Ok. Here we go, one more time.

As you can clearly see, the item on the statue is a pedestal. It has a defined base. It has a defined top platform. It's a pedestal.

A Fasces literally translates to a "bundle". Because it is a bundle of sticks that are tied together. So there would not be a base or top platform on one.

Them's the breaks, kids. It's not a fasces.

Excellent observation and a good point.

What do you make of this statue of George Washington?

A life-sized representation sculpted by France’s Jean-Antoine Houdon between 1785 and 1791 on a commission from Virginia’s legislature, it was raised in the capitol rotunda in 1796, the year Washington published his Farewell Address.

www.history.org...

Sculpture of George Washington by Houdon (in the Virginia Capitol in Richmond)

The statue of Washington in Richmond, VA seems to pre-date the statue of Washington at Federal Hall, NYC in it's creation. Richmond is where the Revolution began and Federal Hall was where the government 1st came into being. All though one could make an argument that the First Continental Congress in Richmond was the birthplace of the government.

Now if you compare the two statues you will see some differences. On the statue at Federal Hall you will notice that the bundle is behind and to the right of Washington. And on the statue at Richmond you will notice the bundle on the left and in the front of Washington.

Additional differences between the two;
A) the wrappings around the bundles are different
B) the height of the bundle is different
C) Hand postions are different
D) Georges hand is about the height of the fasces/column at Federal Hall and yet the fasces column is positioned behind and out of sight
E) the bundle at Richmond has fewer sticks, while the bundle at Federal Hall has more sticks (Note: They could both be columns and the sticks could actually be the lines that we see in a column. Apparently there were many styles of columns throughout history) Ref: www.ehow.com...

Similarities:
A) the top of the bundle is covered on both statues
B) the theme is the same

It could also be said that these are all just different styles that the artist choose to create.

Now that I look at it, it's more like his cloak that is covering the fasces/column instead of his trench coat.

The second sculpture is definately a fasces. However, it was most likely used for it's Roman roots and not it's fascist roots.

In ancient Rome, the fasces was a bundle of elm or birch rods bound together by red bands from which an axe head protruded. It was carried by Roman Lictors as a symbol of authority.

The wooden rods represented physical punishment for certain transgressions. The axe represented death for serious crimes. It seems fitting for a man who fought successfully against tyranny and oppression.

On a related note, the Fascist party did not adopt the Fasces as a symbol until 1919.

fasces

you think by simply pointing out that it's a petastol, is a deturrent from perceiving it as a fasces....
well you are sadly mistaken

It's called artistic expression...why are there bands or straps on said petastol?

i mean cmon, the use of the fasces is no secret in artistic renderings used relating to our founding fathers and many others, or even in the logos for groups and what not...

I dont even know why this is a topic, it is what it is....

yeah, to imply fascism as being equated with george washington is terrible...

according to wiki...
A fascist state's government is led by a supreme leader who exercises a dictatorship over the fascist movement, the government, and other institutions of the state.[6] Discipline and obedience to the leader is demanded by the fascist movement to followers and subjects of a fascist state and is promoted through encouraging comradeship and commitment of followers and subjects.

moving on.....

Excellent point and it's really the reason I called it a fasces to begin with.

Where else do you see columns wrapped with a band or strap?

Fascism didn't even exist as an ideology before the last century.

well no shizzle Sherlock...

Not to come across as arrogant or 'righteous', but there is very little that you need to educate me on.

I do however have a tendency to get ahead of myself or the conversation, so be patient. lol
