Third, Christianity's whole theme is either "get saved" or suffer eternal death. Even kids are taught that.

No it is not.

That may be typical of the modern, fundamentalist, evangelical; but it is not a theme of Christianity. It does not match Catholicism, or Anglicanism, or Orthodoxy, or even the more "mainline" Protestant teachings.

I admit, in the US, modern, fundamentalist and evangelical is virtually all one hears, but they are a minority-- just a very loud and often angry one. They buy television time and television networks; but they are hardly the voice of Christianity and have almost no part in academic nor ecumenical theology-- because they deny all other historical models of Christianity.

Fundamentalist Christians and Fundamentalist Muslims are much more alike than either would be willing to admit-- both are about law, and the use of that law to justify self while condemning all others as "Enemy."

Just as most of Islam knows the difference, so does most of Christianity.

I have to admit, my eyes see a great enemy here. Not just to our kids but to country, mankind, the world and to God himself.

The world I see our kids in, breaks me to the core.

Yes, but then, if you think that, just maybe, a lot of these idealistic-but-anti-authority posts we read are coming from eighth graders, it may not be so bad as it appears! Eighth-graders are still eight-graders!

I was idealistic at that age, and because I so often had bad adult leadership (my father was great-- but that was about it) I was rebellious. Then again, I was fascinated by my parish priests, who alone were talking about things I knew about but no one else spoke of. Moreover, I realized over time that they knew that I knew.

That enemy has been the same since the beginning. But as always, good men (like my Dad and a couple of priests) and probably an unseen host of battered Angels watched over and protected just enough to allow me to survive this world.

Not to you, Randy, but for others: Those that don't understand the purpose of religion-- maybe they are not supposed to. Not everyone has a part in the struggle with the real enemy-- but as I do feed the homeless, and visit those in prison, the sick, the dying, and even occasionally pull people from danger-- it would be nice if the ignorant would get out the way (or at least stop sniping at me).

See? I still have idealism!

Yep-- exactly what you were counting on-- slap around the Christians and then, when one punches back, you cry "Foul!" because you WANT Christians to sit and take your garbage. You think we are supposed to be pacifists? You think wrong.

You want understanding? I gave it to you-- you were expressing your hate. I understood.

You want forgiveness? Not until you you stop slapping Christians around.

The Christian faith has not led to millions of deaths. Just one. In the Name of Christ, many people do what they want for their own purposes. That breaks a commandment-- and it happens. How about this-- more people have killed Christians for their faith than Christians have killed non-believers for not believing.

So take your accusing finger, and stick it in the nearest mirror, and cry "Abuser!"

Then trot back under your bridge.

That is a bunch of bull#, and you know it. Ever hear of the Jews "God's Chosen People?" more of them have died than the so-called Christians, they are the true ones being persecuted. Christians are errogant enough to think it is them that they are being persecuted? How many Jews did Hiltler kill? How Christian crusades went out and killed innocent Gnostics, Pagans, and people who didn't believe in their Faith? Don't tell me Christians didn't hurt anyone..and now they are brainwashing people into believing if you don't have God in your heart you are going Hell. If that is not fear mongering then I have no idea what it it's being called. Christian fellowship? You guys are the wolves in sheep clothing, and you need to get off your high horse and open your damned eyes, and take a look around. You are being played by your own religion. You want believe me because you are brainwashed! There is no Savior coming back to save you, you have to save yourself! Wake Up!

Yeah same here, i was brainwashed for years when my eyes really opened I saw what the so-called Christians really are, they are the Satanist, they worship a guy named Jesus, he was just a man, and how many idols of him are running around? They are hypocrites in the finest, letting their pride, envy, jealousy and lust get the better of them. They are the lovers of the Earth. They just don't realize it, because the people behind the Christian movement knew exactly what they were doing, they took the important books out of the bible to blind people, to keep them from doing what they were supposed to do. It's a very sad religion, and none of them see it! My eyes weren't open to all the crap until two years ago. Yes, I dare you to challenge them, the minute you do, you will see who they really are.

