So since I'm a new member, I have to post this here. But I HAVE to post this. I've always had an interest in the paranormal. I believe these events/entities/anomalies are either 1) processes unknown to modern science at this time/processes being suppressed or 2) in our multiverse, with several dimensions beyond those which we normally experience, other processes exist which we are not normally exposed to and which periodically manifest themselves here by 'accident' [interference]. We are also periodically able to 'access' these other dimensions beyond our normal experience by way of astral projection, OBE, NDE, etc, etc, etc, etc.

Recently, we rescued a beautiful little beagle from certain death. She was tagged for euthanasia the day before we had her pulled and brought to us. Her name is Lucy, full name Lucifer, the light-bearer, the morning star. The one who will always walk with you. Not meant to be Satanic, but more like the classical meaning.

So we walk her a lot. We walk her at night. About two hours ago, while walking her around my sorta gated apartment complex, she pulled and pulled towards where some dumpster are, beyond which are thick, tall, dark reed canary grass. She was acting very strangely. I mention her background because she was an abuse case [puppy mill] and NEVER maks a peep. A quiet beagle. Tonight she was going wild, pulling on the leash and really low to the ground, moving fast, FAST. She was shaking and her head was darting in every direction [particularly UP, very unlike her]. I figured she caught the scent of a critter and let her have her fun, since we do not, and will never, participate in the deplorable practice of hunting/beagling. I was looking out into the canary grass hoping to spot some raccoon shenanigans. I saw something running ON TOP OF the canary grass. FAST. I saw it. Dead on, Not out of the corner of my eye. Lucy picked up the scent and took off like a sneaky beagle. She was looking up every few yards, very unlike her. We came to a dumpster in the parking lot, between two buildings. [incidentally, this area is visible from the landing on our 3rd floor apartment window, and literally, without fail, every single time we take her out she stops at this window and looks dead ahead. She also ALWAYS tries to go in that direction each time she's outside, ]

To keep it short, she's sniffing around and it suddenly occurred to me that this area was extremely dark. I was waring headphones [rocking out to vinterland. what a band] She's sticking her nose under the gap between the dumpster and the concrete, cocking her head, listening I took off my headphones and listened with her. What I heard horrified me.

She kept pawing at the dumpster, then looking straight up, then crouching in fear. She was trembling like a broken Tetra whisper air pump [sorry, i'm an aquarium guy, best analogy I can imagine] I heard some shuffling, rustling in the tall grass. I tapped someone loudly on the dumpster and heard from underneath the dumpster, a very unusual sound. It was not an animal vocalization. My wife is an animal behaviorist and I am familiar with most of the indigenous animals here, and she helped me rule out the rest. The vocalization almost sounded like a human voice, very nasal , somewhat higher in pitch without being high pitched. Like a creaking door going 'aaaaaahhhhhhheehhhhhhhhh' and not 'eeeeeeeeeee'. Got it?

I felt overhwhelmed with fear. No idea where it came from. It felt like *doom*. I said aloud "what the # was that!?" and looked into the tall grass. I heard [AND SAW!] clumps of grass rustling and moving in sequence, with a shuffling-feet noise. I became dizzzy. Severely dizzy, and I heard CHATTER, distinct, linguistic CHATTERING and whispering, all around me. coming from every direction. I vocalized

"I'm sorry, who or whatever you are out there. I didn't mean to disturb you. and my dog is just curious. I promise I will leave you alone if you will leave me alone."

My dog was frozen. Wouldn't budge. I tried to give her harness a gentle tug to get her goin, and I couldnt move her. Like she was too heavy. After some time [maybe 15-20 minutes] of just staring in utter astonishment as I heard shuffling, saw the grass wiggle, part, then wiggle some more, Lucy suddenly leaped back, and we started towards my apartment. More rustling. She turned her head and froze. We continued walking. As I was walking away, I DISTINCTLY heard FAST, LIGHT FOOTSTEPS coming toward me on the pavement. I stopped, my heart exploded with hard pounding. Engulfed by a higher 'tier' of the terror I had previously mentioned. We turned and started. I saw small orange lights moving here and there. I heard whispers, creaky chattering. and I saw it. I saw a shadow dart from behind the dumpster into the grass [maybe 3 feet of running]. A small shadow. Followed by very slow 'crunch crunch' of leaves, like someone walking over them, trying to sneak away. Lucy looked on, trembling, curling up, and stiffening, over and over like this. Just watching. When I looked at the gap between the dumpster and the cement, I saw a glare. and I saw a shadow being cast. I felt watched. I saw second shadow to the right, peering out of the grass. More whispering and slow, sneaking footsteps. I also heard a periodic 'mmmeeemp' sound, coming from above and behind me. Not electrical sounding. Not bird-like, but it did seem like it was another vocalization . WE eventually booked accross the street and back into our parking lot. [the two face eachother like this:

