I caught this news segment this morning before leaving for work. They had her on NBC national news last night towing the same exact line. It's
disconcerting that the application of this vaccine is recommended four or five years before the kids hit puberty (maybe longer if a little one's a
late-bloomer!).
And here's why I went off last night, yelling at the tv screen:
They determined that HPV in boys leads to mouth and throat cancer. Anyone employing an experimental method worth a lick KNOWS correlation does not
mean causation. All they know at this point is that boys exposed to HPV have a higher likelihood of developing two cancers - two cancers caused by
SMOKING cigarettes. Oh darn I'm so ticked off about this.
They did not cover the possibility that both HPV and these two cancers are also linked to what we often call "high-risk behaviors". Now these
"high-risk behaviors" in today's terms simply means someone may drink, experiment with some drugs, and participate in consentual sex outside a
monogamous committment. These behaviors are often found together in people. Someone who eschews alcohol will most probably be against drug
experimentation and sleeping with someone they've known for a week. Someone who tried a drug and then wondered why that's illegal may be open to
trying cigarettes and that girl in biology class.
This was an irresponsible representation of the data, skewed for big pharma profit and who knows what the hell else...
Pure, unadulterated fear-mongering. And it works! Today at my office there are nurses on-site to administer flu vaccines. The employees with their
masters' and PhD's are lining up like it's a viewing of the Great Ivy League Pumpkin. Makes me wonder whether good students make good desciples
too...