No bull. More Jews have died for their faith than Christians, but that does not counter my point-- which remains true. So, are you stupid by nature, or do you have to work at it?

Christians are errogant enough to think it is them that they are being persecuted?

"errogant?" A joke, right?

"arrogant. from arrogate-- to presume without right." I presume nothing-- I have it by right, and never said Christian, alone, were persecuted. No one said that-- except you!

The idiot before you said, regarding his not being a Christian, that at least his beliefs had not caused the death of millions. I pointed out that the only death required by the faith of the Church was that of Christ.

Really, how stupid are you? Did you really not understand that, or are you just pretending not to have a clue because it suits your ridiculous view of the world?

How many Jews did Hiltler kill? How Christian crusades went out and killed innocent Gnostics, Pagans, and people who didn't believe in their Faith?

Count them for me, and then count how many of those killed Christian. There is nothing in the Christian faith that teaches to kill non-believers. Nothing.

Crusades-- who started it? The Muslims started the killings-- the Jews, the Christians and the animists.

Gnostics-- who started it? The Gnostics started the killings and the political rulers (not the Church) slaughtered the Gnostics.

Pagans-- who started it? The Pagans started killing the Christians and the Jews.

Go read a history book-- not a web site with propaganda.

Don't tell me Christians didn't hurt anyone..

I never did-- and no one ever has. Here, take this match from me and burn your own straw man-- I'll help you burn it. That is your argument you WANT Christians to take-- but none does, and none has. So you create a false argument so you can be right... for a change?

Same hyperbole as the other post. A-ha! Now I see-- same person with two accounts so you can "star" yourself, huh?

and now they are brainwashing people into believing if you don't have God in your heart you are going Hell.

"brainwash?" More hyperbole. I know what brainwashing is-- kind of 1950's pseudo-psychology. I don't think it means what you think it means (and why am I not surprised?).

Who is they? That teaching is not a Christian teaching.

If that is not fear mongering then I have no idea what it it's being called. Christian fellowship?

"fear-mongering" Moi? Can you find an instances where I, a Christian, have fear-mongered?

You guys are the wolves in sheep clothing, and you need to get off your high horse and open your damned eyes, and take a look around. You are being played by your own religion.

hate-speech.

I see the wolves in sheep's clothing within the Church. Far too much of it. They hate me, because I am one of the sheepdogs who attacks them. I also am merciless to liars and hate-mongers, which, like you, are wolves in wolves clothing. Also, I do not suffer fools gladly. Two strikes against you.

You want believe me because you are brainwashed! There is no Savior coming back to save you, you have to save yourself! Wake Up!

I'm sorry, was I supposed to be listening to your brainwashing rant?

I imagine you could be right about this. As far as my reply to Heretic goes. Not the case.

Rebellion, is common in the kids of our society. I went through it myself, but I can't abide by it, as being the way things are supposed to be. Or as the norm. Rebellion is bad enough, without them become deviants in immoral
thinking. Liars and self centered, disobdient, spoiled, demonic lil screamers. Do to a lack of parental guidence and participation in thier lives. I truely believe that if you spare the rod you spoil the child. Children actually crave
corporal punishment in their subconscious minds to some extent.
My mother used switch and I haven't one hang up from it. In fact I look back and say," My God ! How did she not kill me ? "
I deserved more than what I got by far.

That enemy has been the same since the beginning. But as always, good men (like my Dad and a couple of priests) and probably an unseen host of battered Angels watched over and protected just enough to allow me to survive this world.

That is the task. To survive. But to what end ? That is the question that increases the task.

Not to you, Randy, but for others: Those that don't understand the purpose of religion-- maybe they are not supposed to. I absolutely believe there are those who aren't supposed to, as you say. In fact it's rare to hear someone else
come up with that reasoning. If there weren't " those " Gods word wouldn't hold water at all.

I want so badly to do some of those things you are doing. That's the coolest thing in life, I haven't done to the extent you have.

See? I still have idealism!

Where do you get this stuff?