[dark parkinglot/grass area ] (street [[My AP]

So, no idea. It was utterly terrifying. I saw the shadows. I heard whispering, low chattering. Strange 'beep' type voices, and the biizarre noice after knocking the dumpster. Whatever they were, they were short. either very small [like 1-3 feet] or just dwarf-ish sized and VERY fast. This was not vague. I could distinctly hear the words, and I could clearly make out the borders of the figures saw. I saw at least 2-3 of them actually running through the grass. It felt like there was more than 4, all watching me. Waiting for me to go away.

What on earth could this be? answers please.

I hear coyotes also like to wear bright orange LEDs at this time of year, kinda like a "hey, coyote chicks, come get some" kind of mentality.

Seriously.

I have no idea who or what you were dealing with, but the story freaked me out on its own. Scary stuff.

Very interesting encounter.
Since it happened near your apartment you should be able to monitor the situation and maybe go back in there with some friends with flashlights and possibly shotguns or other weapons just to be sure.

No offense, but are you making this into a book or something, and looking for ideas?

You have a lot of useless description here for a thread, making the read much longer than it needs to be to try and find out what you are describing. Do we really need to know that Lucy is a puppy mill dog, and all the other stuff?

You were walking her near a dumpster. My guess for your book idea is rats. The orange lights, reflections in their eyes.

See, simple!

Yes, there was a point to the puppy mill remark, if you paid attention. She was horribly abused. And I mean horribly. She's extremely timid, to the point of fainting if she becomes overwhelmed with nervousness. She suddenly became a very, very different last night. First time ever. She always stares at the spot out our window. Once we walked by and she cried and cowered as close to me as she could. Broad daylight. Just that one spot, nobody around.

And no, they aren't rats. I know what a rat sounds like. And rats don't make loud foot-step noises. And rats don't run on top of reed canary grass/Typha and cast hooded shadows.

Am I writing a book? No. I'm just eloquent, and I tend to be linguistically very vivid. It's called being right-brained.

This wasn't coyotes either. It's right next to a forest. the parking lot stops, reed canary grass begins, and it's a steep climb up to the highway. I live in a suburban area. There are no woods nearby. I live off a main road and 1/4 mile away from an interstate highway. But this particular part of the lot is where she got frightened, and she's ALWAYS looking out the window over there, why? What upset her? What made so much noise? My wife, an animal behaviorist, has not been able to Identify the noise I've described. I'll get a picture for you. I am going to go back with flashlights. No weapons. I promised I'd leave it alone. and I was chased away.

One thing you don't seem to understand is that before I understand what was happening, I let her sniff around [leashed] right up to where the lot meets the grassy hill/side-of-highway area. She became so still and so stiff that when I tried to give her a tug, to get her to figure out that we were going, I she didn't move. I physically could not move her. Like she was too heavy. or anchored. And Maybe I didnt make this clear. Other than the chattering, I did hear running footsteps, and I saw a cloaked/hooded figure. very short.

Honestly guys. What I am really interested in is if there is anyone else out there who experienced that same sense of terror, seemingly unprovoked. Or heard footsteps chase you. And without being accused of trying to write a book. It was extremely frightening. I was trembling for hours. I quit smoking two years ago. I'm smoking now. Don't take it lightly, otherwise don't even respond.

Now, I'm an anthropologist by training. The gait of whatever it was had to be very small.

