iceberg calves off a glacier, that means the glacier is growing, right?

340 sq. miles is roughly the same size as New York City. To put this in perspective, Antarctica is roughly the same size as the continental US. It's a drop in the bucket, but 340 square miles sound more impressive, don't you think?

Nice catch of article,.
I love to read shtuff like this,.
and I equally love to watch the naysayers try to say the earth isnt warming..
Bring it..

How its done, a submarine goes under the ice cutting the ice as it travels. The ice breaks off and adds to a rise in water level. This in turn will be blamed on global warming

Well there's my opinion anyway. Anything the government tells me I dont believe so ...

Can you tell me where EXACTLY this crack is?

The reason I ask is because the beings channelled at the United Nations, yes, the UN has spiritual representatives too, informed them that we avoided having part of the Antarctic shelf break off and cause a Tsunami to wipe out Southern Australia.

There's no doubt the Earth is warming, just isn't clear if humans are the actual main cause, or even a significant one.

well of course i agree with you..
personally it doesnt matter why,. to me, it is now about how to adapt

Before anyone says 'global warming' can I refer to text books we were taught from that said we were once covered in ice millions of years ago (when we didn't have carbon problems from cars and industry).

Just so the obvious can sink in a little that the warming is natural, and that we increased had warming in the 1400's and a mini ice age after that.

Here are 2 things to think about related to rising water levels:

1. As you say the submarine goes under the ice cuts it etc. etc......now....the ice is in the water. Correct? If you drop an icecube into your glass and it melts, will the water/liquid level in your glass rise? NO! the mass of the icecube has already displaced an equivalent mass of water in the glass so when it melts nothing will happen.

2. Water is the only liquid on earth known to EXPAND when cooled down/frozen! So therefore when warmed up its volume will decrease. The volume the water occupies when warmed is smaller than the volue it occupies when frozen.

The ice already in the water will not bring about any floods or rising water levels, the ice on land that melts, that is the concern.

And now fire away, tell me im horribly wrong

Hello!!!
The ice capes are melting. If you do not belief me go and look at satellite images for the past 10 years... SO yes jump on the climate change bandwagon...
Its no good saying its just a natural cycle, we cannot take that chance it is best to be precautionary about such things when the stakes are so high...

According to climatolagist Dr. Pat Micheals, "the last ten years show no statically significant warming trends, no matter you slice and dice them" in a report in the climate depot site.

Agreed. This is a relatively small piece of ice in the grand scheme of things, even if it melted completely within a month, global sea levels would rise by...

Probably nothing!

Really...

I MEAN REALLY...

Oh no the ice caps are melting...quick lets tax everything...Global Warming is MAN-MADE...keep watching the TV, keep buying things, get a loan, then get another loan, get a credit card too, eat a McDonalds, buy a new TV, do drugs...get vaccinated...

Jeez...if you knew anything at all about Global trends in weather and climate you would soon change your mind about the "ice caps are melting" BS. They have receded and grown for, well a loooong time. Get over it!

I like how it can be ascertained about the demise of the Polar Ice Caps through a series of sat images taken over the past 10 years...

Oh never mind...I cant win!

Calm down and get off your ranting horse. The verdict is still out but we should not be taking a chance. We are gambling with the future of our planet and putting industry first. We should be putting our future first..

I ain't on my high horse, trust me. If - and that's a infinitely big IF - humans have caused this "Climate Change", there is sweet FA anyone can do about it now, bar halt every single emission and pray that the Earth can be saved. But as we all know that will NEVER happen. We wont even reduce emissions by 10%.

This is a natural process and TPTB know that. The are using this natural process as a method of becoming richer through "fear"...when will you guys wake to this?

This whole, we cant take a chance-stance is baseless. This planet will and has remedied itself over billions of years because of dangerous gases, and humanity being here (industrialized) for a couple of centuries will have made very little impact on earth in the scheme of what she's been through!

The conception that carbon dioxide controlled climate fell into disfavor for a variety of reasons until revived by Callendar in 1938. It came into full favor after the work of Plass in the mid-1950s. Unlike what was believed then, it is known today that for Earth’s present climate water vapor is the principal greenhouse gas with carbon dioxide playing a secondary role.

Climate models nevertheless use carbon dioxide as the principal variable while water vapor is treated as a feedback. This is consistent with, but not mandated by, the assumption that—except for internal processes—the temperature during interglacials is dependent on atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations. It now appears that this is not the case: interglacials can have far higher global temperatures than at present with no increase in the concentration of this gas.

How do you know there is nothing we can do about it if you dont even know if we are causing it. That is not logical. The reason we cannot reduce emissions is because there are too many attitudes like yours. Dont get me wrong you might be right, I just dont think the risk is worth taking..

Hello....... The berg is already in the water, so how will this make sea level rise?? When an ice cube in your glass moves away from the other cubes does you glass suddenly overflow?

This kind of thing happens often and this poses no danger and as another poster said it's a little one.

As far as icebergs go, however, 340 square miles isn't anywhere near a record. A few have topped several thousand square miles and the record is a 12,000-square-mile behemoth spotted in 1956.

It's nothing like the movie "The Day After Tomorrow". Geez you guy's watch to much TV.

This is exactly right...and to go further, if every bit of ice melted in Antarctica, the global sea level would only rise by 1.5 metres. Why? Because a lot of it is already on the water so when it melts it has no effect on levels. The only ice that will have an effect is the ice on the land under Antarctica which will make sea levels rise.
