At appox 2130 tonight (24OCT2011), my brother informed me to go outside and look at what we both to be "Northern Lights". Has anyone else seen this? I would have taken pics or a video but my camera went down yesterday. I witnessed various colors to include copper, pale yellow, blue, red, purple, dull orange. Anyone else see this???

I'm just south of Dayton in Middletown tonight. Sadly I saw nothing.

I have always wanted to see the Northern Lights.
Have we had a CME that I'm not aware of?

I'll have to go to the SOHO site and check it out.

Well I guess we did!

spaceweather.com

AURORAS IN THE USA: Northern Lights have spilled across the Canadian border into the contiguous USA. Sighting reports have come from as far south as Arkansas, Wisconsin, Michigan, Tennessee, Missouri, Illinois, Nebraska, Kentucky, Indiana, Oklahoma, Kansas, Maryland, New York, Ohio and central California. The display was caused by the CME impact described below.

CME IMPACT: A CME hit Earth's magnetic field on Oct. 24th at approximately 1800 UT (02:00 pm EDT). According to analysts at the Goddard Space Weather Lab, the impact caused a strong compression of Earth's magnetic field, allowing solar wind to penetrate all the way down to geosynchronous orbit for a brief period between 19:06 UT and 19:11 UT. Earth-orbiting spacecraft could have been directly exposed to solar wind plasma during that time.

I live in Ohio. I went outside multiple times last night (look at the stars daily)...and I saw nothing. And I'm in North Eastern Ohio.
