It's good to prepare oneself for that kind of disaster. But what i think is, since you wouldn't know what kind of "disaster" might happen, things that fit in a backpack would be handy. I mean what if the disaster force you to move out of your place immediately?(anything can happen)

So, we should really have an emergency stuffs that fit in our backpack in time of getting the hell out of that place.

I love how we get all the smug people who have the resources and space to store 3 months worth of food.

I hope these people are prepared to kill others to safeguard all their hard work. People with nothing will stop at nothing

Actually, we are, but that is not the plan, we have kept our group at about half what we have prepped for just so that we can allow others in if they have any skill that we can use, and I don't just mean combat or survival skills. What we are looking for now is more along the lines of entertainment, recordkeeping, child care and such; the soft skills.

The only ones that we would have an issue with are the ones that would immediately attack without understanding that we are trying to keep some semblance of civilized society alive.

We don't plan on turning anyone away that finds us, but we will defend what we have if needed.

If you truly have zero dollars left after paying for essentials and there's absolutely no way on earth for you to better your financial situation...I'd say pray. And that's coming from an atheist.

Not judging you - believe me, I went through a (long) time in my life "living hand to mouth" and recently had to move my 60 year old father to my house because he lost literally everything - money, house & job of 25 years. On top of that we took him to the doctors because his stomach & legs were swelling up like balloons...he has stage four liver cirrhosis and hep C (with 26 years of sobriety under his belt, go figure - when it rains it pours.) Everyday he hits the pavement, 200 miles from where he's lived his entire life, looking for a job even though he most likely will never get one because he has no skills beyond driving a forklift, he older and sick.

Guess what I'm saying is - don't give up, keep trying to find new ways to survive and improve your situation.

Heating is my primary concern when it comes to SHTF scenarios. Being in Michigan, it's already getting very cold here and the winters can be pretty harsh. I can protect myself, I have enough food and water to feel pretty comfortable but heating is another story.

Thankfully, I have family in the area and many of them have wood stoves so we would probably need to hunker down with them.

I have been thinking about this for sometime. But I do have questions hopefully someone in my situation can help.
If it was just me, I know what I need and live and not live with. But I have a wife and small children.

I have water I usually keep about 30 gallons of distilled water in the house most of the time. I do live with in walking distance to a 500K acre lake so water and fishing would be a plus thing. About 5 miles up the the road from us is national forest.

I get the can goods. Spam, beans refriede and normal, Cornbeef hash which I love, I have found it has a tremendous shelf life. Plus you have protein and carbs. The one thing I do look for in my can goods is items that do not require water to cook. DO not want to waste water to make the food if possible.

I have about 25lbs of rice.

Now I do have problems in this area

Clothes: My son 11 and daughter 16months will eventually out grow what they have now. Not knowing how long it could get bad or be bad. Should I bigger than what they need now?

Planting food and external water sources. These are all great but what if we have fallout either radioactive/biological and our crops or soil have been contaminated.

Feminine products for my wife and maybe my daughter depending when everything goes down.

For a family my size I am not sure if I could even begin to get a 3 month supply of items. I am barely making it now. I do have some BOB ready one with camping gear the other with basic medical supplies, water purification tabs, potassium iodide.

Another thought I know I am all over the place. I make sure to keep a change of shoes in my trunk for my wife and children. They like to wear sandals and with the threat of EMP we may have to hike it back home. Then that brings it down to another question stay or go.

Not to criticize, but Tampons are the last thing you need to be thinking about! They can go back to the old days of "the rag" if the need to...and Tampons are a convenience you cant afford when TSHTF. Especially your daughter...if she has never used a tampon before, she wont miss them

Yes, by all means, buy clothing that is larger than what they wear now. I would probably go 2-3 years out, and would again, not be looking for fashion -- look for sensible clothing at third hand stores and yard sales. You can buy tons of used clothing for pennies on the dollar.

