According to a New York Civil Liberties Union study, the NYPD is on pace to stop and frisk over 700,000 people in 2011, or more than 1,900 people each day. More than 85% of those stopped and frisked are Black or Latino, and more than 90% of them were doing nothing wrong when the police stopped them.

Is OWS becoming the voice of the people?

A new uncompromising movement against NYPD's notorious Stop & Frisk program began yesterday as hundreds of demonstrators marched from the Harlem State Office Building to Harlem’s 28th precinct. At the station, Cornel West, author and Princeton professor, Carl Dix of the Revolutionary Communist Party, Rev. Stephen Phelps, interim senior minister of Riverside Church, and dozens of others were arrested in an act of non-violent civil disobedience. Among those arrested and protesting was a large contingent from downtown's Occupy Wall Street.

Protestors that are speaking out against illegal searches are arrested illegally by police? Anyone else see the irony here?

People really don't get it. OWS is here for everyone. They're trying to better the quality of life for even the NYPD, which has done their own protests several times about things they felt were unfair. OWS is just a little harder to deal with than the "give them a carrot on a stick" crowd.

You're on a roll today

This is what we all need to be doing. Illegal searches are just unacceptable, unconstitutional and down right wrong
The article you quoted is exactly correct about it mainly happening to minorities.

People of all walks of life throughout the US are sick of this crap as it always seems to lead to something else...handcuffs and a beatdown when you resist.

terry stops are 100% legal...

Terry v. Ohio, 392 U.S. 1 (1968), was a decision by the United States Supreme Court which held that the Fourth Amendment prohibition on unreasonable searches and seizures is not violated when a police officer stops a suspect on the street and frisks him without probable cause to arrest, if the police officer has a reasonable suspicion that the person has committed, is committing, or is about to commit a crime and has a reasonable belief that the person "may be armed and presently dangerous." (392 U.S. 1, at 30.)

notice ...reasonable suspicion, not reasonable cause...different things entirely

Except it's really just legal profiling, and it's wrong.

Ok...The NYPD is starting to get ridiculous.

This means that when they do legitimately enforce the law people are going to call into question the manner in which they did it each and every time.

Stop and frisk is patently illegal. They know it, the mayor knows it, and any objective observer knows it.

Good for the OWS I admire what they are doing. Of course Wall Street, its buddies and its flunkies will do their best to get the focus off those ordinary people who are brave enought to face up to our financial oppressors and fraudulent wheeler dealers. The news channels get more banal by the day.

The trouble at the heart of today's problems is the dishonesty and collusion of government. This problem stretches virtually around the world, but we are slowly catching up and trying to get the focus on the corrupt ones.

Or are they merely becoming and evolving into a sort of 'Rent-A-Protest' group?

I ask this not as an admin of this site nor as a member of the same, BUT ... as an individual.

Having watched and reviewed several of the Occupy Harlem 'broadcasts' from earlier in the day ... each and every left me coming away with the same feeling and/or sentiment...

Occupy ______ == can seemingly be either idealistically or monetarily bought and paid for.

I understand people are pissed, frustrated and have been finally driven to protest as their only perceived means of voicing their concerns.

I understand the reasoning behind such ... as well as the desire and purpose for doing so.

What I don't understand ...

... Is the seemingly disjointed manner by which they are attempting to accomplish the same.

'Marches and protests' with as myriad a 'cause'(s) as there are people in attendance.
Individual protestations as diverse and akin to the same ... too numerous to mention.
... et al

I thought the core purpose, point and focus was that of putting an end to corporate influence and/or control over US politics and the like.
(?) ... gotta start somewhere

The Corporate Political Complex ....

Wall Street Playing By Their Book - as opposed to playing by The Book, so to speak.

Revolving Door Politics and Corporate Positions And /Or Appointments

but ... NO ...

Rent-A-Protest seems the rage

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Someday people will come together for a Common Cause ... one that is Not their Individual Cause ...
.. then, perhaps
What I want to know is how you prepare to spot possible criminals, and then assign a number to the amount of possible criminals you're going to search? The statement made by the NYPD is quite laughable and should be cause for alarm in the public's eyes.
Is this a quota or a study of possible statistics?
It sounds like word about another protest got out, and OWS protestors that agreed with it showed up to show their support. Typical of human nature really, no renting or payments were said to be made.
How was anyone 'illegally arrested'?
Since when has the NYPD had to prove anything when making an arrest at a protest? Who knows? They're not going to tell us the truth.
What i don't get is if that were true "if they were there from them to" why in the hell would they make their job that much harder to accomplish?
Doesn't matter the thread its always the evil cops and the poor little OWS the victims that is a two way street seems to me they would both get on the same page.
Cops are doing their jobs even tho many people will not see it they are there to protect the public safety so that they can protest their their little hearts are content.
Something were to happen some dude going on a shooting rampage or whatever they would be screaming for someone to come save them.
The police get no respect because too many people are unwilling to give it to them and believe it or not RESPECT a COP they will RESEPCT YOU.
Of course no one will believe that just read the majority of posts by ATS readers and contributors who are the police.
loved the rent-a-protest comment in here
While I understand that many OWS protesters probably went their with conflict with the police in mind(and many sought it out) there are some instances where the police have gone overboard. And some of the NYPD policies are simply constitutionally offensive.
Have you ever dealt with the police? It doesn't matter what you do, they'll do whatever they want. Some are good, and some aren't. This whole give respect get respect crap doesn't exist. Most simply don't care. If a cop is going to disrespect you, how you treat him/her is moot. If you approach a good cop, and you disrespect them, they'll do their job still in a respectful way. A person doesn't change who they are based on how you act towards them. Not anyone with integrity anyways.
Lot's of things mostly bad happen in high stress environments not excusing any behavior here from my perspective too many people do not know when to stop and think about what they are doing and that goes to both Police and Protestor alike.
It detracts from the focus.
especially when you have those running the core of the live OWS broadcasts seemingly pandering to other outside interests, causes, etc.
Without a common voice, cause and/or solidarity on the whole, City to City, they're but a mere murmur amidst the disgruntled masses on the whole.
NYC being a fine example of the same.
a mere flash in the pan. something seen and discounted daily. finally getting media attentions, BUT ... not in the manner desired nor intended.
a failed effort from the start ... no matter how well-intentioned, initially ... IMO
