Queen opens billion dollar children's hospital

news.smh.com.au

Special meaning was added to her words of almost 50 years ago as the Queen opened Melbourne's new Royal Children's Hospital on Wednesday.

Performing the same duty at the original hospital in 1963, the Queen declared it "a monument to Victorians' humanity".

In a week of OWS protests in Melbourne and around the globe, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II opened a new billion dollar children's hospital in Melbourne, Australia today. Furthering it's claims as the most livable city in the world, the hospital has been in development and planning for over 5 years. Arguably the best children's hospital in the world, Victorian tax payers have been more than happy to foot the bill and its now open and ready to help sick and unwell kids.

Having worked at the old children's hospital this is the best thing to happen to sick children in our region for a long time, and that is the best you could come up with. Today was a celebration for the sick children, even the protesters knew this, hence their absence.

Maybe you need to look at how happy she made the sick children today. She put smiles on there faces.

I am proud to be Australian and apart of the Commonwealth.

i didnt think i really needed to say anything about sick children, its sort of known that people support sick children already.. saying it would have been pretty pointless.
today was a publicity stunt for the queen, if she put smiles on their faces its because they dont understand the truth about her. i highly doubt she payed for any of the hospitial and if she did it would be no more in comparison then an average person donating $10
im proud to be australian but unfortantly australia does not exist. we are a twin of england controlled by the us.
the commonwealth has never done anything for australia and is such a primitive idea

Damned, evil, socialists giving free healthcare to all those ill children.

It certainly sounds like something you should indeed be proud of.

I'd love to visit Melbourne one day, I've heard it's supposed to be a great city.

your posts are inappropriate, today was a great day for the children and the Queen done her bit. Being the head of the Commonwealth. For her to come over and acknowledge the good work of the Victorians and the tax payers was monumental and a big day for all involved. It's upsetting to see people have sour views of todays proceedings. This is for the kids, enough said.

What an immoral comment. This is about sick children not your political attitude to the monarchy. Is your fanatical hatred that bad it blinds you to common decency?

NB I'm not a monarchist but a republican (small r not US capital R - god forbid!).

its not inappropiate. whats inappropriate is using sick children as a media ploy to improve your image.. if that is her bit then she is clearly not needed.
she couldnt give a crap about australians, the only reason she still exists is because she drives up tourism dollars.. and clearly is good at getting media attention for doing nothing more then getting off her behind for 2 seconds.
yes its for the kids, nothing to do with the queen
she is the one that imposes a reiging power over the people that puts people in poverty and sees an increase in diseases that put these kids in the hospital in the first place

Some people will use any opportunity to score cheap, political points instead of helping publicise a facility that Melbourne and the whole of Australia should be proud of.
Obviously they lack any respect and dignity and good old fashioned common courtesy.

Since she has been here, she has visited flood affected regions, the tomb of the unknown soldier, and opened a new hospital. Next she heads to CHOGM which is a gathering of all 54 nations in the Commonwealth to tackle issues like poverty and ways for all 54 member states to avoid a global recession. To say she isn't interested is wrong.

Maybe you should keep these comments to yourself. This thread is about highlighting the modern marvel that is the Royal Children's Hospital of Melbourne. They do amazing things for sick children. The Queen opened it today which means as we speak many ill children are receiving a higher standard of health care.

Sorry, I know this really shouldn't be the time or place but......

Exactly what power does she have?
How does The Queen 'put people in poverty' and 'increase diseases' that puts these children in hospital?

Anyone can make cheap accusations, providing any supportive evidence maybe another matter altogether.

Why you chose this thread to air your views shows more about you than it does anyone else, why not start your own thread stating your views etc on Lizzy and encourage reasoned and respectful debate?

i hate to break it to you but she doesnt choose where she goes, she has a publicity team for doing that.
i can promise you that nothing good will come from the heads of gov. meeting, if they wanted to fix issues like poverty they would have done that ages ago.
she doesnt care at all and doing what she did has not proved that.. anyone could do what she did, even a toddler..

i wont be quiet because people like you need to open your eyes.
once again i have nothing against the hospital

well the governer generals are her representatives and they have a lot of power. she doesnt have much legal power but the monarchy certianly has their hand in the government.
the reason she helps to do that stuff is because she is part of the group that enforces the monetary system currently in place.
i hardly think they are cheap accusations, not to mention the monarchy is responsible for millions of deaths.
i choose this thread because you people need to open your eyes.

Go back to school. The Queen has the final word on what she does. And yes she is the head of the commonwealth and as a commonwealth state the governer general does have certain powers, which is great. If you don't like the country you live in move to China, Pakistan or Iran and see how far you get.

You clearly don't want to celebrate or discuss what an achievement the RCH is for sick kids. so maybe find another thread to trash, we don't need your negative input.

And do you have any actual evidence to support this or is it just some random accusation based on your pre-conceived ideas or rumour and internet gossip?

I live in the UK and I assure you she has no say whatsoever in the running of the country and I suspect that if she ever interfered in it's governance she would be treat with quite swiftly.
She and her family are viewed as nothing more than quaint anachronisms who provide a sense of heritage and culture and provide a good excuse for the occassional knees-up!

the reason she helps to do that stuff is because she is part of the group that enforces the monetary system currently in place.

There maybe an element of truth in that but whether she is sovereign or not is absolutely irrelevant, the corrupt and immoral banking system etc will still exist and there are far more influential and legitimate targets than her.
And maybe, just maybe, she's just an old woman who takes a lot of pride in the commonwealth, the mutual friendship and fellowship it provides and it's achievements - like this state-of-the-art hospital which provides free health care to Australian children -something all you Australians should be proud of.

i hardly think they are cheap accusations,

Unsupported and unsubstantiated accusations about someone unable to defend themselves are indeed cheap.

not to mention the monarchy is responsible for millions of deaths.

Is this monarch directly responsible and do you think things would have been any different if there had been no monarch?
A few examples and details would be appreciated or is this more unsupported pre-conceived opinion?

i choose this thread because you people need to open your eyes.

Of course.

So disappointed. I thought Queen opened the hospital, not the Queen. Of course the bloody Queen did it! Who else would? She's your figurehead leader and beloved Royal. I'm sure she slaved for hours to donate that billion of her own cash for those sick and otherwise unwell kids. Oh, you mean it wasn't her money? So what gives? She's just a ceremonial figure.

Would have been better to have Queen do it. I'm sure the kids would have enjoyed it more too.

Stuffy old queen. Pff.

Those kids are leeching off society, they don't even pay taxes!

Here is some more info on the hospital: www.newrch.vic.gov.au... (it's the projects site, details construction, pictures, videos etc etc etc) Looks like a great addition to the city, I'm not personally a fan at all of "modern" architecture, or I spose I should say "modern" interior design, but that trend seems to be here to stay.

How is the Monarchy of the United Kingdom in anyway responsible for "millions of deaths"? The only people going to war, slaughtering their own people, and wonton aggression are Democracies and Despots, in the last century it was Democracies and Communist.