Despite the "History Channel" (falsely so-called) fairy tale of "hidden books of the Bible" the canon of Christian Scripture is well documented-- and no books have been removed since the first canon. The Protestants removed some which were in use but never canonized.

to keep them from doing what they were supposed to do. It's a very sad religion, and none of them see it! My eyes weren't open to all the crap until two years ago. Yes, I dare you to challenge them, the minute you do, you will see who they really are.

Yeah, and while I don't the believe the stuff you were taught (e.g., non-Christians are going to Hell)-- I'm every bit as mean as non-Christians, like you. And you hate that Christians are as mean as you are-- you want them to be your victims.

"Thou shalt not be mean and thou shalt not be dangerous" is not in our doctrine-- and that really chaps your hide. And that it chaps your hide, makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

More and more people are atheist nowdays. How did this happened?
Religion is the oldest thing on Earth!Religion was a reason for many wars. That's how strong their beliefs were!Every advance civilization in our history had religion(Rome,Greek,Summer,Egypt...).
That's why i can't believe how easily we walked away from religion. Many people walked away from our God!

If our ancestors had a chance to see this "modern" world, they'd be very disappointment.

According to Toynbee, it happens because people don't see a future for themselves in the society, so they turn their backs to the society's values.

It is not really complicated. If you have nothing to gain by playing by the rules, and something to gain by not playing by them, you will not play by the rules.

Easy answer: Science debunked many religious claims (not just Christian ones) and people are slowly realizing that if some things are so easily debunked, the rest is at least "suspect" as well.

I ran out of cheeks a long time ago, so I get to hit back. And when I do, the antagonists scream like little girls-- and I can hear your shrill scream from here.

So, you are complaining that your version of what a Christian is supposed to be like, does not match me?

Gee. How is that working out for you?

It does bring up an interesting point which is discussed within the Church.

"Political isolationism" when applied to the activities of the Church is sometimes referred to as having a "Fortress Mentality." For a large part of the Church in North America-- and to some extent, in all western societies; there is sense within the Church of being "under siege." So the walls were erected.

Some of us found ourselves trapped inside the walls, and demanding the gates be opened so we can go out into the world and do what we are to do. We go out as enemies in the eyes of that world.

We did not go out to offer ourselves as hostages, or whipping boys. We went out to be in your face-- to make your insults sting your own cheeks. We go out to defend those who cannot, or will not, defend themselves; and do battle with the wicked-- using the tactics the wicked use against them.

Just as you didn't care if I liked being insulted for my faith; I didn't ask if you liked my responding in kind. I don't care what happens to you-- I care what happens to your victims. I'm not any more interested in saving your soul than you are.

So quit your whining.

Wrong how exactly? 6,000 year old earth, complete and utter nonsense. Global flood less than 10k years ago, also demonstrably wrong. People surviving in whales, hogwash. Comets a sign of god, more nonsense. And don't get me started on gods with elephant heads and other nonsense, or a god who's powerful enough to create everything but then cares about small stuff like what believers wear. Hell, even some core principles are demonstrably wrong, like the exodus of the Jews demonstrably didn't happen as depicted in the bible.

So tell me please, how exactly am I wrong

Fact is, not only is science debunking a lot of things, that knowledge is also more easily available thanks to TVs and the Internet. Whereas before you had to spend $50 on some science book, you can now get most of that info for free on the net, or by switching on the TV.

Also, maybe, just maybe, people realize that filling gaps of knowledge with magic (aka god) is not clever given the abismal track record of "god did it"

Wrong about being the reason why atheism is increasing. Atheism is nothing new. Atheism was being discussing by Greek philosophers as a problem at least three centuries before Christ. Atheism is an expected phenomena. It is nothing new. It has nothing to do with knowledge or technology or science. It is just something that happens when societies start declining and approach their end.

Well, not new (especially since everyone's born an atheist before being indoctrinated), but definitely on the rise. According to Gallup, religions are losing ground while the amount of atheists is growing strongly.

And your "societies declining" thing is complete and utter nonsense given that China experienced record growth while being largely full of atheists. Hell, take Scandinavia for example: High % of atheists, and they're doing better than many more religious countries like the US.

But whatever, who cares about facts, right?