Others mentions coyotes, and rats. For some reason while reading your post, I had the sense that the creatures/beings were crouched and bipedal. I know dogs well, and she didn't get scared until the encounter, surely something she didn't understand. Even when a dog comes onto something new to them, they don't usually get that scared. I'm glad you and Lucy are ok, that did sound terrifying. I would have been wishing to be walking a much bigger dog....

Don't get back to smoking. Bad bad bad!!!
Do have a drink of something strong, then follow with tea to relax, if needed again. Extra cuddles for Lucy will help both of you.

And welcome to ats

I'm going back there in an half an hour. I will figure this out. My wife is coming with me. I agree, the creatures were bipedal, squat, and very, very, very fast. I'd like to emphasize how fast they were.

likewise I'd like to reiterate the severe sense of disorientation that I experienced while over there, but only AFTER I knocked/banged/kicked the dumpster.

This is a little too Schnitzelesque for my liking.

Utter nonsense. It's the way he rolls.

Well, I went back with my wife, but it was a little earlier than originally. Lucy got extremely riled up once we got back there. My wife thought it was a rat she was 'tracking' [along the side of buildings], but after we got back to that spot, her behavior changed. We brought flashlights with us, to see if we could spot anything. She figured it was an animal but after hanging around for a bit, she is iffy. We heard a distinct 'rummaging around' noise inside the dumpster. This is almost certainly an animal. Not a rat, for sure, because the noises were loud. Loud like whole garbage backs were being pushed out of the way. You'd here something moving around for a few seconds, then silence.

Lucy was extremely vocal. Like I said before, she was horrendously abused and NEVER makes noise. She still cowers when we bend down to scratch her head.

She was whimpering, agitated, and wouldn't stay still. She did not want to approach the grassy areas. She was curious about the dumpster, but she stood BEHIND my legs, peeking out. Very strange.

So what we did hear, in the grassy area, was a distinct whispering and chattering. This was not grass rustling, because we could identify and separate those noises. We also heard movements that were very unusual. We did not experience the disorientation and fear as I did when I was alone. My wife saw a hooded-type shadow moving in the tall grass, and agrees it's not imaginary, and may not be animals.

So, I wonder, what might it be?. I'd like to add, that on the other side of my gated community is a very large graveyard. . 6 square miles or so.

Well, you could have looked what was inside the dumpster, at least.

I paid attention. Having had both adopted abused puppy mill dogs and beagles during my life. Beagles are by nature very nervous dogs due to their acute sense of smell, and hearing. It has nothing to do with the fact that this dog was previously abused. Beagles are just this way, which is why then end up being abused quite often. While you want to teach them to sit, their minds are off and running due to something they smell or hear. They have a very poor attention span when it comes to training them.

And no, they aren't rats. I know what a rat sounds like. And rats don't make loud foot-step noises. And rats don't run on top of reed canary grass/Typha and cast hooded shadows.

So now all the sudden these are "hooded" shadow figures? You did not mention them being "hooded' in your opening post.

Am I writing a book? No. I'm just eloquent, and I tend to be linguistically very vivid. It's called being right-brained.

Guess what? People get caught in lies quite often because they embellish and add details that aren't necessary to deflect. It has nothing to do with being right brained. Notice how I said that you did not mention 'hooded' shadow figures in your first post? So now, you have added this detail which does not make you sound credible from your linguistically vivid opening post.

So you live next to a forrest and don't expect there to be a wide variety of creatures living in it? LOL, ok, so instead of a forest creature of some sort, it's a "hooded" shadow figure thingy! By the way, opossums live in forests and are known to make all sorts of weird sounds when they feel like they are being cornered.

Welcome to the wonderful world of beagle ownership! The dog was pointing. You need to go get yourself a book on beagle ownership!

That's pretty freaky dude. That's why I try and carry a gun with me at all times. Obviously in the civilian world, you can't shoot first and ask questions later, but it would probably have at least calmed the nerves a little, lol. Invest in a nice .45 1911 or a Glock, and then go back to the dumpster with a flashlight and investigate further. This time bring a nice HD video camera as well.

The first two have aboriginal accounts of AU little people....the chattering you heard you should compare to the Samuri Chatter vocalizations on the internet....just to rule some things out.
