One of very few sorry deeds, and given the anti-English feeling of the time that's fair game IMO.

The anti-English feeling at the time was no excuse, it was a stupid thing to do, and didn't do our international standing any good in the eyes of the Allies. We would have been smart to declare war at the very end like almost every other country in the world and join the UN, and hopefully get more Marshall Aid funding. Would even have been feasible to join once the tide turned against Hitler and the American joined, we might have actually boomed in the 50s like the rest of western Europe, instead of stagnating, with the country in poverty and mass emigration

Wishful thinking. You know that'll never happen while the British Forces continue to occupy Ireland. Yeah, de Valera could probably have done a lot more for Ireland than he did and perhaps he wanted to but couldn't, faced with more and a bigger oppression than many of us could imagine.
