The next arms race?

Gamma Ray Weapons

Is an effort being made to creat a new form of weapon of mass destruction by the U.S. Dept of Defence? Is this hypocritical considering the war on terrorism and the explusion of power from 'Sadam Insane'? Or is it a case of "we are the good guys, we can be trusted..."?

I am not anti-american.. just a little confused about what is ok for one country and what is not for another.

Yes it's just America being hypocritical again. If George Bush can have WMD, well...

Anyway, who's to say who the good guys are?

It seems the US are determined to research and develop new tactical nuclear weapons and even use them. After all, why develop tactical weapons if you don't intend to deploy them? It's completely different from MAD and all that.

Well if they successfully develop them and go on to use them, just watch what happens very carefully...

Its not that really the USA does not use weapons that kill off masses of people unless more lives will be lost though normal fighting.


As for why develope these weapons? because if we did not then some one else would and we would be at a disadantage. Thats the only reason we work on building new crazy weapons.

I just hope they get some kind of orbital ion cannon up and running place a few in orbet and blast them from space heheh.

Then why is the US determined to develop new tactical nuclear weapons to use as warheads on bunker busters? Those aren't be for preventing other people using weapons since they are tactical.

The US already has strategic nukes which prevent others from using 'crazy' weapons. The US seriously wants to use nukes for tactical things like destroying underground bunkers in warfare.

This arguement is not about who should or should not have WMDs...

Saddam invaded his neighbor Kuwait.
The UN declared war.
Saddam lost the war.
One of the conditions for the end of the war, was an agreement to get rid of WMDs. It was his agreement, not the US dictating who should, and should not have WMDs.

It's really as simple as that. Now you could argue that he was goaded into attacking Kuwait, and even justified to some extent, but it's really a moot point here. Likewise, you can argue that the US made more about it than was necessary, but again, it's a moot point. The bottom line is, Saddam agreed to certain terms in order to retain leadership, he failed to live up to those terms, repeatedly, for years. It has NOTHING to do with who should, and should not have WMDs....

But anyway if you can make Gamma bombs its only a matter of time before other countries find out how to make them. If the US does not make them someone eles will. Its the same with space based weapons it only a matter of time before someone makes them.

Yeah, I agree with that. Better the US develops these new powerful weapons first rather than some 'rogue state' with a dictator.

At least the US leaders are held accountable for their actions and can be thrown out of government by the people or be put under pressure by other countries.

The weapons that are being developed are becoming more scary and more 'sci-fi'. Let's hope someday humans can decide to stop developing weapons to kill other humans and all live in peace.

But until that day these weapons should be developed by the West to deter others from using their weapons first.
