OWS: Good Initiative – Poor Judgment?

This is not a slam on OWS!! This is my take on why OWS is not going to take root!!

Despite what some on ATS think, the OWS movement is losing steam. People in New York and other cities are quickly losing patience with the protesters because of the way they are conducting themselves and it won’t be long before they demand the OWS protesters be removed.

The truth is there are many things OWS stands for that the majority of American can definitely relate with once they understand the issues. Most of the things being protested are right on. Corporatism is killing our country. The problem lies not only in the delivery of the message but in the alternatives and demands proposed by the protesters. OWS has been high-jacked by socialists. If OWS doesn’t break from the radicals they will lose the struggle very soon.

There is a big difference between capitalism and crony capitalism/corporatism. Also, corporatism is no worse than communism or the socialism most OWS protesters subscribe to. This is the reason people like me cannot and will not get behind the movement. Most Americans will never subscribe to socialism or socialist policies. OWS is doing the country a huge favor by standing up against the problems we face as a nation. However, IMHO they will ultimately lose the battle because the alternative they espouse (socialism) is just as unacceptable to Americans. The sooner they realize this and throw the socialists and communists from their ranks the sooner OWS will gain momentum with the majority.

I think those that are the subject of these protests believe that if they can just ride it out, all this will go away, and they can go back to doing what they have been doing.

If they can just hold out until winter comes, the cold will take care of the protesters for them. They may be right, or they may have misjudged the level of passion that their actions have finally aroused in the populace.

I personally hope for the latter.

The things they are protesting are not going to disappear, so whats to stop more people from protesting again in the near future. We could just have protest month every spring, while nothing ever changes.

I agree that many are waiting it out. My point was that if OWS will drop the socialism and appeal to a broader range of Americans their numbers will be so great the movement may actually succeed.

Well, that's the thing. I don't care a rip for socialism myself, I know I bust ass to make a living and pay my bills. I am aware of the fact that I am a slave. And I don't believe for a second that everyone involved in the protests is an advocate of socialism.

I see the movement as more of an acknowledgment of the fact that people have finally begun to see that our current system is inherently flawed. You can't possibly say that everyone protesting holds the same ideas; the number of people involved makes it impossible for everyone to be on the same page, except for one point: the system is screwed, and people are fed up with it.

Look at the Socialists and Marxists behind the movement! Where is the big money and support coming from? Look at the pictures from every protest and you’ll see many people flying flags with the face of the Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara. They openly refer to each other as “comrade.” Almost every piece of literature passed out at the rallies advocates socialism as a cure-all for the inequalities of the American economic system. This is why the majority of Americans will not get behind OWS. If they’d drop that BS they’d have a lot of support because the things they are fighting against (as listed in the article I linked) are things everyone is outraged about. Their solution is the big detractor. Wealth redistribution? Higher taxes on the wealthy? More government regulation? Really? That’s un-American!

I think people are sick of what is happening with corporatism in the USA and around the world. It's mainly young people who are seeing their futures go up in flames and OWS is a response. I think it just lacks the articulation and direction needed, which explains the confused messages. It's like being mad at something, but not really having the power to change it.

The media hasn't helped, I'm sure it's turned off a lot of people who would be interested, but fear it has been taken over by the left and so want no part of it, even though their voices are just what the movement needs. Why would the corporate media push such agenda's?

It's not the next revolution, but hopefully some people will have learnt something in the process and it's better that kids are out showing concern for their nation rather than sitting inside watching Tv and playing video games.
