Egyptian official says Israel agreed to delay expanding Gaza offensive for 24 hours to allow Cairo to try to bring all factions into informal cease-fire

"The situation is intolerable and we are close to a dramatic decision that would end the bombardment of the south," cabinet member and minister Silvan Shalom declared on Tuesday.

IDF aircraft have targeted rocket squads in Gaza in recent days, but the Egyptian official says Israel has also planned a wider operation. The official says Egypt asked for 24 hours to try to bring all factions into an informal cease-fire and Israel agreed to give Cairo until around midnight Tuesday.

Gaza's Hamas leaders have not directly been involved in the attacks but Israel holds Hamas responsible for all violence from the territory.

Thing is, Hamas doesn't control everyone in Gaza. Some groups are too extreme to be controlled and they think Hamas are too moderate... so when Hamas say ``stop it`` they don't listen...

Anyways, I think Israel is about to launch a massive invasion of Gaza.

everybody saw this coming. shalit was the only thing preventing this. sure they released a thousand palestinians, but the next full on major attack and subsequent carpet bombing campaign will kill miraculously kill 2-3 thousand militants and avoid every innocent civilian, woman and child.

This is Egypts way of saying they will not let Israel bomb Gaza. Theyre stalling for the 24 hours so they can mobilize a defense for Gaza. Keep in mind the muslim brotherhood now controls Egypt, do you think theyre going to let the jews kill off so many innocent muslim? I put my money on Egypt trying to shield Gaza from Israel.

No? I thought Hamas were supposed to be bad asses. If they wanted to they could shut down these attacks, but the truth is they get a hard-on every time a Jew is killed. If they let Islamic Jihad do their dirty work, they can (try to) avoid the blame and still get off. Hamas are some of the worst scum on Earth and they all need to die. It's been shown that they can not be negotiated with, they refuse to recognize Israel's right to exist, and they won't be happy until every Jew is dead.

You may be right about another invasion Vitchillio. It's not the preferred method of dealing with these animals, but it has proven to be the only method; otherwise, rockets and mortars continue to rain down on civilians. I think that is what pisses me off the most. These animals are targeting Jewish residential neighborhoods when they could stand up, act like men, and point their rockets at Israeli military facilities.

At least air bases and army camps are legitimate targets of aggression; but NOOooooo, these assholes specifically target women and children, and then hide behind their own when the IDF comes looking for some payback.

It's time the IDF wiped Hamas from the pages of history (that's the phrase right?) once and for all, every last one of them. Tragically, innocents will die (because Hamas uses them as human shields) but in the long run that is the only way there will ever be peace.

Come on man, in any conflict both parties have dirt to hide. Hamas doesn't have a monopoly on "asshole". You sound almost as radical as them calling for genocide. Have a good one

yaaawwn..here we go again.. israeli paranoia and the same old lame israeli excuse to go commit more mass murder and crimes against humanity.. I don't think Egypt is stupid enough to intervene militarily in an Israeli offensive against gaza right now. Not gonna happen. Egypt knows that they would face sanctions from the US if they did and that Israel wouldn't hesitate for a half a second to attack Egypt as well.

I've covered this story for years, you could say it is my area of expertise, so I know the realities on the ground. The Israelis go out of their way to avoid civilian casualties where Hamas tries to inflict them specifically - even on their own people. I've watched as Israeli missiles were diverted at the last second because the person controlling its flight realized there were civilians in the area. I've seen Hamas "fighters" drag children in front of them, daring the Israelis to shoot. I've watched as Hamas used UN schools as a base to launch their rockets, and use UN ambulances as troop transports.

In this case Hamas really does corner the asshole market and I stand by my statement that they all need to die (That's what they want anyway, to be martyred, so the Israelis are actually doing them a favor.) But If I were you I wouldn't bandy about the term genocide when you don't understand the meaning. That's like saying destroying the Nazis was a genocide against the German people; that pig doesn't fly.

I find it difficult to watch while you constantly cheer Israeli aggressions in the assumption that they are fulfilling biblical prophecy. This has nothing to do with religion.

Well all is quiet so Egypt may have calmed things down. Israel may not go into Gaza-they didnt say it was imenent.

Been to gaza provided medical treatment to the victims of israeli atrocities and seen firsthand what damn israeli's do to people..helped bury those that weren't lucky enough to survive.. Damn israelis worse than nazi's.. But you wont see that on the news in the west because israel got western leaders by the bollox and controls the media. World would turn on israel in a heartbeat if they were to see the atrocities committed by israel.