Focus on clothing to keep you warm in the winter, and protection from the sun in the summer, if appropriate in your area. You can always resort to loin cloths if necessary in the summer, so winter is the critical thinking period here.

Water: 1-2 gallons PER PERSON PER DAY is the rule of thumb I have employed. Your 30 gallons of Desani water you have now is not nearly enough to sustain life for you and your family. Dont depend on the lake in the event of a chemical attack and believe it or not, SABOTAGE. You would be surprised what people will do to gain control of power. Especially your neighbors.

And last but not least: KEEP YOUR PLANS TO YOURSELF. By telling everyone in your neighborhood, you are making yourself a target. When it comes to family members, keep it on the low down, and only tell those you trust.

While this may sound cold, don't make provisions for those over 70. Sustaining their lives may not be what you want to do in this case. While you love them, your survival and those younger than you, needs to be your focus. I would think that Grandma will understand...I know mine would.

If you have cats, keep them. Dog? Yes. Again, as cold as it may sound, you may need them at some point to eat.

Just my two cents....

I would agree on the tampon issue, there is no real need for them a cloth would do just fine... your buy a #load of them or pads before the shtf

I run a website that sells outdoor camping and sporting goods. Over the last month I have noticed a steady increase in business...it seems like people are stocking up on a lot of gun accessories and magazines, bullets, knives, etc.

Naturally, one would think it's because of the hunting season but I have noticed that the vast majority of the gun accessories are for pistols.

People are stocking up...I can see it every day. I hope they are also stocking up on the other supplies as well rather than just guns and ammo.

Also, for my own supply, I have been watching heirloom seeds and I was surprised to see a few heirloom seed kits sell out very quickly on Amazon last week. I did get one for myself, if you have land...I highly recommend getting some. Even if nothing happens, you will be better off with the knowledge and skills to grow your own food.

Pressure canning is another good skill, get one before canning season next year and stock up on jars and lids.

Is all that food you are buying going to be good "years" from now???

I know some things can last a long time....but "years"??? Seems like you are just wasting money if you are trying to plan for "years" in advance.

Well, those who understand emergency preparedness (and are working at being prepared - for ANY eventuality, such as SHTF or weather problems, unemployment, earthquakes, etc.) know that you buy food storage that you can ROTATE. Even if it will last for years, you should be rotating the freeze-dried/dehydrated stuff every now and then. One, you need to learn to COOK WITH and EAT it. For example, introducing a diet of wheat-based proteins to people who have been living with a processed-food diet in an emergency can produce almost emergency results! Two, you rotate and add, so your supply continues to maintain it's "years-long value."

There is nothing wrong in being prepared...but you seem to think it's foolish and a waste of time and money. Just do us "preparers" a favor, and don't look us up when you're cold and hungry, 'kay?

Also get the tools neccessary to cultivate the land, such as ho's, shovels, rakes and more.

We're on it! I've been stocking up on seeds too. I even have a horse pulled plow and horse, believe it or not!

I've got a hoe, but fail to see any use for a ho......most of them wouldn't be willing to come stay in my basement, unless I supply a lot of alcohol and dance music.......

I am SO glad that I live a few oceans and thousands of kilometers away from this sickened society where weapons can so easily be bought online....

If the pole shift suddenly occurs, which countries in the world are considered safe? Europe, Asia, Oceania? Does anyone know the predictions about countries safety in case of major tsunamis etc. ?

There's an old survival axiom worth remembering and acting upon:

The more you know the less you need to carry.

Turning your basement bunker into a mini Walmart might not always be the best idea, especially if your area becomes overrun or if it descends into anarchy.

Aestheteka, I was feeling the same. In fact, I was actually thinking of WHERE to go in the world, around Dec 18-24 that would be relatively safe.

This is not off topic, discussing the actual locations that are safe if a quick pole shift (few minutes-hours) would occur. Does anyone has this knowledge or do we have to guess?
