Bernie Madoff and Wife Ruth Attempted Suicide

abcnews.go.com

The wife of convicted Ponzi schemer Bernie Madoff says that she and Bernie were so upset after the collapse of his multi-billion-dollar fraud that they decided to commit suicide together on Christmas Eve.

"I don't know whose idea it was, but we decided to kill ourselves because it was so horrendous what was happening," Ruth Madoff told Morley Safer of CBS News. "We had terrible phone calls. Hate mail, just beyond anything and I said '...I just can't go on anymore.'"

Ruth Madoff says that she...

Too bad they didn't try this and succeed BEFORE it all went down the toilet.

"I took what we had, he took more," said Ruth. "We took pills and woke up the next day....It was very impulsive and I am glad we woke up."

I'm not.
No offense it just seems like a cowards way of exiting the scene to me.

Very telling as to the state of mind those kind of people foster.... they value their wealth over all things including their very own lives... such a pathetic way to live... I pitty them... and I don't pitty very often...

Yeah what a shame and that is indeed the coward's way out.

There is a sucker born every minute and Maddoff counted on it.

You people really disgust me. Why are you saying you want someone to die? I mean, at it's very core, what an evil thing to say.

Sure, he screwed the taxpayer royally. A taxpayer that never cared to oversee it's elected officials, watched corporations suck the wealth from the poor, stood by while jobs and the great sucking sound transplanted the industry of this country externally in foreign countries. A sucker was born every minute, heck, we're all suckers.

Are we going to be mad at the guy who got caught and was penalized while the rest run free? You can't catch every one of them so you wish a suicide on the one you did catch.

Grab your pitchforks people, just remember the voice of reason you ignored when washing the blood off your hands.

It's not like people here want to KILL/MURDER him.

When you come down off your high horse. Some of us were just wishing him a Bon Voyage. Hey, they were the ones who attempted it. So why don't you get on their case for Euthanasia? Unless you have no problem with that sort of thing.

I question the truth of this. How did she take what they had (implying she took all the pills), yet he took more? And what did they take? Most suicide attempts end up in the hospital. We are to believe they both took a large number of pills and they both woke up perfectly fine in the morning? I wonder if this is an attempt at garnering pity.

I don't want them dead. They should be forced to work for a living at some nasty job like all their investors have had to resort to. Just so they could get a first hand feeling of what their corruption and greed brought to those that trusted them.

That statement is better than mine, i like your way of thinking. Lets put people like them in slave camps where they work all day and have BUBBA be the camp DRILL instructor and DRILL a new HOLE of thought for reprogramming the WHOLE of the matter.

I have only this say to about the Maddofs
in older times in situations like his of irremediable disgrace, people like him would be ordered to fall on their swords
women would usually take poison.

his sons committed suicide

To kill yourself over money? Really? Money!!?? You can live without it, yes it is possible. I get blown away by the stories of men jumping to their deaths in the Great Depression because they felt they lost "everything." I don't understand that mentality but then again I don't understand most people. And yet it still goes on today, and apparently money still rules the world.

Suicide is a scream for help. I can fully understand why they feel overwhelmed - they are reaping what they have sown.

They knew full well what they were doing and the pain and destruction it would vent to trusting people. Money is not my God but I know that for many people it is a God - something they think will save them - protect them - provide for them. Money is a medium that we need while we currently live in an economic based paradigm - nothing more nothing less.

While a successful suicide by the Madoffs would rid the world of two greedy evil people it is not the answer for them. How do you know it is not a story made up by the wife in a bid for pity - psychopaths and narcissists love to shift the focus - in this instance it would be from all the hate and anger they have attracted to - let's say - pity.

They deserve to face the results of their deeds as does every other person on the planet who knowingly cheats and lies. If what they are experiencing is horrible - let's hope they learn their lesson.

Much Peace ...it is evident the entire world needs some...

That is SO profound randomname. Here is a quote from someone that committed suicide and came back to tell about it:

"Then I heard a voice of awesome power, not loud but crashing over me like a booming wave of sound; a voice that encompassed such ferocious anger that with one word it could destroy the universe, and that also encompassed such potent and unwavering love that, like the sun, it could coax life from the earth. I cowered at its force and at its excruciating words:

"Is this what you really want? Don't you know that this is the worst thing you could have done?"

I could feel his anger and frustration, both because I'd thrown in the towel and because I had cut myself off from him and from his guidance.

And I'd felt trapped. I had been able to see no other choice but to die before I could do any more damage in life.

So I answered: "But my life is so hard."

My thoughts were communicated so fast that they weren't even completed before I absorbed his response:

"You think that was hard? It is nothing compared to what awaits you if you take your life."

When the Father spoke, each of his words exploded into a complex of meanings, like fireworks, tiny balls of light that erupted into a billion bits of information, filling me with streams of vivid truth and pure understanding."
