A suggestion to US Voters

We need to fix the whole problem in 2012. It is my belief that the presidency is only 1/3 of the problem. The other 2/3s sit in the congress and the senate. I would suggest that we as US Citizens full exercise our voting rights and clean them out. Regardless if you think they are doing a good job or not, they have to go. Also upon election of your new congressman and senator you send this:

Dear Elected official:
I am one of your constituents that helped get you elected; in short I am one of your employers. I task you with the following list of “to dos”:
1. You will write or support immediate legislation for term limits in the congress and the senate. I think no more than 8 years total service is good.
2. You will write or support immediate legislation for a balanced budget amendment in such that the budget cannot exceed GDP and in fact should be 10% less than the GDP.
3. You will write or support immediate legislation that will eliminate all special perks such as your own health care plan, not participating in social security, and of course when you are out of office you are off the payroll.
4. You will write or support immediate legislation to eliminate foreign aid in all forms, we need our money here.
5. You will write or support immediate legislation to withdraw US troops from combat zones – honestly we need to be done, we are not the world’s police force.
6. You will write or support immediate legislation to repeal Obama-care.
7. You will write or support immediate legislation to eliminate the patriot act, and support second amendment rights.
8. You will write or support immediate legislation to eliminate wasteful bureaucracies.
9. You will work your term to re-empower state governments and reduce the size of the federal government.
10. You will write or support immediate legislation that guarantees full transparency of government financials and spending and this will be required as an annual report to the country in the state of the union, just like every public company has to disclose in its annual report.

My dear ATSers I think this is a good list to start with and fill free to add your own demands or to disagree with mine. I welcome your comments and critiques.

Great list with some great suggestions! I would encourage Americans to pursue something like this.

Unlike a lot of post on here, you have come up with some tangible and workable ideas that can make things better. My hat goes off to you! If you put enough pressure on the government and get some strong spokesmen, you can make a difference.

It is a good idea in theory...But the problem lies in the fact that the politicians stopped caring about the American people or what they want, long ago. They don't care. Which is why they ( Both the left and the right) just do what ever the hell they feel like.

Write as many letters as you want demanding this and that, they will continue to ignore us. We have to get their attention another way.

Continuing the same road will not help. Granted, I don't know what the right way to go is, but I just know that doing the same thing over and over, expecting a different result each time is insane.

So, let's figure out the sane route and try that.

And side note. Flags bump the thread. Not stars. So ask for flags if you are going to ask for something

Alright, off I go to do my daily chores. Will try to be back later.

I have thought of that, this is the diplomatic approach. Other approaches are:

1. Every US Citizen refuse to pay taxes, which is hard I know becuase they extract everything from your pay.
2. Full out peaceful revolt, everyone decide to converge on DC and carry them out on a pole, let 350 Million pissed off US Citizens show up at the door.
3. Bloody revolt - let's not go there.
4. Everyone just stop paying any bills whatsoever, sort of Boycot the US for a year and see what happens.

It is a tough situation we have allowed and for now I say we give diplomacy a chance before we get crazy.

Thanks for the reply

I agree that the Prez is only part of the problem. We must vote people into congress that will represent our constitutional rights and not their personal beliefs.

1. We do have term limits. That's why we have to vote every 2 years or so for representatives. If they fail at their job, limit their term by voting. That way we can let effective representatives remain in office.

2. How could you hold them accountable to such a promise?

3. I agree

4. I agree

5. I agree

6. I agree. Obamacare/Heritage Foundation healthcare is a scam. We need universal or single-payer healthcare to eliminate the corrupt insurance, corporate interests, and the AMA control over our lives.

7. I agree.

8. That leaves a lot to interpretation. What are you referring to?

9. If we want them to empower the states, they should do nothing at all.

10. I agree. Would that include the Fed's books and military/black ops spending?

And I respond...

1. You will write or support immediate legislation for term limits in the congress and the senate. I think no more than 8 years total service is good.

True to your counter but the reality is that US Voters are lazy, and most do not pay attention to if they are doing a good job or a bad job, term limits forces in new blood, if this was the case then the president technically doesn't need a term limit either right?

2. You will write or support immediate legislation for a balanced budget amendment in such that the budget cannot exceed GDP and in fact should be 10% less than the GDP.

GDP is a standard econonmic metric and accounts for multiple variables. The only other way to do this is do a flat income tax and like you do to a kid, this is your allowance - use it wisely.

8. You will write or support immediate legislation to eliminate wasteful bureaucracies. TSA, EPA, FCC, DEA, ATF, FBI, CIA, take your pick, there are sooooo many. Sort them out and like a business do what makes since.

9. You will work your term to re-empower state governments and reduce the size of the federal government.

Fed is always needed but put it back to original premise, keep interstate trade open, and defend national borders.

10. You will write or support immediate legislation that guarantees full transparency of government financials and spending and this will be required as an annual report to the country in the state of the union, just like every public company has to disclose in its annual report.

Absolutely, but black ops always has alternative funding sources anyways

I didn't mean that towards you OP. Or your ideas. I think there great and I've thought of a few of those myself from time to time. I just can't believe people keep going back to something that is broken. The only thing voting does is let them know most of us still don't get it.

S+F! Your post is positive and as said in a previous post tangible. My father worked on something similiar last year and he and I and several others sent it out to our elected officials. Not sure if it worked. We got a couple of form letters back. I am typing your list up and adding a few things of my own as well and making copies and sending them out tomorrow and next month and so on until these elected children start doing for us instead of 'others' !

Since the US people are lazy, where will we find all this New Blood? While I can understand your point, I think we may need to find a way to keep the good statesmen in office through a special kind of vote possibly, and retain the representatives that do the job of the people.

8. You will write or support immediate legislation to eliminate wasteful bureaucracies. TSA, EPA, FCC, DEA, ATF, FBI, CIA, take your pick, there are sooooo many. Sort them out and like a business do what makes since.

I agree to a point, but there must be some regulation in areas where corporate money can have a profound effect on the people and their surrounding area.

EPA, while it is cumbersome at this time, serves a good purpose to ensure that big business and agriculture does not pollute our waterways and air. As someone who enjoys fishing, drinking clean water and breathing clean air, I think a scaled-down EPA is vital.

Absolutely, but black ops always has alternative funding sources anyways
You are correct. That damn opium trade in the Middle East has treated us well.

Here's the major problem. Politics is a career path, not a hobby. The most pointless term I see in complains about politics is "career politician". Of course they are! Why would anyone pursue a political CAREER and then support or write legislation that limits said career choice? Why spend years working your way up from city manager to mayor to governor to Congressman, if the payoff was going to be eight years max?

I agree with the idea of term limits, but whether you clean out the halls in 2012 or not, nobody is drafting that legislation other than the President, and it will be shot down once drafted.

Most people get inot politics with the ambition to one day become a member of Congress...and stay there as long as possible.

Well that is just the rub isn't it. The Fed has gotten so large that it has become a career, which was not the original intent of its charter. Most of these guys are rich already and have other careers before they run. We need to go back to our roots and simplify the process again.

Most likely, not worried about the statistics as much as the prevailing wind around our republic and the fear of what may come. When Greece falls, what happens to the other economies, governments, and the second great depression that is headed our way. Our government has failed, and we have failed as citizens. We must pick up the pieces and do what we can do now to fix it.
